Pre-Production
Pre-production Assessment
Locations
My original plan was to use the North Yorkshire Moors to carry out my photoshoots for my production but
after doing some testing in York and Leeds and thinking more about a theme of using cities and the
architecture or water and the fact fuel prices are skyrocketing, I feel like using what is on my front door or
even a short train journey away would be more economical but also makes more sense.
York offers a lot of different opportunities with the minster (at sunrise, midday, sunset and in the dark), the
river with the different bridges and in general in a historic city so there’s opportunities there.
Leeds offers a different side because it’s more of a built-up city with modern architecture, you have the
River Aire and the Canals.
Accessing the opportunities that York presents me is easy because town is just a couple of miles away so
it’s easy to access via foot or cycling. Even in bad weather it’s still easy to access via a bus. The cost of using
York would only really be getting the bus in bad weather or buying refreshments during the day.
Using Leeds would mean having a bit more of a cost because Leeds about a 55–60-minute journey via train
so getting an all day return ticket plus refreshments during the day would give you a larger cost. An off-
peak return is around ÂŁ12.50-ÂŁ20. A normal return ticket is about ÂŁ3.20 each way so total cost around
ÂŁ6.40 so multiple days using the train will slowly build up.
Having three days in college a week I would have to use the days outside of college effectively and
knowing the weather in England is awfully unpredictable so you can’t say I’m going to travel that exact day
because if that day is then a wash out and all your attempted photos end up looking poor you have lost a
day of production and your money.
Equipment
My equipment list is relatively small and simple because I only need what I’m going to take
pictures with, a tripod if I choose to use one.
Needed Equipment:
Canon SX730 HS camera
Nikon D3400 camera- including extra bigger lens (Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 DX)
Nikon Lens Shade (in case the sun affects your pictures too much)
A tripod that would be okay for both cameras (if required)
A good thing is I already own everything I believe I will need to use during the production
stage. This is an advantage because it means if I need to take more I don’t need to be asking
to use college equipment and having the risk of what I needed already been gone and then
meaning you might have to use something your not use to and therefore causing a struggle
because you can’t find the settings you need.
I have also been looking into the settings and how to use certain techniques and that
means should one camera run out of battery, storage or if anything happens I have that
back up camera which yes is bad but knowing I have the backup there and knowing how to
find the certain settings I need to carry on the shoot and not lose valuable time.
Style
The original plan was to use a style of trying to capture nature with the gorgeous
setting of the sunrise and sunset but after taking picture in York and Leeds I felt a
change.
Obviously, I do I did pick landscape photography but after seeing that I had such a
historical town on my doorstep and a more modern 21st century architecture my ideas
changed, and a theme came into my mind a lot easier.
That does maybe change the overall style from something that could have been
something colorful and eye catching to maybe something a little more subtle but
thinking about the bigger picture and the costs of petrol and the moors been at least a
45–50-minute drive going both ways will consume fuel at an alarming rate.
Visual Planning
Storyboarding
• Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
• Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
• Provides a basis for production
• Suggested online storyboard creators are:
– http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
– http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own
images]
• Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard
and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
Shot List
• Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
• It should work in partnership with your storyboard
• It will be your working document when you film
• It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
• It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
• Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-
production folder.
Type of shots I wish to capture
My theme is Man Vs Nature and York is a very
historic town so it provides me a chance to find
places that is more dominated to one side of my
theme and some the other. These pictures are ones
I would really like to try capture and use in my
work. The walls running to the minster is prefect
because you get the classic history of the walls and
minster combined with the grass bank and tree line
just appearing. The minster also is something I
really want to use because it’s history, it’s beauty
and it is really the main attraction of York.
Organisational Planning
Location information
• Information and images of your location[s] for
filming
• You should have address details,
clearance/permissions for filming, recce photos
and floorplans [including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
• Where possible, have a plan B fallback location
option
• Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
Location 1- York
• The original plan was to use the North
Yorkshire moors but after thinking into the
current fuel issues and so on I decided after
going out and photographing some small chunks
in York without using any settings or modes and
seeing that York does have so many places that
offer potential to capture breath-taking pictures
through different points of the day.
