1.
2. Using the Vegas Pro editing software I have
completed my first rough cut of the film through
aligning all of my shots in order without removing
any of the content filmed. In this version of the
film nothing has been edited and the storyline is
followed as according to the storyboard and script.
In the next stage of editing I had to cut some shots
due to the length constraints in order to have it follow
conventions of short film. One of the cut shots may be
used in the later stages of editing as it is still relevant
to the storyline, which has been restructured to an
extent due to slight continuity issues and to more
display to effectively convey the films meaning and
themes while following the codes and conventions of
the mockumentary genre more clearly.
3. During the editing I have cut out a video track
segment in order to save on length and increase the
overall quality of the film through only selecting the
best shots. In order to create continuity after the cut I
have used sound to overlap with the next shot,
creating stability and allowing the film to progress
smoothly. This method is often used in filmmaking
in order to increase storytelling capabilities while still
following the intended codes and conventions of the
genre.
Throughout the film I have attempted to follow the
codes and conventions of the mockumentary genre,
which is seen through the purposeful reveal of the
cameraman through the reflection in order to make the
audience aware of his presence and his role in the
developing story of Bob’s rites of passage. This also
closely mimics the fly on the wall documentary style
and live action filmmaking through its ability to subtly
beak the fourth wall in order to not let audiences only
consume the film as entertainment but also as a
commentary on our modern consumerist society.
4. During the editing process I had to reorder some
of the shots and sequence composition in order to
increase the on-screen dynamic due to the faster
pace,. This would had helped create and
emphasize the tension and conflict between Bob
and Casey within the film, as for example the fact
that Casey gives the warning before Bob’s
realization o his bleak reality had added strong
characterization, as it shows how far bob’s will to
sell was and it also displays the theme of
exploitation of the average consumer.
Throughout the editing process I had to be
aware of the film length and therefore make
some important cuts, such as the cut of Mr.
Smiths dialogue to 4.49 seconds. This had also
aided in creating tension and more efficient
character interactions which had all helped
reveal their motivations and chemistry.
5. In the final stage of editing I had attempted to fix
the lighting and sound issues in order to make the
film smooth, however I was careful to not overdo it
in order to follow the codes and conventions of the
mockumentary genre such as on the location live
filming which can contain many lighting and sound
variations. Overall there are a few sound spikes
and sudden lighting changes but they are all the
result of allowing the filming process to follow the
story of Bob with minimal editing interferences.
I had then completed my shot to shot transition
process, in order to make the scenes and acts
blend together well and have a meaningful and
coherent story be told. I had often relied on the
fade transition during this editing in order to
reflect Bob hazy and dreamlike state of mind.
6. Lastly I had added all of the non-diegetic
elements of my film to complete the editing
process and properly introduce the audience to
the title of the film and the company that had
created it, as well as revealing the cast and crew
in the final credits scene in which I had added an
additional scene to give a stronger conclusion to
the film. There are also non-diegetic texts which
help introduce the characters to the audience
from the start, as the filming should not be cut
often due to the mockumentary style of filming.
Lastly the non-diegetic score is upbeat which
reflects on the tone of the film as it is still a
comedy.
