School: Omar Bin Alkhattab Independent School for Boys
Smart Sensors: Gives knowledge about smart sensors and the PVDF films through activities, experiments and projects which depend on smart sensors.
This group has done several activities and experiments related to the Smart Sensors module and they started to think about a project to design and invent. Their ideas lead them to design Lifesaving watch (LSW) and Smart attendance counter (SAC).

• Introduction
• Activity 1: evading motion detection
• Activity 2:Taking a tour of some sensors
• Activity 3:Making a microphone
• Activity 4: exploring the piezo effect: the inside
story
• Activity 5: measuring piezoelectric or
pyroelectric response
• Design Project : Coin counter
• Product Idea: Lifesaving watch (LSW) and
Smart attendance counter (SAC)
3. ACTIVITY 1:EVADING MOTION DETECTION
Motion detectors are devices that respond to changes in the
electromagnetic sound radiation. We used 2 devices (Mini Alert which
respond to infra-red and Ultrasonic from Vernier which uses
ultrasound for motion detection).
Objective: We will try to evade being detected by a motion sensor
which is placed in the classroom
Conclusion: we can evade being detected by the sensor if we knew the
type of the sensor used in the class room which was a motion type
sensor and we evaded it by putting any non living object in front of us.
For the ultrasonic, we stand away of its field.
4. ACTIVITY 2:TAKING A TOUR OF SOME SENSORS
o There are many types of sensors around us like motion
type sensors
Objective: to learn about more types of sensors
Conclusion: we learned there are many type of sensors like
sound sensors and light & heat, sensors and pressure
sensors
5. ACTIVITY 3:MAKING A MICROPHONE
We have all seen entertainers use microphones to
amplify their voices.
Objective: we tried to make a microphone by using
a PVDF and a speakers and wire cables
Conclusion: our trial was successful and the
microphone did work.
6. ACTIVITY 4: EXPLORING THE PIEZO EFFECT: THE
INSIDE STORY
The dipolar arrangement of a piezoelectric material
changes when the material is bent and this change
causes the material to generate voltage.
Aim: To learn about inside story of the piezo effect
Conclusion: we learned how to build polymers and
that’s by connecting a chain of monomers which is
similar to PVDF.
7. ACTIVITY 5 : MEASURING PIEZO-
ELECTRIC OR PYRO-ELECTRIC
RESPONSE
Objective: To compare the mechanical stress and
temperature changes applied to PVDF film with the
voltage produced and by using lab pro interface.
Conclusion: The mechanical and heat changes
induce voltage production which is not stable and
correlates with the strength of the stimuli.

8. PROJECT DESIGN : DESIGNING A COIN COUNTER
OBJECTIVE;:TO CREATE A COIN SENSOR THAT CAN IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF COINS
USING THEIR WEIGHTS.
CONCLUSION: THE VOLTAGE RESULTING FROM THE PIEZO-ELECTRIC EFFECT OF COINS
POSITIVELY CORRELATES WITH THEIR WEIGHTS.

9. THE LIFE SAVING WATCH:PRODUCT IDEA
We thought of this project to decrease the potential accidents in
dangerous jobs and we were trying to achieve being
acknowledged by large companies like RasGas.
What we did is special because I think it was never done before
in Qatar and its unique and it should be promising
Our main idea of the project is to use normal or smart watches
however we plant a specific unique sensor in each watch with a
unique serial number for each watch.
We wanted each watch to have a unique serial number so that
the computer data recognize each watch and its owners
information and to be able to locate him and to plant another
sensor so that it can measure it owners heartbeat so that if his
owners heart rate is abnormal, we can detect the stress and
danger he could be in .
10. THE USES OF OUR PROJECT
There are many uses of our project and we thought that companies like rasgas
would be pleased about this because if the hardware workers in these
companies use this watch they will be able to locate there workers and they will
be able to know who entered the engine room and they will be able to predict the
accidents by knowing the hertbeat of their workers in the engine room and so
the accident percentage will be decreased dramaticaly
We recommend this project for large companies that have high
accidents percentage especially for rasgas and for large petrol stations..
11. PRODUCT 2:THE SMART ATTENDANCE COUNTER
We thought of this project to help schools or universities to
check on the students
We used the PVDF Piezo-electric property to design an
Attendance Counter machine to facilitate registration of
students, thus saving the lesson time.
In this idea we used one of the PVDF properties and we
gave each student a coin with specific weight which the
PVDF recognizes and it’s designed as a box as shown in the
picture here .