• I still want to use that idea of capturing the
sunrise and sunset and use the golden hour and
it got me thinking about using the minster and
having the yellow, orange glow around the stain
glass windows. The shambles also present
another chance to capture a mix of the old
building with the glow coming through and
lighting the streets.
• Looking at the type of pictures of York on the
right I really like the one from the walls looking
at the mister because I feel like with a sunset or
sunrise the color along with the historic building
would create something I really like and if I play
around with the ISO settings, I could hit a
winner.
Location 1- York
More Locations in York
• Scarborough Bridge- Scarborough Bridge for
me is a vital piece because you have so
much potential with it. You have the actual
railway tracks leading to the station, the
river looking into the city, the river looking
away from the city, or even standing
underneath capturing the sun reflecting as
you see into town. This to me is the prefect
link into my theme because you have the
Man made bridge against the nature of the
river.
• The River Ouse- The river holds so much
potential because like the bridge it links the
theme together on both side because you
have nature with the river against man on
either river side. The image to right shows
this prefect, the built up edges with this still
blue water in the centre. I feel like as well
the river can be used with different types of
weather because in the sun you can capture
a gorgeous reflection, night you can see the
moon, in the rain you can capture the drops
hitting the water and causing movement.
Production Schedule
• Your schedule should budget a total of 10
hours for production, that is for the filming
and editing of your project.
• You should plan when you’re filming and how
you intend to use the in class days on your
timetable/class schedule

Health and Safety
Potential
Issue
How it can be avoided
Getting in the way of
traffic
(Getting hit by a car)
During the photography make sure the camera is away while near traffic
or walking in the road.
Remember to take photos still and safe
Annoying people by
blocking them or causing a
disruption
Make sure you keep out the middle of paths, allowing people to pass
safely before trying to take pictures
Losing equipment or
causing damage to
equipment
When not taking pictures have camera safely stored in a bag or pocket.
Prevents any drops or you catching it on something and it breaking
Evaluate the safety of the
locations you visit
Visit the location before the actual day the photographs will be taken. If it
looks safe and suitable continue with the plan as planned, if it does not
then change your plan and find a different location
Post Picture Taking/Image processing
Needs
• Pictures
• Photoshop
My plans for post picture taking is to sit down and take a look the collection of pictures I have gathered over
the time I was out getting them. In total I am expecting there to be around 200-300 pictures and there is no
way even half will be getting used so looking through and seeing the best selection means when I’m back in
college I can easily find the best ones and start a processing sequence.
For the actual image processing I have been trying to find skills and little tricks on photoshop so I can really
make the pictures eye catching but making sure they still look real. Thinking about to creating my front cover
for my NFL magazine I really struggled with it and I feel it wasn’t the greatest so this time I have been looking
into photoshop some more to help me out. I do want to try have some pictures in black and white just to
have a different selection of final pictures but black and white is the history and linking the now and then
together in one could potentially help me keep everything linked throughout the booklet.
The theme is Nature Vs Man so during the post picture taking I need to make sure I am returning my
attention to the theme and not losing track of the theme that is meant to hold everything together, this also
plays a part in editing/processing because I can’t over do things because the overall point will get lost and it
will end up looking like a magazine of over edited rubbish that no one would want to lay eyes on.
Also during the process I need to remember my target audience and how well what I change and edit will
help them enjoy the booklet or maybe make them dislike if I go too far.
Photoshop Skills: Changing to black and white
Adjusting brightness, vibrance, exposure
Production of Final Product
Final Product Plan- Exhibition Booklet
What is needed?
• Pictures
• Possible small amount of text
• Ideas for the layout
An exhibition booklet provides me with something that can really be anything I’d like it to be. Yes it’s going to have pictures
but the rest is in my control so I need to think how many pictures per page?, How many pages in general?, How many
pictures should I have ready to be used?
