1. Good day, C8
Family
Pardon me for taking creative
liberties but this year, I’d like
to do things out of the box for
my portfolio. This is not
intended to come off less
professional nor is it to make
light of the evaluation
process. It is my own way of
expressing to my work
family where I am at as a
professional and where I am
heading and striving for as an
individual.
Good day and God Bless.
Joy
nnn
Nurse, wanna-be writer, loving
daughter, sister and proud,
doting aunt-- I have been an RN
for 16 years.
Yes, even I
have
trouble
believing
that myself.
Those
sixteen
years have
gone by like
sepia-hazed
snapshots in a Kodak Carousel.
I’ve lived in three countries,
taken five kinds of qualifying
exams, and worked in six health
institutions of varying sizes,
acuities, specialties and health
populations. I’ve had experiences
in Medical-Surgical, Pediatric,
ER, OB-GYN, Labor &
Delivery, Urology OR &
Recovery, Ambulatory Surgery,
Geriatric and quite recently and
extensively, Organ Transplant.
You’ve probably
seen me, run
into me or
worked with me
down the halls
of 8 Gudelsky
the last seven
years or so.
You’ve seen me
at work and
working hard. You’ve seen me in
my element and in very human
moments I do not happen to be
proud of. Wether you know my
name or my face or barely know
me at all, my one goal has always
been to continue to make a
difference in this world through
the profession that has chosen
me as much as I have chosen it.

2. been nothing but positive and reaffirms my pride in being a
Transplant nurse.
American Nephrology Nurses’ Association
I have been a member of this organization since 2011 and
have availed of their membership benefits particularly
subscription to Nephrology Nursing Journal and their many
webinars and online CEU classes which I have found very
pertinent to our practice in Transplant Nursing.
American Association of Critical Care
Nurses
I have been a member since 2011 after C8 has transitioned
into an IMC and I was pulled to the SICU for training. My
brief time in an ICU setting has piqued my interest in topics
related to both Critical Care and Transplantation. Their website has given me opportunities to access
their CEU courses and webinars. I am also getting member subscription from their bi-monthly clinical
practice journal, Critical Care Nurse.
Professional Organizations
International Transplant Nurses Society
I’ve been an active member since 2007-2008 and I have
attended two of their Annual Symposiums and General
Assembly in St. Louis, MO in 2008 and Montreal, Canada
in 2009-- both as a representative of UMMC to their Staff
Nurse SIG. I would have loved to attend last year’s
symposium in Göteborg, Sweden as well as that of that in
Seattle, WA for 2012 if not for schedule conflicts and
economic reasons. My experience with this organization and its members from all over the globe have

3. EBP/PI Continuum
HOSPITAL BASED EVIDENCE-BASED
PROJECT/ PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
UNIT BASED EBP/PI
I.Morning Labs EBP/PI--for one week the C8 night shift nurses in cooperation with phlebotomy
have gathered data to recognize the factors that delay completion of AM labs. As a result new steps
have been made such as lab order checks at the start of the shift, lab list and labels reconciliation,
improved lab add-on process and an earlier draw time of AM labs have resulted to a higher
percentage of patients having their lab results posted on time thus lessening a cause of delay in the
discharge process.
II. Hourly Rounding PI--the C8 Patient Education Council is responsible for auditing compliance
and documentation of hourly rounding for patient safety.
III. PI for Transplant and Transplant Medication Patient Education Plan in the Power
Chart- the Patient Education Council is currently working on improving the above-mentioned
Patient Education categories in the PowerChart Form Browser into becoming more specific and
pertinent to our practice in Transplant and what we teach our patient population.
I. Focus on Safety PI-- every month Lisa Rowen CNO and the Staff Nurse Council discuss incidences
and issues that may have caused harm or potentially harmed a patient. Issues such as medication
safety have lead to regular communication with Pharmacy Services through Pharmacy Updates
(discussed below). The council has also prompted the medical center to stock our own supply of
specialty low beds to be readily used for High Fall Risk patients. Currently we are working with
Biomedical Engineering on improving safety with Alaris IV pumps.
II. Pharmacy PI--regular monthly meetings between the Staff Nurse Council and Bethany
Shelbourne, Assistant Director for Inpatient Pharmacy Services to eliminate errors in dispensing
medications.
III. Patients Going Off the Floor Policy EBP/PI-- for the last quarter of 2011 and the early part
of 2012 the council has discussed, gathered information and spearheaded the creation of policy on
patients leaving their respective units and the medical center itself for non-medical purposes raising
concerns on infection control and patient safety. Guidelines have been developed on January 2012 and
implemented on April 1, 2012.

