In regards to the uses of small and large dams, both dams store water that is
supplied for irrigation, domestic and industrial use. The large dams however
are also able to produce hydropower and are effective for flood control whereas
the small dams are not effective in these aspects because of their small size
and less capacity to store water. Also, there are some management and
constructive benefits acquired from size, example Tarbela large dams that is
143 meters and Mangla another large dam that is 138 meters compared to the
small dams like khajeer dam that is 15 meters height the construction cost,
maintenance efforts for preventing and treating siltation is lower just like the
environmental damage and evacuation of people for small dams will be much
less than the 40,000 people evacuated for building Mangla dam. About 150
plus small dams are built in Pakistan because these are built in shorter
duration and are functional immediately after construction whereas the larger
dams take longer duration to build and to functionalize
