Camerawork Dialogue/Sound Editing/Timing Evaluation
The opening scene to
Sweeny Todd is a low
angle longshot of a
boat appearing
through the fog on the
ocean with the cam-
era at a fixed frame
Non diegetic instrumental
music is introduced of what
sounds like a wind instru-
ment or a string instru-
ment. It sounds dramatic
and slightly regal. There is
also the diegetic sound of
the waves crashing around
the boat gently and the
seagulls at the sea shore
This is a relatively short
take with the transition
of a fade of the boat
coming in through the
fog and the use of low
key lighting and the
physical special effect of
the fog around the scene
and the boat
The camera at a fixed frame has been done to
prevent the viewer from becoming disorientated
or distracted, the music of the scene has been
done to create an eerie tone that is also quite
happy as well as set the tone of the movie to be
quite dramatic and musical. The low key lighting
has been done to create the sense of spookiness
and the shadows and fog to be emphasised in the
darkness and make the boat seem mysterious and
the transition of the fade has been done to
present the start of the movie dramatically.
These effects fit in with the genre of musical
horror because the music has been introduced
straight from the beginning and the setting has
been done to create the sense of an eerie,
mysterious and foreshadowing atmosphere

This is an establishing
point of view shot of
the city of London
from the viewpoint of
a boat. The camera is
panning to the right
Non diegetic instrumental
music is heard picking up
into a happy tone to then
reduce back down again
before climaxing to a happy
tone once more, the dieget-
ic sound of seagulls at the
shore can also be heard
This is a long take to allow the
viewer to get a sense of the
scene and the atmosphere and
set the tone of the movie. The
transition is a cut and low key
lighting has been used. The
physical special effect of fog
has also been created as well as
continuity editing
The camera is panning to the right to give the
viewer a wider scene of what is going on and it is a
long take to allow the viewer time to process the
scene and tone of the movie. The instrumental
sound has been used to create a light hearted
atmosphere to interest the viewer and set the
tone. The fog and the low key lighting has been
used to create a mysterious and spooky effect and
the props of the houses in the background is used
to set the scene to an older time period. This
scene fits in with the genre of horror musical
because music has been introduced instantly and
the scene has been created to seem eerie and
unnerving, possibly foreshadowing negative or
creepy events due to the darkness and connota-
tions to fog being ghostly and mysterious.

Non diegetic instrumental music
can be heard continuing to play
as well as diegetic sound of the
man singing. The track is called
‘No place like London’ and is by
Stephen Sondheim, sang by
actors Johnny Depp and Jamie
Campbell Bower in the movie.
The diegetic sounds of the
boats sail pulling and the boats
bell can also be heard.
This is a short take
scene with the use of
low key lighting. Physi-
cal special effects of
the wind blowing the
actors hair back and
the fog in the sky has
also been used
The camera movement of the hand held camera
has been used to imitate the motion of the boat,
the low angle shot has also been used to disorien-
tate the viewer slightly and make the viewer feel
vulnerable. The non diegetic instrumental music
and diegetic sound of his singing has been put
together to set a tone to the movie and to fit the
genre of a musical. The physical special effects of
the wind blowing the actors hair back and the grey
fog in the sky has been used to make the scene
seem more realistic and create connotations to
mystery and the foreshadowing of negative events
to fit in with the genre of horror. The props of the
mans clothing and the boat helps to set the scene
time period to the viewer and the scene is a short
take to allow the viewer to feel suspense and
intrigue the viewer as to what is going to happen
next in the movie.

movement
The non diegetic instru-
mental music can be heard
alongside the sound of the
actor singing. Diegetic
sounds can also be heard
such as the boats sail under
strain, the boats bell slowly
rhythmically ringing and
the waves crashing gently
against the boat
The lighting is low key, the
scene uses the transition of
a cut from the actor sing-
ing and it is a short take
scene.
The camera has hand held movements to make
the scene feel more realistic and show the
swaying of the boat, it can also make the viewer
feel disorientated which fits in with the horror
genre. The lighting being low key has been done
to set the tone of darkness with connotations to
death, misery, hardship and the foreshadowing
of negativity. It is a short take to show the
viewer the scene of where the boat appears to
be sailing towards, London, which helps to
establish the setting and the location for the rest
of the movie. The sound of the non diegetic
instrumental music and the actor singing helps
set the tone of the musical and by listening to
the lyrics the man is singing it explains a bit of
background history which helps the viewer
understand the movie better and his character.

