ORIGIN STORIES
Purpose
This activity has two purposes: First, you’ll start to become familiar with a very deliberate reading process that you’ll use throughout the Big History course. This will
not only help you understand the readings for this course, but the skills you learn will also transfer to other classes. Second, you will become familiar with the idea
of an origin story. Cultures around the world have their own origin stories, ways in which they believe and describe how the Universe came to be. It’s important that
you understand that all origin stories should be respected, as they often relate to people’s cultures and beliefs. Big History is another one of these origin stories.
Specifically, it is what many consider a modern, scientific origin story.
Part I
Before you dive into the articles, look at the Three Close Reads Worksheet and review the directions. Think about the difference between approaching readings for
capturing gist, reading for factual information, and analyzing for conceptual thinking. Then read the following articles:
• Origin Stories Introduction
• Modern Scientific Origin Story
Complete the Three Close Reads Worksheet as you do.
Preview—Capturing Gist
Fill out the Capturing Gist section of the Three Close Reads Worksheet as you do your first close read.
Key Ideas—Factual
By the end of the second close read of “Origin Stories Introduction,” you should be able to answer the following questions:
1. How does Stokes Brown define origin stories?
2. How does Stokes Brown define oral tradition, and why is it important to the study of origin stories?
Conceptual Thinking
Think about other origin stories that you know about (maybe from your own culture). How do these compare to the modern, scientific origin story that is Big
History?
Part II
Fill in the sections on the Origin Stories Comparison Worksheet using the information from the “Modern Scientific” article. You should also practice the Big History
reading process using the Three Close Reads Worksheet as you read the article.

THREE CLOSE READS
Remember that in Big History you will do what we call “close reads” of every article you encounter in the course. It won’t be long before you get the hang of how to
do each close read, but while you are still getting used to them, here’s a quick guide.
Directions: Before you read, look at what you should “Pay Attention to...” Then consider the “Questions to ask” in relation to what you should pay attention to
while you read. In the “summarizing” column, answer the questions. Below the table synthesize all of that information into a sentence or two.
Reading 1: Capturing Gist
This reading is more of a skim—it should help you get the general idea of the reading.
Pay attention to ... Questions to ask Summarizing
Title What is this article going to be about?
Headings Now that you know a little more about the article,
what do you think it’s about?
Resource quality Is this a legitimate source? A primary document?
A research report? What does this tell you about
the article?

Reading 2: Informational
This is probably the type of read that’s most familiar to you. You will be reading for information that will help you understand the article and pull out important
information from it.
Pay attention to ... Questions to ask Summarizing
Vocabulary Are there words you don’t understand? If so, look
them up!
Annotation What is each paragraph about? Write this on your
reading, and do an overall summary in this table.
Retell and rank What are the key points from the article? What is
most important and least important?

Reading 3: Thinking Bigger
The third reading is really about understanding why this reading matters, and how it relates to Big History.
Pay attention to ... Questions to ask Summarizing
Comprehension What have you learned from this article? What
more do you need to know?
Analysis How did you reach your conclusions? Did this
process make sense?
Synthesis How does this article relate to your overall
understanding of Big History? How does it relate
to you or the world around you?
Evaluation What did you think about this article? Is it
interesting? Is it helpful? Is it important to
understanding what you are currently studying in
Big history.

