DIGITAL MEDIA
PRODUCTION
Mast head – the title of the magazine is
covered by the heads of the dominate
image.
The skyline has other movie titles which
are covered in this magazine. This may
persuade people to buy which is the
purpose
Main sell line is in bold red over the dominate
image. Also “Terminator” Is the name of a
blockbuster franchise which will attract a
target audience.
The image is a mid shot and both models are looking to the
camera and therefore the audience. This is direct mode of
address; it'll make the audience engaged and might persuade
them to buy. In addition; they are framed at the center which
is a convention of all magazine media as it will also make the
reader more engaged. They are in high key lighting to show
both of these recognizable people; but both are lit from the
side which may hint their characters are hiding something
from the audience which will engage the audience and make
them want to read and find out
Hermeneutic code is used as the models are shown through
the mise en scene to be ready for action; this makes the
audience wonder why that is and may persuade them to buy.
Also the dominate image covers the tag line which shows
that it’s the main focus of this magazine.
Also the models are both dressed in military outfits and have
guns (mise en scene) which speaks to the target audience.
Sub sell line; Its listing other movies covered
by this magazine. This will attract movie fans
which is the target audience.
! – this punctuation creates emergency
and importance to engage the audience
The use of the quote is none direct mode of
address. Also since its said byArnold
Schwarzenegger (in red to highlight the name)
it follows the two step model. Also the fount of
this (and the other quote) is different to give
them personality as they are quotes.
Every other film is in bold to catch the eye of
the audience amidst everything elseName of celebrity screenwriter in red to
highlight his importance to the reader as he’s
not as well know as the other celebrities on
the magazine
The color scheme is meant to
highlight different texts in order of
importance to the reader. Red is the
most important ( celebrity names,
movie titles, sell lines). Black is the
second as its used for tag lines and
one movie title in the skyline.
White is used for the quote to
make it stand out from the dark
background.
Bar code at the front of the magazine.
Ellipsis used to create intrigue
Print movie magazine
Target audience, genre and purpose
This magazine has will have a primarily male audience. I believe this as the mise en scene shows militaristic
props/costume. This is a convention of action movies; the audience of which is primarily is men. However the
woman on the front (Linda Hamilton) is a strong female lead for the action genre so her appearance in the
film and magazine will attract a female audience too. So id say the primary audience is male 15+ and the
secondary audience will be female 15+. Furthermore I believe the audience would be of all social grades but
primary E to C2. In regards to psychographics; I believe they could be all but primarily strugglers and
explorers, I believe this as action movies may appeal to people who are more willing to accept the none
realistic story. They are more of a laid back, passive audience.
You can tell this is a movie magazine as it has the title of a huge blockbuster main and center. Also both
models are big movie stars; there's also a list of new upcoming movies and the skyline shows the big
upcoming blockbusters.
The purpose of this magazine is to entertain through the articles inside; also to sell and make profits. It does
this buy appealing to the movie genre of magazine and that target audience
Layout
The layout of the magazine has the two dominate models overlapping the mast head. This is because total film
magazine is well known, and you can still make out what magazine it is. The models over lapped by the main sell
line. This is to communicate to the audience the subject of the magazine. All other text surrounds the two models
allowing them to be front and center.
Codes and Conventions
This magazine follows a lot of codes and conventions of traditional magazines like having: masthead, main
and sub sell lines, skylines, quotes, direct mode of address, none direct mode of address etc. These codes
and conventions show the audience that it’s a traditional magazine. This magazine uses these conventions
to show its of the movie genre as it uses well known movie starts for direct mode of address and it also uses
quotes from these celebrity's. This is the two step model and persuades people to buy.
Conclusion
I believe the layout, codes and conventions are used effectively to show the reader the genre of magazine
and to persuade the audience to buy. It for fills its purpose ass anyone in the target audience would be
persuaded to buy due to the magazines use of codes and conventions.