Looking at Mark Banks’ exhibitions of Norway and Venice on his website I started to get more of an idea as to what my plan
would be and how I could go about it. Banks’ online exhibition has you in a first person mode as if your walking around from
picture to picture obviously this is different for me because I’m creating a booklet which is hand held and allows people to
flick back and forth quickly and easily.
After I spent the first week processing my pictures I ended up with 9 fully processed and ready pictures, so knowing the
amount I have ready if it was to be created now I would go for 2 pictures per page across 4 pages leaving 1 image which I
could use on a fifth page which would act as a cover for the booklet. I could however process another image and have 2
pictures per page (with a possible small chunk of text under to describe the image) across 5 pages and design a cover myself
creating a 6 page booklet with 5 pages of pictures. I could also go with a 9 page booklet and allow each picture to be the
centre of its own attention but that would total the final price up a bit more so that has to be considered.
Looking at the big picture the biggest decision comes with how many pictures per page against how many pages I wish to use.
If I decide on a final amount of pages it then makes the layout of pictures easier because I can then scale everything until I
run out of pictures.
My initial idea is to go with a one picture per page idea but include a tiny caption explaining the picture like what you get
inside Art Galleries or a Museum.
I want to make sure during the process of creating the booklet I keep in mind who it is really for and how what I’m putting
together piece by piece links to what they would be interested in and would keep the attention.
Exhibition: If the exhibition was to really be carried out I would
need a medium amount of space, print the pictures and frame
them. Then have the best ones hung up so people can walk
around freely enjoying it.

Capturing History and Nature in York

  • 3. Locations My original plan was to use the North Yorkshire Moors to carry out my photoshoots for my production but after doing some testing in York and Leeds and thinking more about a theme of using cities and the architecture or water and the fact fuel prices are skyrocketing, I feel like using what is on my front door or even a short train journey away would be more economical but also makes more sense. York offers a lot of different opportunities with the minster (at sunrise, midday, sunset and in the dark), the river with the different bridges and in general in a historic city so there’s opportunities there. Leeds offers a different side because it’s more of a built-up city with modern architecture, you have the River Aire and the Canals. Accessing the opportunities that York presents me is easy because town is just a couple of miles away so it’s easy to access via foot or cycling. Even in bad weather it’s still easy to access via a bus. The cost of using York would only really be getting the bus in bad weather or buying refreshments during the day. Using Leeds would mean having a bit more of a cost because Leeds about a 55–60-minute journey via train so getting an all day return ticket plus refreshments during the day would give you a larger cost. An off- peak return is around ÂŁ12.50-ÂŁ20. A normal return ticket is about ÂŁ3.20 each way so total cost around ÂŁ6.40 so multiple days using the train will slowly build up. Having three days in college a week I would have to use the days outside of college effectively and knowing the weather in England is awfully unpredictable so you can’t say I’m going to travel that exact day because if that day is then a wash out and all your attempted photos end up looking poor you have lost a day of production and your money.
  • 4. Equipment My equipment list is relatively small and simple because I only need what I’m going to take pictures with, a tripod if I choose to use one. Needed Equipment: Canon SX730 HS camera Nikon D3400 camera- including extra bigger lens (Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 DX) Nikon Lens Shade (in case the sun affects your pictures too much) A tripod that would be okay for both cameras (if required) A good thing is I already own everything I believe I will need to use during the production stage. This is an advantage because it means if I need to take more I don’t need to be asking to use college equipment and having the risk of what I needed already been gone and then meaning you might have to use something your not use to and therefore causing a struggle because you can’t find the settings you need. I have also been looking into the settings and how to use certain techniques and that means should one camera run out of battery, storage or if anything happens I have that back up camera which yes is bad but knowing I have the backup there and knowing how to find the certain settings I need to carry on the shoot and not lose valuable time.
