Fishing Industry IN PAKISTAN
1
Ms Asma AkbarAli
Fishing is no longer only an occupation for the people
living near lakes, rivers and sea but it has grown into
an industry where fish breeding /fish farming is
practiced . The culture of breeding fish is known as
Aquaculture
Fishing industry contributes 0.9% to the GDP
It earns 6% of the total foreign exchange earnings

Ms Asma AkbarAli
 Pakistan coastline is divided into Sindh & Makran coast.
 Sindh coast is 30% of the coast and the rest 70% is the
Makran coast

1.Karachi is the main commercial center in Sindh Coast
2.Gwadar is the main commercial center in Makran coast

Subsistence
Uses non-scientific / unsafe traditional
practices like small wooden sail boats
that can only travel 5 Kms into the sea .
Unpredicted fish catch due to the
limited distance
Nets are made up small sized holes
which trap the baby fishes
Rope those are Non-washable
Unhygienic storage and conditions at
the harbor

Commercial
Fishing is the main occupation in the coastal settlements of Sindh and
Baluchistan. The fisheries are developed for the purpose of selling .
68% of the total marine catch is derived from the Sindh coast
Commercial fishermen use both the traditional boats and new
modernized boats but more use mechanized/motor boats that can travel
50 to 60 Kms into the sea. Gill netters that have holes of the size of
particular fish they want to catch are used so therefore other fishes and
baby fishes are not trapped in the net.
Washable ropes
The Makran commercial fishing centers are Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara,
Jiwani, Sonmiani . The Sindh commercial center it is Karachi
Ms Asma AkbarAli 7
 Inland fishing is practiced in or near lakes and rivers.
 Fish ponds/farms are developed in Punjab Sindh &
KPK
 The fish Farms are made of rectangular human-made
ponds for breeding fish . They have a concrete base to
prevent water loss through leakages or seepage . The
sides are solidified with mud
 Trees are planted around these farms to provide
oxygen, minimize evaporation, and keep water body cool.
This facilitates growth and fertilization of fish
8
Ms Asma AkbarAli
 Inland fishing has nearly doubled in size since 2000 and there
is a continued growing interest of business people. There is an
ongoing demand for fish from the local consumers due to the
change of diet patterns , health awareness and benefits

1. Fishing departments are being trained and advised /policy
reforms on Licensing, maintenance and quality assurance
2. Value-added products are being encouraged e.g. canned or
frozen fish ,omega3
3. Weather forecast and communication through broadcasting is
being established to warn for any dangers related to the climate
e.g. storms, tides, floods etc
4. Marine Fisheries department ( MFD) is concentrated towards,
research and quality assurance through modern technology
5. MFD is building ties and good relationship with World trade
Organization ( WTO) for promotion of trade

6.EffortsarebeingmadebytheGovernmentprojectsto develop the harbors.
Infrastructurefacilities like roads and structures of Korangi, Karachi,
and Gwadar fish harbors are being undertaken. Facilities for storage,
refrigerators , ice factories are being provided and specific areas are being
allocated for sorting, processing and packing of fishes.

Ms Asma AkbarAli 16
The tradition way of processing fish for preserving is done
manually by cleaning, cutting , salting and drying. Fishes that
are not yet processed are kept separately , Government has
installed 16 ice factories at the Makran coast for freezing and
preserving the fishes
6 at Gwadar
1 at SurBander
2 in Jiwani
4 in Pasni
3 in Ormara