Layout
The main body of text has the title of Star wars (in bold) then the tag line of
movie. This helps the reader navigate the magazine as they know what the main
body of text is about. The text is formatted in columns with gutters between to
keep it organized. Page numbers on the side to help with navigation; there
would be a contents page at the front or the back to help too. Also this magazine
has color around the number; each color is linked to a section of magazine. This
is a convention in print magazine as with digital you don’t need the numbers to
be on the page. In the right hand corner there is a running head; this makes it
easier to navigate because there is multiple sections to this magazine. However
there is a secondary running head saying ”star wars” on the opposite side to the
star wars article. They do this through the magazine. They have the primary
running head which is winter preview then a secondary running head with the
double page spreads main article as the name; example star wars for the star
wars page.
At the end of of the text there are initials in red, these are the writers of the
article. This challenges conventions as there isn't a true byline. Also this is
assuming the reader know who JW is.
Also there is three hot ticket ads (one for each movie) and the ticket is a graphic
and is meant to resemble a stereotypical ticket.
Image
The dominate image is the poster of the movie; it has the two main characters in
a conflict. This shows the audience that the movie will have their fight. Also there
is faint eyes above showing that there is a larger threat in the background. This
creates intrigue for the reader. The main image spreads across the double page
spread and acts as a book end to the star wars information. The title (birds of
prey) is in red accompanied by a an sub image of Margot Robbie who is the lead.
She is dressed in her very popular Harley Quinn costume.
There is a joke in white in the dominate image; this shows the audience that the
article will have a sense of humor.
Language
The headline of the article is in bold (star wars) and the sub headline
is not in bold. This attracts your eye. There is a lot of text which
shows it’s for a older audience. Key information (names, titles) is
colored in red to show they have significance.
The main body doesn't have a drop cap; this challenges the
conventions of a double page spread. The main body of the text has
a kicker; a short interdiction to the main article showing: theme, key
information (dates, names). The text uses a lot of quotes, this is
using celebrity's as leaders in the two step model
Codes and conventions of a double page spread
and how it for fills its purpose
This magazine uses multiple codes and conventions of a
double page spread like: dominate and sub images, head
line, running heads, kickers. It also challenges some
conventions like that there is no drop cap.
The magazine for fills its purpose as it talks about upcoming
films with key information (dates) in a entertaining way.
Digital movie magazine
The model is in a mid shot and she is
looking towards the camera. This is direct
mode of address. The model also is
overlapping both the mast head and tag
line showing she is the most dominate on
the screen; she is the dominate image.
She is framed to the center which is a
convention of magazines. It also helps
with direct mode of address. She has eye
line with the audience which also shows
direct mode of address.
This is clearly an image which was
captured in a studio. The lighting is high
key as you can see her face clearly,
although the bottom of the image is
darker
None direct mode of address and the two
step model used as it’s a quote from the star
of the movie talking about the movie and
the star would be a leader and people will be
interested in the magazine just for her
options
Skyline states boldly what the magazines
main subject is.
Main sell line; it’s a bold white which
differentiates it from the darker background.
The magazines main images is surrounded by
a black boarder; this forces the audiences
perspective to the center of the image.
However the light saber comes out which
could be shown as direct mode of address as it
almost breaks the forth wall.
Obeying the rule of thirds as her hand is in the
corner and her eyes are in the top line; this
means she is looking directly into the camera.
The colors are colors which sand out
from each other; red and white are
used for text as it stands out from the
black background.
! Punctuation creates intrigue
Target audience, genre and purpose
The target audience will be quite a large range; there is a female on the front of the magazine so it
will appeal to a female audience. However star wars is a blockbuster franchise and will also appeal
to a male audience. I would say the primary audience is male 14+ and the secondary audience is
female 14+. I also believe the social grade for the audience would be E to C1 as star wars is a very
popular blockbuster. Furthermore I believe the psychographics would be the same as my print
magazine (strugglers and explorers) as they are more inclined to watch blockbuster movies. The
purpose of the magazine is to entertain the audience and inform them with information about up
coming movies.
Layout
The layout of the magazine is very conventual; she is framed in the center and she overlaps the
masthead and tagline. This is to show she is most important as she is the dominate image; also
framing her in the center creates direct mode of address.
The main sell line is in the bottom corner in big and bold letters whilst the subline is under the main
sell line in a smaller text. More information on the bottom of the magazine with more information
about what's in the magazine. This may persuade people to buy the magazine.
