What is narrative
A2 Media.
Narrative is the way the story is told. There are many theories to how a story is told. Theories are
created by theorists. Narratives also have codes and conventions they need to follow.
A well known theory is Todarov’s equilibrium and disequilibrium theory. The theory is about all
characters having equilibrium until a problem happens, leading to disequilibrium. To solve the
disequilibrium characters need to go through a resolution. Then they go back to the equilibrium. Many
TV series’ use this theory; IT crowd and White Collar use this theory a lot in their episodes. There are
many other theories that can be used in media texts such as enigma codes that let stories be told
without directly telling the audience.
Todarov’s narrative theory
Narratives codes and conventions depend on what the genre is. For example in Action adventure movies
a convention is that is the protagonists faces obstacles that they need to overcome in order to finish
their goal. Another example is that social realism movies need to be in real locations rather than in
studios for that sense of realism.