  • 5. Style The original plan was to use a style of trying to capture nature with the gorgeous setting of the sunrise and sunset but after taking picture in York and Leeds I felt a change. Obviously, I do I did pick landscape photography but after seeing that I had such a historical town on my doorstep and a more modern 21st century architecture my ideas changed, and a theme came into my mind a lot easier. That does maybe change the overall style from something that could have been something colorful and eye catching to maybe something a little more subtle but thinking about the bigger picture and the costs of petrol and the moors been at least a 45–50-minute drive going both ways will consume fuel at an alarming rate.
  • 7. Storyboarding • Your storyboard should bring your idea to life • Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video • Provides a basis for production • Suggested online storyboard creators are: – https://www.storyboardthat.com – http://www.pixton.com [very complicated] – http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images] • Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
  • 8. Shot List • Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video • It should work in partnership with your storyboard • It will be your working document when you film • It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see • It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc • Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre- production folder.
  • 9. Type of shots I wish to capture My theme is Man Vs Nature and York is a very historic town so it provides me a chance to find places that is more dominated to one side of my theme and some the other. These pictures are ones I would really like to try capture and use in my work. The walls running to the minster is prefect because you get the classic history of the walls and minster combined with the grass bank and tree line just appearing. The minster also is something I really want to use because it’s history, it’s beauty and it is really the main attraction of York.
  • 11. Location information • Information and images of your location[s] for filming • You should have address details, clearance/permissions for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts] • Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option • Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
  • 12. Location 1- York • The original plan was to use the North Yorkshire moors but after thinking into the current fuel issues and so on I decided after going out and photographing some small chunks in York without using any settings or modes and seeing that York does have so many places that offer potential to capture breath-taking pictures through different points of the day. • I still want to use that idea of capturing the sunrise and sunset and use the golden hour and it got me thinking about using the minster and having the yellow, orange glow around the stain glass windows. The shambles also present another chance to capture a mix of the old building with the glow coming through and lighting the streets. • Looking at the type of pictures of York on the right I really like the one from the walls looking at the mister because I feel like with a sunset or sunrise the color along with the historic building would create something I really like and if I play around with the ISO settings, I could hit a winner.
  • 13. Location 1- York More Locations in York • Scarborough Bridge- Scarborough Bridge for me is a vital piece because you have so much potential with it. You have the actual railway tracks leading to the station, the river looking into the city, the river looking away from the city, or even standing underneath capturing the sun reflecting as you see into town. This to me is the prefect link into my theme because you have the Man made bridge against the nature of the river. • The River Ouse- The river holds so much potential because like the bridge it links the theme together on both side because you have nature with the river against man on either river side. The image to right shows this prefect, the built up edges with this still blue water in the centre. I feel like as well the river can be used with different types of weather because in the sun you can capture a gorgeous reflection, night you can see the moon, in the rain you can capture the drops hitting the water and causing movement.
