Done by group: Alwakra_Chemistry Stars
School Name: Al Wakrah School for girls
Concrete module: This module enables the students to study concrete properties in general through experiments done by the students. Finally they use what they learn to design their own product.
As the population is growing in Qatar, a lot of buildings are rising. Also, Qatari Engineers are performing high quality of life, accordingly the students thought of an idea that can help and develop the future of their country.
The purpose of their idea is to enhance the concrete used in buildings by adding silica fume to avoid the consequences of future adverse events like earthquakes.

3. Introduction
Nowadays concrete is being used worldwide in building towers, bridges,
stadiums, etc. And concrete is a composite of a mixture of cement,
granular material, water, sand.
4. Activity 1 : Hunting for objects made of Concrete
• Objective: To search for materials made of concrete in real life .
• Procedure : we discussed about concrete and how it’s used, made and
apparently in every building concrete is used.
• Result: Concrete is cheap, strong and durable so it’s
used in buildings and as infrastructure material.
• Conclusion: Concrete is a material composed of
granular material, it contains a lot of tiny particles &
when it dries, it forms a hard matrix of material that
fills the space among the aggregate particles and
glues them together.
5. Activity 2 : Comparing different kinds of
cement
• Objective: To differentiate between cement mixture additives for example:
Sample A Cement with water only.
Sample B Cement with water & Salt.
Sample C Cement with water & Sugar.

Time of hardening
Sample A Cement with water only was normal not too slow or too fast.
Sample B Cement with water & Salt was the fastest to harden.
Sample C Cement with water & Sugar was the slowest to harden.
8. Activity 3 part A : Comparing different
kinds of concrete formulations.
• Objective: To compare the densities of different formulations.
• Result: 50:50 had the lowest density
and was the best.
70:30 had the highest density.
9. Activity 3 part B : Comparing
different kinds of concrete
formulations• Objective: To make concrete molds and compare the different
formulations.

11. Result
We figured out that sample E without the reinforcement
was harder than sample D, and it was more dense and
stronger.
12. • Objective: to break the concrete bricks to check which one is
the hardest.
• Result: the brick which took much longer time to break was
the reinforced brick!
Activity 3 part C : Comparing different kinds of concrete
formulations - breaking the Concrete
Sample D when we broke it
Sample E with Reinforcement when we tested it

concrete molds
13. Design Project: Testing the strength
of concrete.
• Objective : to make concrete templates with reinforced material.
• Procedure : we made sample E and we added reinforcement.
• Result : the reinforcement made the concrete much harder to
break, that’s why they use reinforced concrete in buildings.
Reinforcement
14. Product Idea
Avoiding major adverse events!
• Our project has got a great idea, which is to avoid future events like ground
shaking, make the concrete much stronger and improve its properties, it
would help Qatar’s 2030 vision.
• We searched for the best material to be added on concrete, containing
admixtures of Silica Fume. It is primarily for the purpose of enhancing and
improving the concrete mixture.
The concrete will be reinforced & the reinforcement will be Steel mixed with
Carbon.
• Our main aim is to try our best to help our
Country Qatar and set targets to build a
new advanced generation.
15. Avoiding Major Adverse Events
Silica fume is available in wet & dry form, it
produces consistent & high-quality concrete.
According to Laboratory tests in the U.S have shown
that the addition of silica fume and a high-range water
reducing admixture (HRWRA) to a concrete mixture
will greatly increase compressive strength.
Silica Fume Properties
Increases abrasion-erosion resistance (Holland 1983).
As a result, concretes containing silica fume were used
by the US Engineers in Los Angeles, to repair
abrasionerosion.
16. Properties
Reinforcement corrosion is vastly
reduced due to improved
permeability, increased resistivity
and improved tensile strength.
Silica fume improves the properties of
fresh, hardened concrete & more
cohesive.
Silica fume reduces segregation and bleeding &
improves durability, enhances constructability,
mechanical properties & reduces permeability.
Silica Fume
& Concrete
17. When we firstly started attending Al-Bairaq workshop, we learnt a lot
about everything related to concrete and how it’s used, we faced
some problems having our work done at the stated time but we did
our best as a team. We didn’t lose the hope in searching and finding
the wanted information about Silica Fume because we knew we
could achieve our goals. Overall Al-Bairaq workshops have helped
us to get through our journey of experimenting concrete and getting
more knowledge, Our major idea is about developing Qatar .
.
Avoiding a major adverse event!
18. Avoiding a major adverse event!
Our project idea can be used in much several ways in buildings to avoid or
even prevent a natural adverse event! It helps the country’s future
development structure.
Silica Fume is used slightly in some developed European countries, but we developed it
in the best way to be used in Qatar in specific ways.
Silica Fume is suitable for Qatar’s moisture weather
19. • We recommend that our project can be used not just
in Qatar but even in much more countries.
Recommendations
20. Participating in Al-Bairaq project was extremely exciting & full of
challenges that helped us to improve our self-confidence. &
finally we don’t really know how to thank our Al-Bairaq team
and the sponsors.
We’re aiming to win this challenging competition & plus we’ve
done many researches to get much more experience and wanting
this idea to be used soon in Qatar!

21. Acknowledgment
Finally we Thank all people who encouraged and supported us
A huge thanks goes to our supportive sponsors who gave us the
appreciated opportunity to participate in this program, it helped
us so much that we earned an experience that will help us
during our educational path.