Codes and Conventions
This magazine follows a lot of magazine codes and conventions: masthead, tagline, main sell line,
dominate image, quotes, skyline, direct mode of address, none direct mode of address etc.The
magazine also has codes and conventions which relate to the movie genre of magazines: movie
star, movie props (mise en scene). This makes it clear the magazine is a one which centers around
movies.
Conclusion
This magazine cover is very effective as it shows what genre it is effectively through its use of
codes and conventions.
Layout
The main body of text starts with a large drop cap; the drop cap also covers
the main image partially. Its in bold red which draws attention to the main
body of text. This will draw the readers attention to show the start of the
article. Some of the text wraps around the image of Luke. The text is small
sand compact to columns to keep it organized; also the text is surrounded by
sub images and a pull quote. There are gutters in-between the columns to
keep them in organized rows. There is a running head with “the last Jedi” to
help with reader navigation; also page numbers on the side help.
There is a pull quote in big text in-between the paragraphs which people will
read first and it'll intrigue people to read the article.
The layout goes against conventions as there is no headline to show the start
of the magazine.
Images
There are a lot of images; one dominate image which crosses the spread
and multiple sub images which separate the text. Movie images show the
genre of magazine. In the image of Luke his eyes are pointing towards the
text; this could be seen as none direct mode of address and also the two
step model is it creates intrigue in the reader to see what he does and will
get them to read.
The dominate image is a still from the movie; it shows the lead character
outside in the light and the returning character in the dark. This creates
intrigue in the reader. Also there is a small caption which gives context to
the scene this is from.
Text
There is no main headline; this challenges conventions,
also there is no kicker which is also challenging the
codes and conventions.
There is a lot of text which shows its for an older target
audience; the text is small so that it can be tight and
compact in the layout of the magazine. The color red is
used for names and the drop cap to grab the readers
attention. This is following the conventions of a double
page spread. The text is factual but also uses quotes
from celebrity's following the two step model.
Codes and convention of the double
page spread and how it for fills its
purpose
The codes and conventions of the magazine double
page spread this magazine follows are: dominate
and sub images, text wrapping, columns, running
head, page numbers, gutters etc. The magazine
shows its of the movie genre us that that the
images are from a big blockbuster.
It for fills its purpose by showing a review of the
movie in a entertaing way
Print vs digital and technical considerations for both and pros and cons
Digital
This is a pro and technical consideration; when you distribute digitally you could create hyperlinks to videos and social media platforms. This is great as people may enjoy your
magazine then want to spread the magazine to their friends which will increase your profits and also create personal relationships and create social interaction. Also another
advantage of digital is that marketing ( ads) are cheaper; you can use pop up ads which allows your magazine to have more images, more text, even more ads.
However digital distribution has its cons too. When you can deliver your magazine digitally there is obviously no need for transport which could lead to job loss. Also when you send it
digitally it means you need a connection to access it unless you download it.
One technical consideration for digital is how people will view your magazine; if people are viewing it on their mobile devices they may have to zoom and scroll a lot which may
annoy the costumer. Also some devices/apps may not support the magazine properly.
Also when you create your digital magazine you need to be aware that retailers like amazon and Barns and Nobel require the magazine to work on their formatting software; this
means when you transfer your magazine over you may loose: articles, images, videos, hyperlinks etc. Meaning your magazine wouldn’t be how the publisher intended.
Print
Print is also great too; a lot of people love physical copies as they can collect them. Also they are more traditional which will invite aspirers as they typically go against the norms.
Although print used to be the norm, digital magazines are more popular currently. In addition they seek materialistic things, so they would prefer a physical copy. Further more
they will invite the resigned as they prefer the traditional way so they would be more interested in the print rather to the new digital. In addition since its physical there is no pop
up ads and you don’t need a internet connection.
For print cons; print distribution has a carbon foot print which is a big negative; they are sold in: shops, supermarkets etc. This may mean some people wont buy them as they will
have to travel to get them so they may just buy it digitally (which you can with total films). However one good thing about print distribution is that it gives more jobs for people in
transport.
For technical considerations for print you’ve got to think about page size (A5,A4) and also the size of your font to make sure the whole article will fit on your page size. Also you’ve
got to make sure all images that have been in Photoshop use RGB color mode so that the color is visible across different media platforms. Further more you’ve got to make sure
you use a bleed line to make sure when you print the magazine you have not lost parts of images/articles.
