Internship Reflection
1. HEALTH 4200 - INTERNSHIP
EXPERIENCE
Intern's Final
Evaluation/Reflection (To be
completed by Intern)
PURPOSE: to help you reflect on and evaluate your total internship experience.
1. Review your goals and objectives for your internship and assess your
internship site as it provided a setting for achieving those goals and
objectives.
a. The Sullivan Center enabled me to achieve the goals I set
forth at the start of the internship. For one, it allowed
significant patient interaction with the ability to perform
basic medical treatment and procedures. Furthermore, being
able to work with the providers and APPs at the Center
allowed me to better understand how to critically think about
patients on a broader spectrum, as I progress into PA school
myself. Also, by interning at the JFSC, I better understood
how a clinic is able to conductmulti-site serving abilities in
underserved populations. Not only from the patient treatment
capabilities, but also from the management aspect as well.
Lastly, having worked with the APPs at the clinic, I was able
to better understand and discuss how they treat patients in
the primary-care setting, as that is a field I am looking to
advance into after graduating from MUSC.
2. Explain and show how you achieved the goals you set.
a. I achieved my goals via the following methods:
• Learned via the staff how to work within the AllScripts charting
program for each of the categories listed.
• Talked to the providers and developed a working relationship
with them on how they like their charts.
• Had the staff review my charting abilities and learned to
improve.
• Discussed patient cases with the providers and learned
how they thought and address their individual patient
cases.
• Learned assessment and examination skills by
shadowing the providers on certain patients.
• Provided the providers with my thoughts and
discussionon certain patients’ treatment options and
2. how I would address each patient, as if I was a
provider.
• Discussed with the medical staff about certain
populations they focus upon, why, and how?
• Learned the objectives of the Center via their program
goals and talking with the various staff members.
• Talked the Nurse Practitioners about their roles in
patient care
• Observed how the providers interact, work with and
treat their patients as I interned at the Center.
3. Chooseone project/assignment and describe it:
a. Future Interns Quick Reference Guide: I believe I dealt with
and accomplished the project well. The staff at the JFSC
Clinic asked for me to consolidate multiple documents and
concepts into a quick reference guide for future interns
rotating through the clinic. With the flow of the clinic and the
charting system, AllScripts, it all can be overwhelming for
new interns; even the documents the Center had to help
interns was extensive. Having created the quick-reference
guide, future interns can carry it with them and easily access
the most vital tasks to keep the flow of the clinic successful.
Skills I used to accomplish this were the following: research,
writing, speaking, organizing, interpersonal skills, and
management. My strengths on this topic are the following:
previous background in medicine, charting, leadership,
research and management. My weakness would include:
learning the system myself and only being available a few
days a week to talk with some of the interns and not all of
them. If I had to do the project again, I would talk more
directly with all the interns and volunteers to make sure
everyone’s issues and concerns were completely addressed.
4. Assess your contribution to the internship site.
a. I believe my overall contribution to the Sullivan Center was
beneficial. By being another “hand to help”, the flow of the
clinic and overall patient treatment was successful;having a
background in medicine and leadership, I believe I was able
to guide the other interns when they needed and asked for
3. assistance. Also, I believe that the staff could trust me more
due to my background and quick learning abilities.
5. Has your experience changed or reinforced your career goals. Changed
orreinforced your educational goals? Could you see yourself as a
professional in this field?
a. My internship experience reinforced my career goal of
being a Physician Assistant even more so;it further
strengthened my resolve that I picked the correctfield for
me, and the field of medicine that I can besthelp my fellow
mankind. I can easily see myself in the next 5-10 years
being a preceptorfor fellow interns and helping to guide
them in their career and educational goals, as well.
6. Relate your internship experience to your academic work on campus.
List at least 5 specific courses (by title, not number) either in your major
or outside your major that were useful at this site.
a. My internship required many skills and knowledge I had
acquired from previous courses I had taken at Clemson
University. These included the following courses:
Introduction to Public Health, Health Care Systems,
Determinants of Health Behavior, Medical Terminology
and Human Health & Disease. These courses taught me
vital skills and knowledge on how to deal with a variety of
patients from different cultures and backgrounds, the
healthcare system in general, medical terminology, and
basic holistic health problems that I encountered.
7. Were there instances at your site where the health literacy training
were utilized? Explain.
a. Yes, there were many instances where the health
literacy training was utilized. This included many times
of patient education on their symptoms and illnesses,
treatments and overall health promotion and education.
