3. TABLE OF CONTENT
• What is glucose?
• Definition of glucose.
• Biological importance of glucose.
4. WHAT IS GLUCOSE?
• Glucose is come from the food we eat or the body can make it from other substances.
• Glucose is the small simplest sugar that serve as a primary fuel for energy
production , especially for the brain, muscles and other body organs and tissues.
• Glucose also serve as a building block for larger structure molecules of the body such
as glycolipids or glycoproteins.
• GLYCOPROTEINS :consists of backbone + simple sugar(glucose)
• GLYCOLIPIDS: consist of fat and sugar building blocks
5. DEFINITION OF GLUCOSE
• Main source of energy for body cells.(glycolysis)
• Main type of sugar in blood.(glucose=dextrose)
• Monosaccharides.(1 or 3 dietary monosaccharides)
• Carried through cell through blood stream.
6. BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF GLUCOSE
1)Glucose is one of the product of photosynthesis in plants and other photosynthetic
pigment in other organisms. In plants glucose molecule is stored as repeating unit of
sugar.(i.e. .starch). It is also an important component of Amylopectin and Cellulose . Thus
it occur abundantly in plant juices and fruits and many other plant organs.
2)Glucose also serve as metabolic intermediate of cellular respiration in fermentation. In
Animals it circulates in blood as referred as blood sugar .glucose is transported to various
plant body.
IN LIVER AND MUSCLE CELLS: Excess glucose is stored as glycogen.
IN BRAIN: It take glucose it prefer glucose on other sources of energy . without the
adequate amount of glucose the brain cannot function properly and process such as
decision makng and self control impaired.
7. • 4)to much glucose cause serious diseases such as diabetes mellitus and hypoglycemia or
obesity.
• 5)glucose is also an constituent of several biological compounds such as the structural
carbohydrates: cellulose and chitin. It is also a vital component of important
disaccharides: lactose(milk sugar) and maltose(melt sugar) or sucrose (table sugar).
• 6)Glucose can be broken down further and convert into lipids.it also a precursor for the
synthesis of aerobic acid.
• 7)It also use as via pentose phosphate pathway to provide pentose's for use in the
biological synthesis of DNA OR RNA.