  • 14. Production Schedule • Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for production, that is for the filming and editing of your project. • You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
  • 16. Date Location Cast Activity Notes 13/04/22 York Myself Photography York Minster Walk around the minster accessing all angles. Use the sun light, use what else is around. Remember theme: Nature VS Man 20/04/22 York Station All platforms Myself Photography Focusing more on taking pictures that fit into the Man section. Capture the design of the station, sunlight coming through the windows, capturing trains leaving and arriving, visitors arriving and departing 22/04/22 York Myself Photography Focus more on finding locations where the theme can be shown and you can see both man and nature combined or a location where one used to be but now the other has taken over
  • 18. Date Location Cast Activity Notes 27,28,29/04/22 College Myself Processing Editing pictures Begin processing 2-3 images using the skills I had tested during my experiments. Play around with the brightness, the exposure, change one into black and white for a retro feel 4-5/05/22 College Myself Processing, Editing Planning final booklet Continue processing the rest of my favourite pictures until I have around 10 ready to go and be used. Maybe try a new trick and find a base layer (like old paper) and add that onto one so it has an old fashioned design 06/05/22 College Myself Final checking of images Begin creating booklet
  • 19. Health and Safety Potential Issue How it can be avoided Getting in the way of traffic (Getting hit by a car) During the photography make sure the camera is away while near traffic or walking in the road. Remember to take photos still and safe Annoying people by blocking them or causing a disruption Make sure you keep out the middle of paths, allowing people to pass safely before trying to take pictures Losing equipment or causing damage to equipment When not taking pictures have camera safely stored in a bag or pocket. Prevents any drops or you catching it on something and it breaking Evaluate the safety of the locations you visit Visit the location before the actual day the photographs will be taken. If it looks safe and suitable continue with the plan as planned, if it does not then change your plan and find a different location
  • 20. Post Picture Taking/Image processing Needs • Pictures • Photoshop My plans for post picture taking is to sit down and take a look the collection of pictures I have gathered over the time I was out getting them. In total I am expecting there to be around 200-300 pictures and there is no way even half will be getting used so looking through and seeing the best selection means when I’m back in college I can easily find the best ones and start a processing sequence. For the actual image processing I have been trying to find skills and little tricks on photoshop so I can really make the pictures eye catching but making sure they still look real. Thinking about to creating my front cover for my NFL magazine I really struggled with it and I feel it wasn’t the greatest so this time I have been looking into photoshop some more to help me out. I do want to try have some pictures in black and white just to have a different selection of final pictures but black and white is the history and linking the now and then together in one could potentially help me keep everything linked throughout the booklet. The theme is Nature Vs Man so during the post picture taking I need to make sure I am returning my attention to the theme and not losing track of the theme that is meant to hold everything together, this also plays a part in editing/processing because I can’t over do things because the overall point will get lost and it will end up looking like a magazine of over edited rubbish that no one would want to lay eyes on. Also during the process I need to remember my target audience and how well what I change and edit will help them enjoy the booklet or maybe make them dislike if I go too far. Photoshop Skills: Changing to black and white Adjusting brightness, vibrance, exposure
  • 21. Production of Final Product Final Product Plan- Exhibition Booklet What is needed? • Pictures • Possible small amount of text • Ideas for the layout An exhibition booklet provides me with something that can really be anything I’d like it to be. Yes it’s going to have pictures but the rest is in my control so I need to think how many pictures per page?, How many pages in general?, How many pictures should I have ready to be used? Looking at Mark Banks’ exhibitions of Norway and Venice on his website I started to get more of an idea as to what my plan would be and how I could go about it. Banks’ online exhibition has you in a first person mode as if your walking around from picture to picture obviously this is different for me because I’m creating a booklet which is hand held and allows people to flick back and forth quickly and easily. After I spent the first week processing my pictures I ended up with 9 fully processed and ready pictures, so knowing the amount I have ready if it was to be created now I would go for 2 pictures per page across 4 pages leaving 1 image which I could use on a fifth page which would act as a cover for the booklet. I could however process another image and have 2 pictures per page (with a possible small chunk of text under to describe the image) across 5 pages and design a cover myself creating a 6 page booklet with 5 pages of pictures. I could also go with a 9 page booklet and allow each picture to be the centre of its own attention but that would total the final price up a bit more so that has to be considered. Looking at the big picture the biggest decision comes with how many pictures per page against how many pages I wish to use. If I decide on a final amount of pages it then makes the layout of pictures easier because I can then scale everything until I run out of pictures. My initial idea is to go with a one picture per page idea but include a tiny caption explaining the picture like what you get inside Art Galleries or a Museum. I want to make sure during the process of creating the booklet I keep in mind who it is really for and how what I’m putting together piece by piece links to what they would be interested in and would keep the attention. Exhibition: If the exhibition was to really be carried out I would need a medium amount of space, print the pictures and frame them. Then have the best ones hung up so people can walk around freely enjoying it.

Editor's Notes

  1. You need to identify locations and plan a recce. What are the limitations and risks, e.g., distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this?
  2. What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When? Look at equipment hire places, etc