In this scene the camera is
handheld and pans to the
right slowly. It is a close up
shot of Sweeny Todd’s face
when he enters the scene
There is the continuation of the
diegetic sound of the actor singing
alongside the non diegetic sound of
the instrumental soundtrack howev-
er in this scene the diegetic sound
of another actor comes into the
scene and also sings with a much
deeper and lower tone that the non
diegetic instrumental soundtrack
adjusts to fit in with accordingly
This is a long shot of the panning of
the camera to then introduce anoth-
er character. The use of physical
special effects has been used to
create the blowing back of the
actors hair as well as the physical
special effect of the fog surrounding
the boat and the ocean. There is
also the use of low key lighting. This
scene uses the transition of a cut
The camera remains handheld to continue to
imitate the motion of the boat and make the scene
more realistic. The use of the panning to the right
is used to then allow the main character of Sweeny
Todd to enter abruptly from the right of the scene,
making his appearance unexpected to fit in with
the horror genre of fear and unexpected events.
The deeper voice of Sweeny Todd coming into the
diegetic sound alongside the non diegetic instru-
mental music tone dropping to adjust to his singing
tone creates a sense of anger to make the viewer
feel uneasy and on edge, fitting with the genre of
horror. The use of the low key lighting has been
used to emphasise the light on the actors faces in
contrast to the darkness around and emphasise the
shadowing and the physical special effects have
been used to make the scene more realistic

This is a high angle
longshot with the
camera at a fixed
frame
The diegetic sound of the actors
footsteps walking along the wooden
boat floor can be heard. The non
diegetic instrumental soundtrack has
slowed in pace to turn slightly sinis-
ter and the diegetic sound of the
actors talking has stopped. The
diegetic sound of the sail straining,
the waves against the boat and the
boats bell ringing in the distance
can also be heard
This is a short take with low
key lighting and the physical
special effects of the wind
blowing gently on the actors
hair and the boat ropes as
well as the physical special
effect of the fog around the
boat. This scene uses the
transition of a cut
This is a short take scene to give the viewer a brief
glimpse of the overall scene from an almost aerial
point of view to put the viewer in a position of
power and observation for a moment. The non
diegetic instrumental soundtrack slows right down
to an eerie tone different from the happy high
pitched tone presented earlier. The diegetic sound
of the actors singing has stopped completely to be
replaced with the actors footsteps walking across
the boat slowly. This fits in with the genre of
horror of the film because it shows a dramatic shift
in the atmosphere that was unexpected and is
foreshadowing of negative events yet to come, it
puts the viewer on edge and makes the viewer feel
uncomfortable because they are unaware of what
is about to happen. The props of the actors
clothing and the boat also sets the time period
which helps create the genre of horror

shot allows the viewers to get a sense of the
relationship between both characters featured in
the scene. The non diegetic instrumental
soundtrack in the background fits in with the
horror genre because it is foreboding and thought
provoking as well as eerie and the long take
allows the viewer to focus on the details of the
main character for an uneasy amount of time.
The use of the low key lighting emphasises the
facial features of the actors and the shadowing in
the scene of darkness, fitting in with the genre.

It is a long take with

This scene is a long shot to give the
viewer a sense of the surroundings
and show the viewer that the boat is
heading into London. It is typical of
the horror genre because it gives
the viewer a sense of foreboding
that negative events will take place
in London due to the unnerving
sinister music continuing to play and
the emphasis on the entering into
London alongside the darkness of
the low key lighting

set the tone of the musical and by listening to
the actors tone it sets the genre of horror
because he is angry and sinister and that makes
the viewer feel uneasy and concerned.

camera at a fixed
frame
There is the continuation of the non
diegetic instrumental soundtrack
with the diegetic sound of Sweeny
Todd singing, his pitch and tone
lightens and adjusts according to
the instrumental music variation and
towards the end of this scene the
tone picks up and his singing sounds
almost happy or mocking
This is a short take with
the transition of a cut,
low key lighting and
physical special effects
of the wind blowing the
actors hair, the fog
around the boat and the
lights in the distance to
portray land.
The fixed frame camera shot has been done to
allow the viewer to really focus on the actor, it is
a short take to allow for the viewer to focus on
him for only a short amount of time and wonder
what he might do next. The low key lighting has
been used to emphasise the darkness around the
scene conotating to mystery, death and the
foreshadowing of unfortunate events as well as to
define his facial features and this pale skin giving
it an eerie sense of illness and setting the time
period to the movie. The music changing to go
higher in pitch and happier in tone is done to
confuse and make the viewer feel uneasy because
they cannot decipher if he is happy or sad and it
has the underlying tone of deep anger, fitting in
with the horror genre.

