Script anaylsis
1. Style:
This script is for a film called The Truman Show, it
follows the main character Truman as he discovers
the outside world that is separated from his town
of Seahaven.
Content:
This is one of the first scenes with Truman as we
see him exit the house. He greets the neighbours
and we see his pleasant attitude and charm as he
uses his line ‘and in case I don’t see you, good
afternoon, good evening and goodnight’. This very
ordinary scene is interrupted by the falling of the
set light from the sky as it smashes into the road
startling Truman. You notice everyone has
disappeared and Truman alone goes and
investigates the light.
Narrative Theory:
Vladimir Propp (1928)
- Truman is the hero
- Everyone else within the Truman show set could
be seen as a false hero as they all acting their
lives whereas Truman thinks it is reality.
According to narrative theory, the cause-effect
chain of events has a beginning, a middle and end.
This scene can be seen as the beginning of the
conflict that makes up the story as the first
suspensions are created in Truman from the light
falling from the ‘sky’ labelled as a star.
Genre:
This film has elements of Drama and Fantasy. At
heart is the story of Truman’s life and the drama
that is created by him figuring out his whole life is
staged. The fantasy element is that obviously
something like this does not happen and the
theme of a huge dome that holds the town of
Seahaven where every natural element is
controlled and made by people.
At the beginning of the film (this extract) a very
idyllic and perfect life scenario is presented which
sets up the surreal tone of the conflict as Truman
becomes paranoid everyone is in on it.
Target Audience:
The movie is rated a PG because it is appropriate
for most audiences but I feel its intended for an
older audience like 16+ because of the themes and
storyline of the movie. The movie tackles a quite
dystopian and unethical topic and I think becomes
more relevant as the movie becomes older from its
release in 1998 as more attitudes about tolerance
and political correctness are changing and being
discussed in the media. I think this film could be
aimed at anywhere on the NRS scale as it tackles
quite morals-heavy topics but also can be watched
as a fun Jim Carrey movie. You could say that it
appeals to the Mainstream but also the Explorer
on the 4cs scale.
2. Style:
This is a TV show broadcasted on NBC. It is a script
from the first episode of Frasier, a comedy that
follows Frasier Crane, a radio psychiatrist and his
brother Niles Crane in Seattle. It is linked as a spin-
off from the TV show Cheers where Frasier became
divorced, spawning the show Frasier. Its wrote as a
comedy sitcom so the dialogue is obviously very
important to get right
Content:
Fraiser aired for 11 seasons from September 1993
to May 2004. This script extract depicts Frasier
nearing the end of his physiatrist radio show as he
takes one last caller called Russell. The location is
described as a typical radio studio with the two
room glass partition between the sound desk and
the radio room. The scene heading also describes
the lighting as low. The caller appears to be calling
about feeling depressed and Frasier is presented to
know what to do in this situation pretty quickly as
he told by Roz that he needs to wrap it up as they
are running out of air time.
Narrative:
This scene introduces the character of Frasier in his
job role which tells us the audience quite a bit
about him already setting him up for the conflict
that may occur. There is not a clear conflict in this
scene but over the episodes you see the
presentation of Todorous’ theory of equilibrium
and disequilibrium.
Genre:
The genre of the TV show Frasier is a sitcom,
mainly intended to be comedy but as many great
sitcoms, it has a heartfelt story entwined
throughout that helps to build the audiences
relationship with the characters. It is made for an
older audience as the kind of humour used may
not be understood by a younger audience.
Target Audience:
I think the target audience would be at C1 or B on
the NRS scale as some of the humour may be quite
sophisticated. Also the characters may be at a
similar class so it helps the audience to relate and
empathise more perhaps.
On the 4cs model I believe the target audience
would be the Mainstream as they would probably
live in the domestic, routine lifestyle which the
mainstream do.
3. Style:
The media is a video game called Titanfall 2 and
the company is Respawn Entertainment. The script
follows the general style of game scripts where it
describes the cut scene or visual and then the
character has his dialogue whether it’s a
monologue or narration etc.
Content: Titanfall 2 is a game that premiered in
2016. It is the sequel of the acclaimed Titanfall also
by Respawn entertainment. It is a first person
shooter set in an apocalyptic foreign world in
space. The soldiers called ‘pilots’ use huge
armoured mechs in combat called ‘Titans’. The
main campaign character, Jack Cooper is being
trained by ‘pilot’ Captain Lastimosa in the ways of
combat. Early in the game we see Captain
Lastimosa die and Jack must fill his shoes with and
pilot the captain’s Titan.
Narrative:
Titanfall 2 has a typical 3 act structure within the
campaign of the game. This fits with the theory of
equilibrium and disequilibrium, Todorous (1969).
The game embodies a core narrative battle
between good and evil.
Genre:
This game, as stated in the description paragraph,
is a sci-fi game. It also has elements of fantasy and
drama. Many sci-fi conventions include space
travel, futuristic weapons and vehicles. Titanfall 2
has all of these plus more in depth futuristic
concepts like the ‘Titans’ themselves.
It is set in a outer space other world that reflects
an alternative version of a earth-like community. It
also appears that this is a futuristic setting
therefore long ahead in time, this presents themes
of dystopia.
Fundamentally the game embodies a core sci-fi
convention of the battle between good and evil.
Target Audience:
The main target audience is obviously people who
play games that like sci-fi themed first person
shooters. They may range from C1-E because
whilst it could mainly include young people, older
people and adults may enjoy it. I think this video
game may appeal to the Struggler on the 4cs as
people may use it for escapism to ‘live in the today
and not worry about tomorrow’. They also may be
disorganised.
4. Style:
The media is radio and the institution is the
BBC. This radio comedy is called ‘Where this
Service will…’. This specific episode is Where
this Service will Separate’. It is written in the
style of a Radio 4 romantic comedy. It follows
the typical structure where there is a
paragraph of description with short descriptive
sentences at the beginning and seeing as it’s a
radio comedy, the description will probably be
spoken as a narration.
Content:
Its about a couple who, in the first episode,
met on a train and how the journey occurred.
This scene is set in a crematorium and starts
half way through the service with two
characters Gareth and David whispering
Narrative:
Romantic comedies often follow a traditional
structure where the characters are
experiencing some unfulfilled desires, there is
a situation where they meet; the comedy
often arises from the clashing personalites.
Genre:
The genre is a romantic comedy that focuses on
the domestic relationships between the
characters but interestingly with humour.
Target Audience:
Romantic comedy’s often appeal to younger and
older people, however considering its format is
on BBC Radio 4 this usually accumulates an older
audience. However the genre could attract other
people to the radio station.
