During the research and editing process of our music video, it was important we knew what kind of
audience we were going to target. Upon research, we found that people who favoured the alternative
genre tended to be teens/young adults (17-22) who had laid back, sociable personalities. The research
showed that there was no huge difference between female and male consumers. This was both a
positive and negative aspect; positive in that it would be reaching a wider audience but negative in that
it would be difficult to create a video which would appeal to both males and females.
We previewed a rough cut of our video to a small group of year 12 media students. The feedback was
positive, many praising the ambition to try something different whilst using a genre which isn’t exactly
mainstream. Previewing the video to media students was a great way to get the perspective of someone
who is also creating their own media product so they understand the process and can give educated
opinions. We also showed the video to people outside of school which helped us get an outside
perspective on what worked well with our video and what we could improve.
Anique Bowen
Age: 19
Occupation: Student
Location: Wembley
Favourite Artist: Kanye West
Favourite Genre: None/All
Anique is a fashion student who runs a culture magazine called “The Edit”. She is a creative and ambitious and
is someone who’s opinion I respect when it comes to creativity. She is also someone who falls under the
demographic we were aiming for. After we showed her a rough cut she was positive about the decision to try
something new, calling it an “ambitious attempt to create a video that matched the sonics of unorthodox
track”. Her only concern was the pace of the editing and she suggested if some of the cuts were quicker it
would make the video even better. We took this advice and tried to apply it to our final version in hope of
creating the best possible video.
Jerome Martins
Age: 20
Occupation: Student / Model
Location: London
Favourite Artist: Kid Cudi
Favourite Genre: Hip-Hop/Rock
Jerome is a student who also models for streetwear brands. He is a keen fan of both music and films which is
why I decided to show him our video because of his eye for cinematography. He said he was a fan of a lot of the
camerawork and said he really liked the running over the hill shot in particular. He also stated he thought the
mise en scene added to the theme of the video. It was good to get the opinion of someone who is a big fan of
film and understands the process of filming and editing.
