Scriptwriting evaluation
1. ScriptwritingEvaluation
In thisunitI had to investigate throughmyownresearchhow tocreate a script, proposal fora genre
filmIwas creating.Ifurtherhad to investigatethe genre conventionsandtargetaudiencestocreate
my script. When creatingmyfilmI createda surveytofindwhatwas the most populargenres. Then
whenwritingmyscriptI had a focusgroup readoverand give me feedbackforwhatI should
improve.
My Project
We were askedtocreate a short scriptin mychosengenre. We had to investigategenre conventions
and targetaudience tocreate our film.Inthe endI createda home invasionhorrorfilm.
The Proposal
In the productionof filmmakingitsimportanttohave a proposal.Brieflywhataproposal is,it’sa
detailedreportonthe film.Itwill include the plot,the genre,the targetaudience,the treatmentand
a good logline.
Firstof all,the logline isashort synopsisof the movie whichismeanttograb the attentionof the
producers. ThroughmysecondaryresearchI founda greatlogline. “Afterasimple jewelryheistgoes
terriblywrong, the survivingcriminalsbegintosuspectthatone of themisa police informant”Thisis
the logline forReservoirdogs.Itsgreatbecause itssimple andoutlinesthe plot, the lastwordsof the
logline illudetothe conflictof the filmtoowhichwill interestthe producers.
Thoughmy researchI foundone importantaspectof a script isto have characters withsetgoals,
aspirationswhichmakesthemamore fleshedout character,makingthe audience care.

My Idea
My filmisa horrorwhichretellsthe murderof ThomasHackett, itsset outas if this murderreally
happenedwhichisreminiscentof one of myinfluenceswhichisthe Texaschainsaw massacre.Texas
chainsawmade a disturbingatmosphere byframingthe eventsasareal eventwhichof course it
wasn’t.I’musingthiseffectinconjunctionwithPOV.ThisiswhatI have drawnfromanother
influence,Halloween,particularlythe firstscene withMichael Myersbeingachildandseeinghis
POV as he entersthe house andmurdershissister. Thoughmysource I foundthat one convention
was suspense by never showing the evil of the movie, so I used this in my script. Throughout
the movie you never see the stalker, you only get his POV which builds the suspense as you
never see his face. For all anyone knows the stalker might not even be human it could be a
monster or an alien, the audience arrent shown otherwise so its up to them to decide.
Through my secondary research I investigated what the ages were for the audience of
horror movies. bfi-statistical-yearbook-audiences-2018-12-17.pdf. This source showed me
that horror is amongst the most viewed genres of ages 15-24. I found this again in my
2. primary research which was a survey I made using survey monkey. Though this I found that
47 percent of people between the ages 14-24 listed horror as one of their favourite genres.

Formatting my Script
WhenI wrote my scriptI didso inmater scene script.Thisisthe formattinga writermustuse when
writinga script;if not writteninthisformatproducerswill dismissthe scriptall together. One reason
producersonlytake this formatisthat its easyto read, one page of a scriptshouldequal one minute
of screentime.Myscriptis fourpagesso shouldcome outto be aboutfourminutes.Whenwriting
my scriptI usedCeltex, anonlinescriptwritingtool whichhelpedme formatmy scriptcorrectly.
My scriptwentunderthree mainrevisions.Afterwritingmyfirstdraft;IrealisedIusedtomanyseen
breaks, inone scene somethingwouldhappeninsideandoutside the house andeverytimeit
changediddescribe the setting. However youshouldonlydothisif the settingchanges. Alsorealised
howvague my descriptionsof eventswere soIwentoveragainimproving.AftermyseconddraftI
askedmyfriendstoread,friendsof the targetaudience,andtheybelievedthat inorderformy
audience tocare aboutthe protagonistIneedto give himaspirations, family, somethingtomake my
audience care aboutweatherhe livesordies.InmyheadI believedthatthe horrorcame fromthe
fact that Tom couldbe anyone andthat the audience will putthemselvesinhisshoes;howeverIcan
still have thiseffectandmake Tommore of a fleshedoutcharacter.
Overall nowIbelievemyscriptisready.It describesthe locationsandeventscorrectlyandshows
Tom to be a fleshedoutcharacterfor the audience tocare about.I had the same people readover
my scriptand theysaidthe same.
