3. Locations
I would need to take photographs at various places where there is good lighting and
beautiful nature features. I would also need to take photographs in places that would
suit abstract, and random style. Places for photography could include:
A beach – undecided. Maybe Scarborough, or Boggle Hole – Sunset/Sunrise, Abstract,
Random Photography.
Fairburn Ings – Spring Photography.
Wistow Lordship – Sunset, Spring Photography.
Cawood Back-roads – Sunset, Spring Photography.
My house – Abstract, Random, Spring, Astro Photography (in back garden).
My village – Abstract , Random, Spring, Sunset.
4. Location Recce
Fairburn Ings
I would not need to take anything to light up the
area because it is already well lit, and I would be
going there on a sunny day.
It is a busy place, so there will most likely be a
lot of people all around.
There is a car park which can get pretty busy, so
I hope to get there at 9:30 am which is when
they open.
There my be some health and safety risks such
as, falling over something or falling off
something whilst trying to get a good photo. I’m
pretty sure that I won’t run into these problems
though.
I would be taking photographs for the style:
Spring.
5. Location Recce
Wistow Lordship
I won’t need to add any lighting when taking
photographs around the lordship. I may need
to take and use a torch after taking the photographs
though.
I would be doing the shooting at the outskirts of the
village, and further down that road.
I would mostly doing sunset photography. This
would be by taking photographs of trees with the
sunsetting behind them and peeking over the tall
grass pointing towards the sunset.
I will be taking photographs for the styles: Spring
and Sunset/Sunrise.
6. Location Recce
Cawood
Backroads
I won’t need to add any lighting when taking
photographs at the Cawood backroads. I may
need to take and use a torch after taking the
photographs though.
I would be doing the shooting at the outskirts
of the village, and further down that road.
I would be doing a mix of sunset photography
and spring photography. This would be by
taking photographs of trees with the
sunsetting behind them, and the beautiful
blooming blossoms of spring.
I will be taking photographs for the styles:
Spring and Sunset/Sunrise.
7. Location Recce
My House +
Back Garden
I may need to add some lighting when taking
photographs around my house. I can do this by
turning on a torch, ceiling light, or lamp.
I would be doing the shooting on a day when
there is no one else in the house. This is so that
I don’t get in anyone's way, and they do not get
in mine.
I would be taking photographs for the styles:
Abstract and Random.
8. Location Recce
My Village
I may need to add some lighting
when taking photographs around
my village. I can do this by taking
and using a torch.
I would be doing the shooting
around the village and just
outside of it.
I would mostly be doing spring
photography. This would be by
taking photographs of trees,
plants, flowers blooming.
I may also be taking photographs
around the village for the styles:
Abstract and Random.
9. Location Recce
The Beach
I won’t need to add any lighting when
taking photographs at the beach. I may
need to take a torch, or source of light, if
I was to take photographs of
Scarborough or Boggle Hole at night. I
would be doing the shooting down on
the beach, near the cliffs, and on a few
roads throughout the town.
I would be doing a mix of sunset,
abstract, and random photography. I may
even get to do some spring photography.
I would be taking photographs of the sun
setting over the town or rising over the
flat ocean, and the different shaped
rocks, fossils, and shells.
10. Spring Settings – Nikon D5100
• Aperture Priority mode (A on the mode dial)
• Aperture set to f/16
• ISO set to 100
• Image Quality set to NEF (RAW)
• Focus Mode set to Auto-Area A
• Metering set to Matrix
• Release Mode set to Self-timer
• Focal Length (zoom) se to 18mm
• Vibration Reduction turned OFF
• A/M switch set to A
https://www.cameratips.com/d5100/landscape-settings-tips-tricks
12. Sunrise Settings – Nikon D5100
• 30 minute before Sunrise – ISO 400,Shutter Speed 10 – 20 seconds (for long
exposures) or 1/400sec – 1/200sec if you’re after a quick shot, Aperture f/2.8, white
balance Shaded or Cloudy.
• Sunrise – ISO 100, Shutter Speed ½. 5 secs depending on the outcome you’re looking
for, Aperture f/11 for clarity or f/2.8, if you’re shooting details and want the
beautiful bokeh blur in the light.
• *The above settings are to be used as a starting point only.
• Sunrise photography tip – If you’re looking to keep the entire scene in focus, then
find the sweet spot on your lens, usually around f/6 – f/10. I love shooting with f/2.8
for a little blur but if clarity from front to back and side to side is what you’re after,
change your aperture around until you find the sharpness you’re looking for.

13. Abstract Settings – Nikon D5100
I found it easier to look at a rough recommended guide for the
settings, and then to play around that area with different Shutter
Speeds / ISO / Aperture.