Committee Appointments
As the field of nursing is a constant learning experience, this council has never failed to school me on the
workings of an institution, healthcare and the large role Nursing lends to their success. Our monthly
discussions on issues regarding patient safety, quality of care, patient outcomes, and nursing practice
have not only been productive in action but also very empowering in its advocacy for patients and their
families and for the nurses who care for them. The group meets every second Friday of the month and is
headed by Lisa Rowen DNSc, RN,FAAN, Senior Vice President and CNO and Co-Chair Chris Byerly
BSN, RNC-NIC, SCN-II NICU.
The group works on implementing strategies for more effective strategies to educate both staff and
patient population on pre- and post-transplant routine, home medications, signs and symptoms of
infection and rejection and optimum post discharge health practices. The group is chaired by Christina
Convocar-Velarde BSN, RN and advised by Francisca Nwugwo RN SCN II.

6. Community Service
RURAL EDUCATIONAL & CULTURAL OUTREACH PROGRAM
(RECOP)
This local non-governmental organization from the Philippines has a special place in my
heart for it is based in my hometown, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental. It is run by a good
family friend, Carmel Osmena-Orbida and her husband, Jet Orbida. RECOP is an 18-man
volunteer group who go into 2-day outreach programs in impoverished far-flung rural
mountain and seaside communities of Negros Occidental, my home province. Elements of
the program are providing nutritious meals, First Aid and CPR Workshop, Interactive
Storytelling sessions, Art and Culture Workshops, film showings, Art Exhibits and
Competitions. They also provide free slippers, recycled tarpaulin bags (children in such
communities often don’t have footwear and school bags. Also the bags are crafted by the
local women who reside near Carmel’s seaside property she aptly calls Peace Pond) and
school supplies for ALL students and medicine kits, rice and certificates to parent-graduates
of our First Aid and CPR Workshops. I have long wanted to tag along on one of these
outreach efforts and have offered my services to Carmel and her crew if I ever am in the
country.
Please take the chance to look into their website: http://recop.weebly.com/index.html
and also their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Support.RECOP.

7. INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S SURGICAL FOUNDATION
One of my most vivid memory of nursing school was looking at the doctor and nurse
volunteers of this organization in action in the decrepit government hospital where the
poorest of my country men would go and, where we did an extensive amount of clinical
exposure as students. Their commitment, charity and openness to be in such a strange new
country with a culture worlds different from theirs, left quite a great impression on me. I’ve
been in their database since 2010 and currently awaiting the perfect time and opportunity
to be in one of their missions.

OPERATION SMILE
President and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Geoff Williams is friends with my former mentor
and boss Dr. Enirgardo Legislador Jr., Chief Medical Officer of Southern Negros Doctor’s
Hospital in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, PH, which is one of the many cities in the
Third World that ICSF holds its missions in. Dr. Legislador has recommended me to volunteer
for this organization aside from Operation Smile and I have had communication with Dr.
Williams about the possibility time-willing.

8. Goals for the Next Year
GOAL 1
To help out my favorite organizations not just financially but by finding time to actually volunteer my
skills and experience. Global health through the years, I have realized, has become quite my passion. I
find that to be involved with the above-mentioned groups appeals to my love for travel, cultural
immersion, health promotion and altruism specially towards women, children and the elderly of
countries in need. Having been from born and raised in the Third World myself, it is my way of giving
back to the roots that have nurtured me to grow and blossom.
GOAL 2
To continue to be involved with nursing governance both on the floor and in the unit and also to help
with the elevation of nursing practice in the unit by attaining certification related to my field.