Lesson 1.2 Activity: Intro to Origin Stories

  • 1. STUDENT MATERIALS ORIGIN STORIES Purpose This activity has two purposes: First, you’ll start to become familiar with a very deliberate reading process that you’ll use throughout the Big History course. This will not only help you understand the readings for this course, but the skills you learn will also transfer to other classes. Second, you will become familiar with the idea of an origin story. Cultures around the world have their own origin stories, ways in which they believe and describe how the Universe came to be. It’s important that you understand that all origin stories should be respected, as they often relate to people’s cultures and beliefs. Big History is another one of these origin stories. Specifically, it is what many consider a modern, scientific origin story. Part I Before you dive into the articles, look at the Three Close Reads Worksheet and review the directions. Think about the difference between approaching readings for capturing gist, reading for factual information, and analyzing for conceptual thinking. Then read the following articles: • Origin Stories Introduction • Modern Scientific Origin Story Complete the Three Close Reads Worksheet as you do. Preview—Capturing Gist Fill out the Capturing Gist section of the Three Close Reads Worksheet as you do your first close read. Key Ideas—Factual By the end of the second close read of “Origin Stories Introduction,” you should be able to answer the following questions: 1. How does Stokes Brown define origin stories? 2. How does Stokes Brown define oral tradition, and why is it important to the study of origin stories? Conceptual Thinking Think about other origin stories that you know about (maybe from your own culture). How do these compare to the modern, scientific origin story that is Big History? Part II Fill in the sections on the Origin Stories Comparison Worksheet using the information from the “Modern Scientific” article. You should also practice the Big History reading process using the Three Close Reads Worksheet as you read the article. BIG HISTORY PROJECT / LESSON 1.2 ACTIVITY
  • 2. Name: Date: STUDENT MATERIALS THREE CLOSE READS Remember that in Big History you will do what we call “close reads” of every article you encounter in the course. It won’t be long before you get the hang of how to do each close read, but while you are still getting used to them, here’s a quick guide. Directions: Before you read, look at what you should “Pay Attention to...” Then consider the “Questions to ask” in relation to what you should pay attention to while you read. In the “summarizing” column, answer the questions. Below the table synthesize all of that information into a sentence or two. Reading 1: Capturing Gist This reading is more of a skim—it should help you get the general idea of the reading. Pay attention to ... Questions to ask Summarizing Title What is this article going to be about? Headings Now that you know a little more about the article, what do you think it’s about? Resource quality Is this a legitimate source? A primary document? A research report? What does this tell you about the article? Close Read 1 Synthesis: BIG HISTORY PROJECT
  • 3. Name: Date: STUDENT MATERIALS THREE CLOSE READS BIG HISTORY PROJECT Reading 2: Informational This is probably the type of read that’s most familiar to you. You will be reading for information that will help you understand the article and pull out important information from it. Pay attention to ... Questions to ask Summarizing Vocabulary Are there words you don’t understand? If so, look them up! Annotation What is each paragraph about? Write this on your reading, and do an overall summary in this table. Retell and rank What are the key points from the article? What is most important and least important? Close Read 2 Synthesis:
  • 4. Name: Date: STUDENT MATERIALS THREE CLOSE READS BIG HISTORY PROJECT Reading 3: Thinking Bigger The third reading is really about understanding why this reading matters, and how it relates to Big History. Pay attention to ... Questions to ask Summarizing Comprehension What have you learned from this article? What more do you need to know? Analysis How did you reach your conclusions? Did this process make sense? Synthesis How does this article relate to your overall understanding of Big History? How does it relate to you or the world around you? Evaluation What did you think about this article? Is it interesting? Is it helpful? Is it important to understanding what you are currently studying in Big history. Close Read 3 Synthesis:

Modern Scientific Chinese Judeo-Christian Iroquois Mayan Greek Zulu Efik Source of the world Big Bang Chaos within a huge egg God forms Heaven, Earth, light and dark First people lived beyond the sky. Chief’s daughter falls through a hole in the sky. Makers in the sky and the sea Chaos within a void The darkness World is created by Abassi, from nothing Originator of the world Pan gu God Great turtle in an endless sheet of water Plumed serpent Gaia, Eros, Erebus Umvelinqangi Abassi, god of the Universe How the Earth formed Left over matter dispersed during the formation of our sun Pan gu died God made water, sky, ground, vegetation, creatures Old lady toad spits out a mouthful of dirt on the back of the turtle Like a cloud unfolding Gaia births Uranus Umvelinqangi created it out of the darkness. He created life from a tiny seed that he sent to Earth. Abassi created it, as well as the stars and all life. Age of the Earth 13.8 Billion years ago First life forms One-celled organisms Fleas, lice of Pan gu All living creatures Swans, muskrat, beaver, toad, turtle Deer, pumas, jaguars rattlesnakes Titans The seed Umvelinqangi sent to Earth was the first life. From the reed that grew from that seed came more reeds, out of which more life forms grew. Origin story doesn’t go into detail. It’s possible that all wildlife was created at once. How humans formed Evolution, adaptation over about 100,000 years Fleas and lice on his body became human ancestors Created in Gods image Dirt grows to form the world island supporting the daughter Third attempt, derived from corn Prometheus / Athena made man. Zeus made first woman. Unkulunkulu grew out of one reed and picked the humans from the reeds that they grew from. Abassi created the first man and woman. They defied Abassi and married and had children. Relationship between humans and animals / plants Dominate and jeopardize the planet’s stability Yin yang, find balance Rule over nature Respectful of the nature which supports humanity Hunt, gather praise the gods All subservient to the gods All life stems from one common ancestor. All are subservient to Abassi. The Earth has many secrets for humans to learn. BIG HISTORY PROJECT / LESSON 1.2