14. Astro Settings – Nikon D5100
• Use manual or bulb mode
• Use a “fast” aperture of f/2.8 – f/4
• Set your white balance setting to daylight or auto
• Set your exposure length to 15 – 30 seconds
• Shoot in RAW image format
• Use Manual focus
• Use an ISO of 400 – 1600 (or more)
• Use the 10 seconds delay drive mode

15. Equipment & Software
I wouldn’t need to borrow any equipment from college. I have a DSLR at
home, a tripod, and various lenses.
Camera – Nikon D5100
Lenses – 18 - 55mm, 70 - 300mm.
Battery for camera & spare battery.
32GB SD card.
I would need to use editing software at college, but I don’t think that the
editing process will take that long. I experimented using Adobe Lightroom,
and it is a very easy piece of software to use. Photoshop is also a very good
piece of software to use to edit the photos. You can also use Photoshop to
create the digital pages for the magazine.
Bike, car for transport. I walked around a lot as well.
16. Facilities
I will need to use college facilities when I am editing my photographs.
I will need to use a computer set-up for when I am creating the digital
magazine. I am planning on using Adobe Lightroom to edit my
photographs.
I may also need to use something in the college for when I create the
reviews for the cameras – Scott talked to me about using a black box,
to photoshoot display my camera. I am not sure if I want to follow
through with this idea, because I am a bit tight on time and I think
that it would be a better idea to just add images of the recommended
cameras onto my reviews page.
17. Personnel
I don’t need anyone to specifically be part of my project. For the abstract and
random styles of photography I may need to use people in a few photos.
I will need some assistance from my parents for transport to certain places, but
we’d most likely be going out for the day anyway. My mum has booked a few days
off work, I would like to use these days to go out and take photos for the FMP.
I am going to be going to the beach with my dad. Scarborough or Boggle Hole. I will
be taking photographs of the beach, sun, rocks, fossils, and shells.
All of the places that I want to take the photographs at, cost nothing to be there.
There may however be the possibility that the car park at Fairburn Ings, is full.
18. Props/Costume/etc
I will need to gather props for the abstract, and random
photographs. This would be because the photos rely on
there being an object/s as the main focus.
I may need to invest a small amount of money into the
production of the FMP. This would be to provide props for
photographs.
For example, this could be a coffee with a fancy decoration
on the top, other cameras / lenses, clothing items / shoes, or
visually pleasing vases / bowls / plates.
I will be taking photographs of plants and flowers throughout
the village. These could be classed as a prop.
20. Presenting
Camera Settings
This is how I would be presenting
the camera settings, that I used for
each photograph:
I have edited the photograph
slightly. I have made it look
more vibrant but kept it
looking relatively realistic.
21. Object / Shot Ideas for Abstract Photography
• Cactus – frontwards shot, on windowsill.
• Something to do with cutlery – try altering lighting when shooting.
• Something to do with visually pleasing bowls / plates - forwards /
above shot.
• Barren trees – looking upwards shot.
• Looking through blinds, to see a nice sunset shot.
• Stacking rocks at the beach.
• Piecing together rocks to make a bigger shape or picture.
• Various shells.
22. Object / Shot Ideas for Spring Photography
• Blossom.
• Trees.
• Wild animals.
• Plants, and interesting looking leaves.
• Sunshine, blue skies, vibrant coloured grass and flowers.
23. Object / Shot Ideas for Astro Photography
• Whilst using bulb mode, use the long exposure remote for a
few minutes – to see the movement of the stars.
• Get shots with trees or buildings at the bottom of the shot, to
show the height of the shot, and to make it that bit more
interesting.
• Get in focus and out of focus shots, with the 18 – 55mm lens
and the 70 – 300mm.
• Try to include star constellations.
24. Objects / Shot Ideas for Sunset Photography
• Get shots with pylon towers in the foreground – silhouettes.
• Get shots with trees, and flower fields in the shot.
• Get a variety of different shots in different locations and with
different focus points in the view.
• Possibly try blurring the focus, for effect.
25. Storyboarding
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
– http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
– http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or copy to
insert it onto your slides

benches around the nature park.
21/04/22 Runswick Bay & Sandsend N/A Taking photographs. Of shells, rocks, boats, waves etc...
37. Clearance and Permissions
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your
video must have a completed form
Public Domain Photography:
Taking photographs from walking on the footpath, will not
include houses or information about location.
38. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided?
Fall over or off something when taking a photograph. Make sure to be aware of my surroundings.
Could get into an accident on the way to the place of interest. Drive safely and cautiously.
Could slip on wet mud / grass / ground. Watch where I am stepping / walking - look ahead.
Could trip on a root or rock when taking photos or walking. Look where I am stepping / walking.
39. Contingency Plan
What could go wrong. What do to make sure that this doesn’t
happen.
What I can do instead.
Imperfect weather. It could change to
being unsuitable for taking photographs.
I need to regularly check the weather app,
and keep updating my schedule.
I could plan to go somewhere else,
where the weather conditions are a lot
more promising.
Family members unavailable for transport. Create a separate schedule / plan with my
parents, so that we can follow it and make
sure that we are all available.
Plan to go another day, and spend that
day constructively by doing some work
that will help me out with the FMP.
The camera’s batteries may both be out of
charge.
Ensure that they are charged by putting
them to charge frequently.
Use my phone instead, or quickly charge
a battery up.
Photos could be too dark / light. Wrong
shutter speed / aperture / ISO.
Check all of the settings thoroughly
before shooting the pictures.
Either scrap the photos, try to edit them
in Adobe Lightroom, or go back another
time to try to get them right.
Could have the wrong props, or they may
not give the effect that I thought they
would have.
Don’t get too many props, keep it simple
and try to choose the best props.
Possibly take some more photos with
different / more props.
I plan on taking some pictures of animals
at Fairburn Ings.
The animals might move and ruin the
shot.
Try to take the pictures quicker, or choose
to take photographs of animals that aren’t
going to move as much.
Take some more pictures of the same
animal or other animals to guarantee at
least one good shot of each animal.
Editor's Notes
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this?
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other specialist facilities…?
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
