5. KPK Province supports rich
biological diversity
KPK Province supports rich biological diversity spreading
throughout the province. The richness of fauna can be
judged from the fact that 98 species of mammals, 456
species of birds and 48 species of reptiles are found in the
province as compared to 188 species of mammals, 668
species of birds and 177 species of reptiles found in
Pakistan

6. KPK Province supports rich
biological diversity
 The Province has a unique status throughout the country
with regard to the diversity of wildlife habitats and
species. Some of the distinctive features of wildlife of
KPK are mentioned below:
 The Province supports world’s largest surviving
population of Kashmir Markhor.
 The Province supports world’s largest surviving
population of Western Tragopan Pheasant.
 KPK is the only Province having five out of six species of
pheasants found in Pakistan including Western Tragopan,
Monal, Koklass, Cheer and Kalij.

7. KPK Province supports rich
biological diversity
1. KPK is the only Province which supports all the four sub-
species of Markhor out of five found in Pakistan including
Kashmir, Kabul , Astor and Suleman.
2. This Province supports all the sub-species of Urial found
in Pakistan including Punjab , Laddakh and Afghan.
3. Two species of Bear including Brown and Black are
found in the Province.

8. KPK Province supports rich
biological diversity
 Eight species of wild cat including two large cats, Snow
leopard and Common leopard, are found in the
Province.
 Four species of Partridges including Grey, Black, See-see
and Chukar are found throughout the Province.
 Palas valley of Kohistan District in KPK is internationally
recognized as hot spot of biodiversity.

9. KPK Province supports rich
biological diversity
1. KPK supports critical staging grounds on Indus Fly way
for migratory Water Birds, Falcons, Bustards, Sand
grouses and other birds’ species, besides breeding
grounds for many altitudinal migrant birds’ species.
2. KPK supports quite a few representative pockets of
Western classified as Endemic Birds Area (EBA) by
Birdlife International