 Enjoys both domestic
and International
demand
 Marine fish catch is
sold locally through
street hawkers and
local suppliers to
restaurants and hotels
 Frozen, cooked and
processed fish is
supplied to the
departmental stores
and sold in open
restaurants
Ms Asma AkbarAli 20
Ms Asma AkbarAli 21
1. Fish waste is sold to the fertilizers
industries for processing
2. Fish waste is sold as feed to the
poultry farms
3. Nutritious low cholesterol food is
sold to food lovers
4. Healthy diet for patients suffering
from cardiac conditions, high
blood pressure and obesity
5. Fish oil is sold as supplements of
Vitamin A & D
 30% of total fish catch is exported international
market
 Japan is the main market along with China which is
the largest buyers of Pakistan's fish and fish products
 Other buyers include Hong Kong, Indonesia, Egypt,
Middle East, USA, UK, France , Thailand, South
Korea, Bangladesh
 80% of total dried fish is exported to the Middle East
Ms Asma AkbarAli 22
1. Greater earning to fishermen
2. Increase in employment – Throughout the
continuum
3. Up gradation of skills and technology
- higher output – Increased trade
1. Increase in foreign exchange
2. Reduces burden on crops and livestock provides
variety in food

1. Water Pollution : toxic materials like metal like
aluminum and nickel is ingested by fish and further eaten
by people
2. Thousands of fishes get blind due to high level of toxicity
in the water
3. Over fishing : fishing of shrimps and other fishes during
the breeding period causes loss of baby fish ( May to
July) . Concentrated fishing of specific fishes example just
the rahu, or shark etc
4. Loss of Mangroves
5. Limited prioritization and budget for developing the
fishing industry
Ms Asma AkbarAli 25
To meet the quality standards for trade in relation to
infrastructure like storage , transport and clearing and
packing areas hygiene of fish sector
Ms Asma AkbarAli 26
Sustainable fisheries can lead to
1. Provision of healthy food choices because it contains
low cholesterol and vitamin D
2. Increase in foreign exchange through export to trade
partners
3. Modern skills and technology can impact higher
quantity and quality output
4. Raise in the Earning sector through opportunities
throughout the continuum
5. Infrastructure development like roads, electricity,
settlements etc

  • 5. Subsistence Uses non-scientific / unsafe traditional practices like small wooden sail boats that can only travel 5 Kms into the sea . Unpredicted fish catch due to the limited distance Nets are made up small sized holes which trap the baby fishes Rope those are Non-washable Unhygienic storage and conditions at the harbor 5 Ms Asma AkbarAli
  • 6. 6 Ms Asma AkbarAli Commercial Fishing is the main occupation in the coastal settlements of Sindh and Baluchistan. The fisheries are developed for the purpose of selling . 68% of the total marine catch is derived from the Sindh coast Commercial fishermen use both the traditional boats and new modernized boats but more use mechanized/motor boats that can travel 50 to 60 Kms into the sea. Gill netters that have holes of the size of particular fish they want to catch are used so therefore other fishes and baby fishes are not trapped in the net. Washable ropes The Makran commercial fishing centers are Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, Jiwani, Sonmiani . The Sindh commercial center it is Karachi
  • 8.  Inland fishing is practiced in or near lakes and rivers.  Fish ponds/farms are developed in Punjab Sindh & KPK  The fish Farms are made of rectangular human-made ponds for breeding fish . They have a concrete base to prevent water loss through leakages or seepage . The sides are solidified with mud  Trees are planted around these farms to provide oxygen, minimize evaporation, and keep water body cool. This facilitates growth and fertilization of fish 8 Ms Asma AkbarAli

Facilities for storage, refrigerators , ice factories are being provided and specific areas are being allocated for sorting, processing and packing of fishes. Ms Asma AkbarAli 14
  • 17. The tradition way of processing fish for preserving is done manually by cleaning, cutting , salting and drying. Fishes that are not yet processed are kept separately , Government has installed 16 ice factories at the Makran coast for freezing and preserving the fishes 6 at Gwadar 1 at SurBander 2 in Jiwani 4 in Pasni 3 in Ormara Ms Asma AkbarAli 17
  • 20.  Enjoys both domestic and International demand  Marine fish catch is sold locally through street hawkers and local suppliers to restaurants and hotels  Frozen, cooked and processed fish is supplied to the departmental stores and sold in open restaurants Ms Asma AkbarAli 20