The magazine I have chosen is “total film” and they have both a digital and print version. There and both pros and cons to print and digital magazines.
Conclusion
I believe having both options is the best way of distribution. However I believe that print is better for this audience as the images are extremely important to the movie genre of
magazines; and a physically copy is the best way to view them rather than a screen.

Digital media production

  • 2. Mast head – the title of the magazine is covered by the heads of the dominate image. The skyline has other movie titles which are covered in this magazine. This may persuade people to buy which is the purpose Main sell line is in bold red over the dominate image. Also “Terminator” Is the name of a blockbuster franchise which will attract a target audience. The image is a mid shot and both models are looking to the camera and therefore the audience. This is direct mode of address; it'll make the audience engaged and might persuade them to buy. In addition; they are framed at the center which is a convention of all magazine media as it will also make the reader more engaged. They are in high key lighting to show both of these recognizable people; but both are lit from the side which may hint their characters are hiding something from the audience which will engage the audience and make them want to read and find out Hermeneutic code is used as the models are shown through the mise en scene to be ready for action; this makes the audience wonder why that is and may persuade them to buy. Also the dominate image covers the tag line which shows that it’s the main focus of this magazine. Also the models are both dressed in military outfits and have guns (mise en scene) which speaks to the target audience. Sub sell line; Its listing other movies covered by this magazine. This will attract movie fans which is the target audience. ! – this punctuation creates emergency and importance to engage the audience The use of the quote is none direct mode of address. Also since its said byArnold Schwarzenegger (in red to highlight the name) it follows the two step model. Also the fount of this (and the other quote) is different to give them personality as they are quotes. Every other film is in bold to catch the eye of the audience amidst everything elseName of celebrity screenwriter in red to highlight his importance to the reader as he’s not as well know as the other celebrities on the magazine The color scheme is meant to highlight different texts in order of importance to the reader. Red is the most important ( celebrity names, movie titles, sell lines). Black is the second as its used for tag lines and one movie title in the skyline. White is used for the quote to make it stand out from the dark background. Bar code at the front of the magazine. Ellipsis used to create intrigue Print movie magazine
  • 3. Target audience, genre and purpose This magazine has will have a primarily male audience. I believe this as the mise en scene shows militaristic props/costume. This is a convention of action movies; the audience of which is primarily is men. However the woman on the front (Linda Hamilton) is a strong female lead for the action genre so her appearance in the film and magazine will attract a female audience too. So id say the primary audience is male 15+ and the secondary audience will be female 15+. Furthermore I believe the audience would be of all social grades but primary E to C2. In regards to psychographics; I believe they could be all but primarily strugglers and explorers, I believe this as action movies may appeal to people who are more willing to accept the none realistic story. They are more of a laid back, passive audience. You can tell this is a movie magazine as it has the title of a huge blockbuster main and center. Also both models are big movie stars; there's also a list of new upcoming movies and the skyline shows the big upcoming blockbusters. The purpose of this magazine is to entertain through the articles inside; also to sell and make profits. It does this buy appealing to the movie genre of magazine and that target audience Layout The layout of the magazine has the two dominate models overlapping the mast head. This is because total film magazine is well known, and you can still make out what magazine it is. The models over lapped by the main sell line. This is to communicate to the audience the subject of the magazine. All other text surrounds the two models allowing them to be front and center. Codes and Conventions This magazine follows a lot of codes and conventions of traditional magazines like having: masthead, main and sub sell lines, skylines, quotes, direct mode of address, none direct mode of address etc. These codes and conventions show the audience that it’s a traditional magazine. This magazine uses these conventions to show its of the movie genre as it uses well known movie starts for direct mode of address and it also uses quotes from these celebrity's. This is the two step model and persuades people to buy. Conclusion I believe the layout, codes and conventions are used effectively to show the reader the genre of magazine and to persuade the audience to buy. It for fills its purpose ass anyone in the target audience would be persuaded to buy due to the magazines use of codes and conventions.
