3. Duties and Responsibilities
During the weekly clinic, it was my job to act as a Clinic Manager, often
alongside my preceptor. This included a variety of duties, such as…
Being first to arrive at clinic location, and last to depart, in order to set up
and break down (chairs, tables, medical supplies, registration, etc.)
The organization of volunteers (ensuring every role is covered, contacting no
show volunteers, updating on clinic changes, handling various
issues/concerns)
Ensuring the continuous flow of the clinic operations (making sure patients
get through every phase in a timely manner)
Initiating patient referrals to specialist (filling out paperwork with pt.)
Distributing gift cards to patients for their prescription fillings
4. Objective/Intern Project #1
To develop and execute a plan for the
recruitment of college aged volunteers to
Xenos Free Clinics. This must include at least
two presentations to different groups of
college students, explaining; clinic history,
mission, vision, values, and volunteer
positions.
5. Post-Internship Evaluation of
Objective
I did develop a plan to recruit more college volunteers,
which included:
Presenting to different groups of college students
Having a Powerpoint slide ran before and after
Xenos’ church meetings for college students
Asking for adult volunteers to refer student
volunteers (many have children in the area)
6. Post-Internship Evaluation of
Objective
Presenting volunteer opportunities to the different groups went well. For
one group, I went and talked to them directly, in addition to giving some
handouts. For the other, I had another college volunteer from the clinic
present on my behalf. We’ve already seen students come to check out
the clinic and its potential volunteer opportunity.
Putting up an informational slide during the church gatherings has just
recently been implemented.
We continue to solicit the adult volunteers for recommendations of college-
aged volunteers.
7. Objective/Intern Project #2
To research and identify available resources in
the area (Franklinton and West Side of
Columbus) that would be useful for the
referral of clinic patients. Helpful resources
should be compiled in an organized document
for the use of clinic volunteers.
8. Post-Internship Evaluation of
Objective
This assignment didn’t go as planned. As I sat down with our huge resource
book (made from years of collecting papers explaining the different
services in Columbus), I decided it wouldn’t be a good use of my time, or
the clinic’s, to sort through all of it just to make a new listing. But
rather, we should explore more efficient options. I will propose that the
clinic uses “Hands-On Ohio”, an online resource that uses a filtered
search engine to find resources for for people in need. It’s the newly
released online database for 211. With our facility being wi-fi capable,
this would be an easy tool for volunteers to use with the clinics
computer. It would also allow us to recommend more customizable
resources.
9. Into the Wide World
The experience and opportunities I have gotten while working as a clinic
manager at Xenos Free Clinic will be invaluable in my future. To be able to
get out of the classroom and work with real people dealing with real life
concerns in the medical setting is really an eye-opening experience.
Not only has serving the impoverished been a way for me to give back to the
Columbus community, but it has allowed me to see what it is like to be part
of a healthcare team from an administrative perspective; confirming my
career choice in healthcare management, and showing me the importance of
creating an organizational environment where quality, affordable, and
accessible healthcare delivery is the norm rather than the exception.
10. Into the Wide World continued...
It was also a humbling experience to develop relationships with some who
are homeless, others who just recently lost their health insurance, and
everyone on the spectrum in between. It really gave me a heart for people
who have less than myself and taught me to treat them with respect and
dignity.
I was delighted that I had the opportunity to use a lot of the things I’ve
learned in my Health Sciences and Public Health classes. This includes topics
like disparities, US policy in healthcare, clinical counseling, community
health, and many more.
Overall this was a very rewarding experience that I look forward to continuing
to learn from.
