1. HEALTH 420 - INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Intern's Final Evaluation/Reflection
Answer each question completely in the internship section of your portfolio you may integrate
responses to these questions any way you feel is logical.
1. Review your goals and objectives for your internship and assess your internship site
as it provided a setting for achieving those goals and objectives.
At the beginning of my internship in the Medical Staff Services Department I made a list
of goals and objectives for myself to fulfill throughout the time that I would spend at
Oconee Memorial Hospital. The first and second goal regarding the Qgenda project and
the TelmedIQ project were projects similar to each other, and I was able to assist in the
completion of both of these projects. I was able to input data into EchoCloud and into
Qgenda in order for the projects to be correct, and I was also able to attend meetings that
were in regards to the two systems pertaining to their progress and where the committee
was with educating staff and rolling out the systems to the staff at Oconee Memorial and
the surrounding practices that are affiliated with Oconee Memorial. My preceptor, Lois
Blakley, gave me the opportunity to create an informational bulletin board about Qgenda
and TelmedIQ that gave the staff an idea of what the two call scheduling systems are
capable of doing. My final goal/project was a performance satisfaction survey that I was
given the opportunity to create. I was able to contact office managers and get feedback on
the survey questions to better edit them to fit the needs of the Medical Staff office. I met
with Mrs. Blakley about the survey before sending it out to providers and office
managers for responses, and have now received several responses from office managers
and providers. This internship site has done a phenomenal job with trying to help my
growth as a professional and allowing me to be a part of projects, and to complete
projects on my own.
2. Explain and show how you achieved the goals you set.
For the first two goals that Mrs. Blakley and I had set for myself I was able to complete a
lot of data entry for the Qgenda and TelmedIQ call schedule project. I was also able to create a
presentation giving ideas about an informational bulletin board that I was given the opportunity
to design. I was able to be apart of meetings that discussed the progress and concerns that the
projects were having as well. The performance satisfaction survey project I was able to construct
a survey using SurveyMonkey. Once the survey was drafted I was able to communicate with
office managers about the questions and was able to get feedback on whether or not to edit any
questions to better reach the scope of the survey. Once edited, I was able to meet with Mrs.
Blakley and discuss the survey, and how we would be able to get the survey out to its
respondents. After the survey was completed, I sent it out to several office managers and
providers, and now have several responses.
2. 3. Choose one project/assignment and describe it as follows:
I will be discussing the Performance Satisfaction Survey.
a. How well do you think you accomplished the project or dealt with the
experience(s)?
I feel that I handled the experience of creating a survey for the Medical Staff Services
Department very well. I tried to research other customer satisfaction surveys before creating one
to ensure that I would stay on the right track, but I also wanted to encase the domain of
onboarding a provider in the survey so that it was specific and useful to their needs.
b. What skills did you use? (e.g. writing, speaking, organizing, interpersonal,
counseling, management, research, etc.)
To complete this project I used my research skills to determine what types of questions to
create for the survey to ensure that it related to the Medical Staff Office’s needs. I also used
writing skills when writing the survey and composing emails to the office managers and
providers. Communication skills were also used while discussing the questions with practice
managers and also while presenting the questions to Mrs. Blakley and deliberating on the
questions. Some computer skills were also used to navigate the SurveyMonkey website learning
how to create the web link to send out to the office managers and providers, and also learning
how to analyze the results once they came back in.
c. Point out your strengths and weaknesses. What would you do differently?
During this project I would say that my strengths came in constructing and editing the
survey. While I would not say communication is a weakness, I do think my form of
communication during the editing process gave me a disadvantage. I emailed office managers
for input on the questions of the survey to ensure that I was entailing everything that was
important to onboarding providers. I have come to realize that office managers don’t have much
time, and to sit and deliberate survey questions with me over email was very time consuming. I
would have gotten better feedback if I had contacted them via telephone to discuss the survey
questions instead, which is what I would have done differently.
4. Assess your contribution to the internship site.
During my time in the Medical Staff Services Department I feel that I have contributed in
a lot of aspects. The department is made up of two individuals, Mrs. Blakley and Mrs. Freeman,
whom I assisted to the best of my ability while learning the field of medical credentialing. I tried
to make myself useful with any tasks that they both needed me to work on. I have helped with
meeting minutes that allowed Mrs. Blakley to prioritize other tasks that were more pressing at
times as well. My biggest contribution that I hope makes a large impact is the Performance
Satisfaction survey. My hope for the survey is that it will help the Medical Staff Services
Department to help gauge their performance with the office managers and with the providers, so
that in the future their success as a department is recorded.
3. 5. Has your experience changed or reinforced your career goals. Changed or
reinforced your educational goals? Could you see yourself as a professional in this
field?
My experience at this internship has only reinforced my career goals of wanting to be in
management in a healthcare facility. It has shown me that there are a lot of different managerial
opportunities that I never realized before. It has also reinforced my educational goals because I
would like to go back for my Masters in Public Health in the future to further my career. I can
see myself as a manager of medical credentialing, and it is something that I think that I would
consider working towards.
6. Relate your internship experience to your academic work on campus. List at least 5
specific courses (by title, not number) in your major that were useful at this site.
Health Policy Ethics and Law: Taking this course gave me the knowledge and
foundation that I needed in order to understand not only the importance, but also the
implications that policies have on healthcare. In the Medical Staff Office, the Medical
Care Committee meets regularly to review, revise, and/or approve new or existing
policies and procedures. This requires you to be up to date on the different policies and
procedures that are being reviewed.
Medical Terminology and Communication: Medical Terminology gave me the
background that I needed to understand some of the medical terms that are used in a
hospital setting. While I am not working in the clinical side of the hospital where
medical terms are used more prevalently, I do encounter medical terms that this course
helped with my understanding.
Managing Health Service Organizations: The course Managing Health Service
Organizations was helpful to me in better understanding part time and full time
employees. While at my internship there were weekly manager meetings where updates
were given in many areas one regarding FTE’s and PTE’s. The meetings also entailed a
system that the hospital uses that helps them to be productive and solve problems quickly
and efficiently, another aspect that this course also touches on.
Financial Management and Budgeting for Health Service Organizations: This course
was useful to me while I was interning in the medical staff office because there were
monthly financial reports that would be reviewed at the managers meetings, and this
course helped me to better understand the items that were being discussed in the
organization.
Public Health Communications: Communication is always a huge part of making a
good impact at any job site. It is very important that you are able to communicate
effectively with medical providers and office managers at this job, and this course made
it easier to be able to communicate with medical professionals in a health care setting.
4. 7. Were there instances at your site where the health literacy training were utilized?
Explain.
At my internship site I did not have to utilize the health literacy training due to the fact
that my department does not directly handle and communicate with patients.