to show the viewer where the boat is heading and
to show what he is focusing on so deeply while
singing, which is effective as it suggests to the
viewer he is angry at the place which would imply
he has had bad memories there and that he is
disgusted to return. The music changing to go

Task 3 storyboard

  • 1. 1 2 3 Camerawork Dialogue/Sound Editing/Timing Evaluation The opening scene to Sweeny Todd is a low angle longshot of a boat appearing through the fog on the ocean with the cam- era at a fixed frame Non diegetic instrumental music is introduced of what sounds like a wind instru- ment or a string instru- ment. It sounds dramatic and slightly regal. There is also the diegetic sound of the waves crashing around the boat gently and the seagulls at the sea shore This is a relatively short take with the transition of a fade of the boat coming in through the fog and the use of low key lighting and the physical special effect of the fog around the scene and the boat The camera at a fixed frame has been done to prevent the viewer from becoming disorientated or distracted, the music of the scene has been done to create an eerie tone that is also quite happy as well as set the tone of the movie to be quite dramatic and musical. The low key lighting has been done to create the sense of spookiness and the shadows and fog to be emphasised in the darkness and make the boat seem mysterious and the transition of the fade has been done to present the start of the movie dramatically. These effects fit in with the genre of musical horror because the music has been introduced straight from the beginning and the setting has been done to create the sense of an eerie, mysterious and foreshadowing atmosphere Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation This is an establishing point of view shot of the city of London from the viewpoint of a boat. The camera is panning to the right Non diegetic instrumental music is heard picking up into a happy tone to then reduce back down again before climaxing to a happy tone once more, the dieget- ic sound of seagulls at the shore can also be heard This is a long take to allow the viewer to get a sense of the scene and the atmosphere and set the tone of the movie. The transition is a cut and low key lighting has been used. The physical special effect of fog has also been created as well as continuity editing The camera is panning to the right to give the viewer a wider scene of what is going on and it is a long take to allow the viewer time to process the scene and tone of the movie. The instrumental sound has been used to create a light hearted atmosphere to interest the viewer and set the tone. The fog and the low key lighting has been used to create a mysterious and spooky effect and the props of the houses in the background is used to set the scene to an older time period. This scene fits in with the genre of horror musical because music has been introduced instantly and the scene has been created to seem eerie and unnerving, possibly foreshadowing negative or creepy events due to the darkness and connota- tions to fog being ghostly and mysterious. Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a low angle point of view shot of a man with the camera showing features of hand held movement to imitate the mo- Non diegetic instrumental music can be heard continuing to play as well as diegetic sound of the man singing. The track is called ‘No place like London’ and is by Stephen Sondheim, sang by actors Johnny Depp and Jamie Campbell Bower in the movie. The diegetic sounds of the boats sail pulling and the boats bell can also be heard. This is a short take scene with the use of low key lighting. Physi- cal special effects of the wind blowing the actors hair back and the fog in the sky has also been used The camera movement of the hand held camera has been used to imitate the motion of the boat, the low angle shot has also been used to disorien- tate the viewer slightly and make the viewer feel vulnerable. The non diegetic instrumental music and diegetic sound of his singing has been put together to set a tone to the movie and to fit the genre of a musical. The physical special effects of the wind blowing the actors hair back and the grey fog in the sky has been used to make the scene seem more realistic and create connotations to mystery and the foreshadowing of negative events to fit in with the genre of horror. The props of the mans clothing and the boat helps to set the scene time period to the viewer and the scene is a short take to allow the viewer to feel suspense and intrigue the viewer as to what is going to happen next in the movie.
