Question 7
1. Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task,
what do you feel you have learnt in the progression
from it to the full product?
Primary Differences between Preliminary task and my film
opening: As I had never worked with filming cameras or tripods before,
my preliminary task was essentially for me to learn about how to film on
the cameras, how to use the tripods but mostly, to lean about the three
difference shot types: match on action, shot reverse shot and over the
shoulder shot. I was successfulin this, however, as the procedure was new
to me, I did not do any pre-production research, specific genre
conventions or storyline as was needed for my film opening.
Research
The research I did for my prelim was very minimal compared to the
research that I carried out for ‘Voices’. For my prelim, I researched the
different shot types and brainstormed about the conversation topic that
should be in my film. The main focus, of course, was the camerawork
which was simple but it successfullycompleted
the given task.
For my film opening, however, I researched areas
such as target audience, props in science-fiction,
conventions of science fiction and technical
terminology and shot types. I have learnt that pre-
production is essentialto a final media product.
2. Costumes
For my preliminary task, I did not consider choosing costumes for my
actors. They were dressed in the clothing that they were wearing to school
that day as I did not feel as if the film was an in depth characterstudyas
my film opening was. However, for my film opening ‘Voices’ I carefully
chose the protagonist’s costume in order to denote certain messages to
the audience. As I used the same actress in both my prelim and my film
opening, the costume planning is clearly contrastive:
Prelim: Film opening:
V.S
Makeup
I felt that it was important to add makeup to my character’s appearance to
portray that she has been in a dangerous/violent situation, suggested by
the blood on her forehead and the bruisesaround her
eyes. I did this to support the storyline and create
emphasis on her desperation. I did not consider this
for my prelim as the storyline was not that in depth.
3. Storyline
As my prelim was solely to demonstrate my acquired camera skills, I did
not feel it necessary to consider a strong storyline for the film. However,
as the film opening’s purpose is to intrigue the audience into the
happenings of the rest of the film, it was necessaryto create a detailed
script and storyboard for my film opening ‘Voices’:
Sound
The only sound in my prelim is the dialogue of the actors which was
needed to fill the conversation that was being filmed. For my film
opening, however, non-diegetic sound was used to create the tense and
disorientated atmosphere that was needed. I learnt how to edit sound on
Premier and Adobe Audition and used this to build tension in my film.
4. Time management
My prelim tasktook me one lesson to film and around 3 lessons to edit.
Therefore when I got to filming and editing my film I realised that I
needed to make sure I was obedient to time management tools such as my
filming and editing schedule:
Knowledge of technology
Looking back at my preliminary task, I have learnt a lot about
technologies such as editing software, different means of presentation and
filming in order to create my full product. All of these skills are important
in creating a full media product and I have learnt these skills in the
process of my media product.
