Swot Analysis
1. SWOT Analysis
Strengths:
I think there are many strengths to my short film and its script. I only have one main
character and only two other main characters so the audience won’t be overwhelmed by too
many characters in a short amount of time. I think the feelings that the main character Oisin
goes through are ones an audience of similar people could relate with so they find it
interesting when the main character does something unorthodox with it. I think the use of an
interesting location, rather than a student’s house, is something that contributes to the film
and perhaps helps to make it feel more realistic and grounded. Also I think the use of music
in the film and songs to create a tone will be effective
Weaknesses:
A lot of the script is with no dialogue and focusing on the aesthetic to tell the story which
could become difficult due to location or weather conditions. Although my actors are not
professional actors they do it as a hobby and take part in various theatrical events so they
may require some direction in areas where I am not too sure, which could inhibit the
performance. On the production side, my location is a bit difficult to acquire as I need a small
shop but probably an independent one as I would need to talk to the owner. I will also need
to factor in hours that I can film which is why I’ve set in the night but I do think it will produce
a better tone along with the fluorescence from the LED lighting and shop windows. More
detail in the costuming and look of the actors could be better.
Opportunities:
I am using Oisin who has previously acted in a similar ‘anti-social’ – like role and I think
leaving room for inspiration will prove effective for producing that slightly surreal tone and
sporadic physicality to the character that I want. Also having more than just myself to film the
short will help as I can focus more specifically on the lighting whilst also focusing on my
composition.
Threats:
If I have no suitable location the film won’t work and will have to be completely
rewritten.
Filming at night could provide difficult to light and still get a realistic look to the
footage
Physical acting could become difficult for unexperienced actors.
2. Client Feedback:
11/12/2019 – The client said how there were formatting errors so I corrected these, things
like directions and spelling errors. The client liked the story aspects of the script.
3/01/2020 – They client informed me to finalise the ending and choose between the two
endings.
16/01/2020 – I finalised the ending and submitted the film to short of the week, the client
replied stating they “really like the use of music and the twist at the end of the short”.
Evaluation:
In my first meeting the client outlined things I needed to change, this included mostly
formatting errors like making sure directions were wrote in properly etc. The client also
highlighted spelling errors that would need to be obviously changed. The client liked the
script in its story aspects. After these were changed I sent it off as the final submission where
the client said they “really like the use of music and the twist at the end of the short”. This
means I was ready to make the shooting script and start the storyboards and start visualising
the story. I also had two possibilities for an ending where I was going to shoot both and then
decide in the post-production which one I wanted to use. I feel that I met the needs and
expectations of the client, the brief and the chosen audience based on the tone of the movie
that I’m going for. I produced a fully formatted standard script and shooting script. It meets
all the legal and ethical that I previously considered. Overall I am pleased with what I have
produced, perhaps if I had the time again I would secure my location first before then writing
my script. I have learnt actually how much time it takes to fully write a film and the ideas.