  • 4. Layout The main body of text has the title of Star wars (in bold) then the tag line of movie. This helps the reader navigate the magazine as they know what the main body of text is about. The text is formatted in columns with gutters between to keep it organized. Page numbers on the side to help with navigation; there would be a contents page at the front or the back to help too. Also this magazine has color around the number; each color is linked to a section of magazine. This is a convention in print magazine as with digital you don’t need the numbers to be on the page. In the right hand corner there is a running head; this makes it easier to navigate because there is multiple sections to this magazine. However there is a secondary running head saying ”star wars” on the opposite side to the star wars article. They do this through the magazine. They have the primary running head which is winter preview then a secondary running head with the double page spreads main article as the name; example star wars for the star wars page. At the end of of the text there are initials in red, these are the writers of the article. This challenges conventions as there isn't a true byline. Also this is assuming the reader know who JW is. Also there is three hot ticket ads (one for each movie) and the ticket is a graphic and is meant to resemble a stereotypical ticket. Image The dominate image is the poster of the movie; it has the two main characters in a conflict. This shows the audience that the movie will have their fight. Also there is faint eyes above showing that there is a larger threat in the background. This creates intrigue for the reader. The main image spreads across the double page spread and acts as a book end to the star wars information. The title (birds of prey) is in red accompanied by a an sub image of Margot Robbie who is the lead. She is dressed in her very popular Harley Quinn costume. There is a joke in white in the dominate image; this shows the audience that the article will have a sense of humor. Language The headline of the article is in bold (star wars) and the sub headline is not in bold. This attracts your eye. There is a lot of text which shows it’s for a older audience. Key information (names, titles) is colored in red to show they have significance. The main body doesn't have a drop cap; this challenges the conventions of a double page spread. The main body of the text has a kicker; a short interdiction to the main article showing: theme, key information (dates, names). The text uses a lot of quotes, this is using celebrity's as leaders in the two step model Codes and conventions of a double page spread and how it for fills its purpose This magazine uses multiple codes and conventions of a double page spread like: dominate and sub images, head line, running heads, kickers. It also challenges some conventions like that there is no drop cap. The magazine for fills its purpose as it talks about upcoming films with key information (dates) in a entertaining way.
  • 5. Digital movie magazine The model is in a mid shot and she is looking towards the camera. This is direct mode of address. The model also is overlapping both the mast head and tag line showing she is the most dominate on the screen; she is the dominate image. She is framed to the center which is a convention of magazines. It also helps with direct mode of address. She has eye line with the audience which also shows direct mode of address. This is clearly an image which was captured in a studio. The lighting is high key as you can see her face clearly, although the bottom of the image is darker None direct mode of address and the two step model used as it’s a quote from the star of the movie talking about the movie and the star would be a leader and people will be interested in the magazine just for her options Skyline states boldly what the magazines main subject is. Main sell line; it’s a bold white which differentiates it from the darker background. The magazines main images is surrounded by a black boarder; this forces the audiences perspective to the center of the image. However the light saber comes out which could be shown as direct mode of address as it almost breaks the forth wall. Obeying the rule of thirds as her hand is in the corner and her eyes are in the top line; this means she is looking directly into the camera. The colors are colors which sand out from each other; red and white are used for text as it stands out from the black background. ! Punctuation creates intrigue
  • 6. Target audience, genre and purpose The target audience will be quite a large range; there is a female on the front of the magazine so it will appeal to a female audience. However star wars is a blockbuster franchise and will also appeal to a male audience. I would say the primary audience is male 14+ and the secondary audience is female 14+. I also believe the social grade for the audience would be E to C1 as star wars is a very popular blockbuster. Furthermore I believe the psychographics would be the same as my print magazine (strugglers and explorers) as they are more inclined to watch blockbuster movies. The purpose of the magazine is to entertain the audience and inform them with information about up coming movies. Layout The layout of the magazine is very conventual; she is framed in the center and she overlaps the masthead and tagline. This is to show she is most important as she is the dominate image; also framing her in the center creates direct mode of address. The main sell line is in the bottom corner in big and bold letters whilst the subline is under the main sell line in a smaller text. More information on the bottom of the magazine with more information about what's in the magazine. This may persuade people to buy the magazine. Codes and Conventions This magazine follows a lot of magazine codes and conventions: masthead, tagline, main sell line, dominate image, quotes, skyline, direct mode of address, none direct mode of address etc.The magazine also has codes and conventions which relate to the movie genre of magazines: movie star, movie props (mise en scene). This makes it clear the magazine is a one which centers around movies. Conclusion This magazine cover is very effective as it shows what genre it is effectively through its use of codes and conventions.
