2. WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL
SUSTAINABLITY?
• sustainability is the endurance of systems and processes
• Environmental sustainability is the rates of
– renewable resource harvest,
– pollution creation,
– and non-renewable resource depletion
• that can be continued indefinitely. If they cannot be
continued indefinitely then they are not sustainable
• Several hotels around the world have implemented
creative cost saving initiatives to reduce their impact on the
environment.
4. Energy
Use Renewable energy, Maintain energy efficiency
installing energy-efficient technologies such as
appliances, lighting and heating/cooling systems
installed tinted windows and digital thermostats in
guest rooms to reduce the consumption of energy
For Eg: The Willard Intercontinental located in
Washington D.C. is now running on 100% wind energy
7. ENERGY MANAGEMENT
• Hotel designed in a way that does not require air-
conditioning units in the rooms and public area.
Eg: Tenorio Lodge - Costa Rica
• Hot water is produced with solar heated water with
electricity back up.
• Guests and employees are constantly reminded to
save energy, by switching off the light when necessary
for example.
– 90% of compact fluorescent bulb and replaced now by
LEDs.
– Use of laundry dryer minimized, bio-climatic room built to
dry clothes naturally.
8. Water
• Several hotels have implemented water saving
initiatives.
• Sewage treatment plant
• Grey water is being cleaned and reused through
biofilters
• Water free urinal
• Installation water softener for laundry
• Ice machine and freezer unit discharge water and
this water used to cool the compressor, heat
energy from the unit used to heat domestic hot
water
• Water recycling plant. Eg: Otani Hotel in Jappan
10. Waste
To make sustainable environment in hotel by
reducing the amount of waste produce
In Hotel solid waste, 46% is from food waste that
can be used as organic fertilizer
Electronic waste and other waste creatively used
other part of building
Eg: Willard InterContinental Hotel Washington
D.C., 2009
11. WASTE MANAGEMENT
• Three “R’s” (Reducing, Reusing and Recycling) solid
waste program is respected.
• Garbage is carefully sorted, in order to recyclable
materials such as cans, plastic bottles, tins, paper, etc.
• To avoid the waste, most of the food is bought in bulk
and reusable packaging when available (beer, sodas,
etc.).
• Encourage staff and guests not to use disposable
plastics.
• More than 50% of the waste goes to the compost, to
be used then as nutrients for plants, avoiding the use
of any chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides.
12. Waste Reduction
• Decreasing the amount of waste generated
and disposed using strategies such as
– waste prevention,
– reuse,
– recycling,
• using recycled products
• composting,
• or energy recovery
14. Nature
• Natural resource conservation & management,
• inspires and educates visitors by showcasing
flora, fauna and natural resources in motivational
surroundings that promote environmentally
friendly techniques.
• The wildflowers attract bugs, birds and
butterflies, which adds to the natural beauty of
the park, and contributes to the preservation of
the county’s natural areas.
• protect natural resources and provide
recreational amenities
15. AGRICULTURE & CATERING

mixture of plants.
• An edible hill is being planting right in front of
the kitchen to offer a larger variety of fruit
trees, various wild native greens, native
tubers full of protein and minerals and
ornamentals that frame the rejuvenated
landscape.
16. CONSTRUCTION
• Green building practices are increasingly being
used in new and retrofitted developments,
mainly for energy and water efficiency and to
reduce hazardous waste.
18. 1. Misool Eco Resort (Raja Ampat,
Indonesia)
• sits within the 46,000km² Raja Ampat Shark
and Manta Sanctuary, and contributes to 9
community and conservation projects in the
region.

• The treehouses of Sweden’s Treehotel can be
found in the middle of the forest, with water-
efficient sinks, combustion toilets, and low-
energy LED lighting, the Treehotel is more