  • 7. Layout The main body of text starts with a large drop cap; the drop cap also covers the main image partially. Its in bold red which draws attention to the main body of text. This will draw the readers attention to show the start of the article. Some of the text wraps around the image of Luke. The text is small sand compact to columns to keep it organized; also the text is surrounded by sub images and a pull quote. There are gutters in-between the columns to keep them in organized rows. There is a running head with “the last Jedi” to help with reader navigation; also page numbers on the side help. There is a pull quote in big text in-between the paragraphs which people will read first and it'll intrigue people to read the article. The layout goes against conventions as there is no headline to show the start of the magazine. Images There are a lot of images; one dominate image which crosses the spread and multiple sub images which separate the text. Movie images show the genre of magazine. In the image of Luke his eyes are pointing towards the text; this could be seen as none direct mode of address and also the two step model is it creates intrigue in the reader to see what he does and will get them to read. The dominate image is a still from the movie; it shows the lead character outside in the light and the returning character in the dark. This creates intrigue in the reader. Also there is a small caption which gives context to the scene this is from. Text There is no main headline; this challenges conventions, also there is no kicker which is also challenging the codes and conventions. There is a lot of text which shows its for an older target audience; the text is small so that it can be tight and compact in the layout of the magazine. The color red is used for names and the drop cap to grab the readers attention. This is following the conventions of a double page spread. The text is factual but also uses quotes from celebrity's following the two step model. Codes and convention of the double page spread and how it for fills its purpose The codes and conventions of the magazine double page spread this magazine follows are: dominate and sub images, text wrapping, columns, running head, page numbers, gutters etc. The magazine shows its of the movie genre us that that the images are from a big blockbuster. It for fills its purpose by showing a review of the movie in a entertaing way
  • 8. Print vs digital and technical considerations for both and pros and cons Digital This is a pro and technical consideration; when you distribute digitally you could create hyperlinks to videos and social media platforms. This is great as people may enjoy your magazine then want to spread the magazine to their friends which will increase your profits and also create personal relationships and create social interaction. Also another advantage of digital is that marketing ( ads) are cheaper; you can use pop up ads which allows your magazine to have more images, more text, even more ads. However digital distribution has its cons too. When you can deliver your magazine digitally there is obviously no need for transport which could lead to job loss. Also when you send it digitally it means you need a connection to access it unless you download it. One technical consideration for digital is how people will view your magazine; if people are viewing it on their mobile devices they may have to zoom and scroll a lot which may annoy the costumer. Also some devices/apps may not support the magazine properly. Also when you create your digital magazine you need to be aware that retailers like amazon and Barns and Nobel require the magazine to work on their formatting software; this means when you transfer your magazine over you may loose: articles, images, videos, hyperlinks etc. Meaning your magazine wouldn’t be how the publisher intended. Print Print is also great too; a lot of people love physical copies as they can collect them. Also they are more traditional which will invite aspirers as they typically go against the norms. Although print used to be the norm, digital magazines are more popular currently. In addition they seek materialistic things, so they would prefer a physical copy. Further more they will invite the resigned as they prefer the traditional way so they would be more interested in the print rather to the new digital. In addition since its physical there is no pop up ads and you don’t need a internet connection. For print cons; print distribution has a carbon foot print which is a big negative; they are sold in: shops, supermarkets etc. This may mean some people wont buy them as they will have to travel to get them so they may just buy it digitally (which you can with total films). However one good thing about print distribution is that it gives more jobs for people in transport. For technical considerations for print you’ve got to think about page size (A5,A4) and also the size of your font to make sure the whole article will fit on your page size. Also you’ve got to make sure all images that have been in Photoshop use RGB color mode so that the color is visible across different media platforms. Further more you’ve got to make sure you use a bleed line to make sure when you print the magazine you have not lost parts of images/articles. The magazine I have chosen is “total film” and they have both a digital and print version. There and both pros and cons to print and digital magazines. Conclusion I believe having both options is the best way of distribution. However I believe that print is better for this audience as the images are extremely important to the movie genre of magazines; and a physically copy is the best way to view them rather than a screen.