  • 2. 4 5 6 Camerawork Dialogue/Sound Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a point of view longshot with the camera showing hand held gentle movement to imitate the boat movement The non diegetic instru- mental music can be heard alongside the sound of the actor singing. Diegetic sounds can also be heard such as the boats sail under strain, the boats bell slowly rhythmically ringing and the waves crashing gently against the boat The lighting is low key, the scene uses the transition of a cut from the actor sing- ing and it is a short take scene. The camera has hand held movements to make the scene feel more realistic and show the swaying of the boat, it can also make the viewer feel disorientated which fits in with the horror genre. The lighting being low key has been done to set the tone of darkness with connotations to death, misery, hardship and the foreshadowing of negativity. It is a short take to show the viewer the scene of where the boat appears to be sailing towards, London, which helps to establish the setting and the location for the rest of the movie. The sound of the non diegetic instrumental music and the actor singing helps set the tone of the musical and by listening to the lyrics the man is singing it explains a bit of background history which helps the viewer understand the movie better and his character. Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation In this scene the camera is handheld and pans to the right slowly. It is a close up shot of Sweeny Todd’s face when he enters the scene There is the continuation of the diegetic sound of the actor singing alongside the non diegetic sound of the instrumental soundtrack howev- er in this scene the diegetic sound of another actor comes into the scene and also sings with a much deeper and lower tone that the non diegetic instrumental soundtrack adjusts to fit in with accordingly This is a long shot of the panning of the camera to then introduce anoth- er character. The use of physical special effects has been used to create the blowing back of the actors hair as well as the physical special effect of the fog surrounding the boat and the ocean. There is also the use of low key lighting. This scene uses the transition of a cut The camera remains handheld to continue to imitate the motion of the boat and make the scene more realistic. The use of the panning to the right is used to then allow the main character of Sweeny Todd to enter abruptly from the right of the scene, making his appearance unexpected to fit in with the horror genre of fear and unexpected events. The deeper voice of Sweeny Todd coming into the diegetic sound alongside the non diegetic instru- mental music tone dropping to adjust to his singing tone creates a sense of anger to make the viewer feel uneasy and on edge, fitting with the genre of horror. The use of the low key lighting has been used to emphasise the light on the actors faces in contrast to the darkness around and emphasise the shadowing and the physical special effects have been used to make the scene more realistic Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a high angle longshot with the camera at a fixed frame The diegetic sound of the actors footsteps walking along the wooden boat floor can be heard. The non diegetic instrumental soundtrack has slowed in pace to turn slightly sinis- ter and the diegetic sound of the actors talking has stopped. The diegetic sound of the sail straining, the waves against the boat and the boats bell ringing in the distance can also be heard This is a short take with low key lighting and the physical special effects of the wind blowing gently on the actors hair and the boat ropes as well as the physical special effect of the fog around the boat. This scene uses the transition of a cut This is a short take scene to give the viewer a brief glimpse of the overall scene from an almost aerial point of view to put the viewer in a position of power and observation for a moment. The non diegetic instrumental soundtrack slows right down to an eerie tone different from the happy high pitched tone presented earlier. The diegetic sound of the actors singing has stopped completely to be replaced with the actors footsteps walking across the boat slowly. This fits in with the genre of horror of the film because it shows a dramatic shift in the atmosphere that was unexpected and is foreshadowing of negative events yet to come, it puts the viewer on edge and makes the viewer feel uncomfortable because they are unaware of what is about to happen. The props of the actors clothing and the boat also sets the time period which helps create the genre of horror
  • 3. 7 8 9 Camerawork Dialogue/Sound Editing/Timing Evaluation The camera is hand held and imitating the boats gentle movement. It is a mid shot There is non diegetic instrumental sound in the background continuing on from the previous scene with an eerie and sinister undertone with the diegetic sound of wind gently blowing, the waves gently crashing on the side of the boat, the boats sails straining, the body of the boat creaking slightly and the boats bell in the distance This is a long take with the use of the physical special effects of the wind blowing the collar of Sweeny Todd’s shirt and the hair of the ac- tors. The use of low key lighting is also used The use of the hand held camera movement to imitate the movement of the boat alongside the physical special effect of the wind blowing the actors and the diegetic sound effects of the boat creaking, the sails straining and the waves crashing against the boat makes the overall boat scene feel very realistic to the viewer. The mid shot allows the viewers to get a sense of the relationship between both characters featured in the scene. The non diegetic instrumental soundtrack in the background fits in with the horror genre because it is foreboding and thought provoking as well as eerie and the long take allows the viewer to focus on the details of the main character for an uneasy amount of time. The use of the low key lighting emphasises the facial features of the actors and the shadowing in the scene of darkness, fitting in with the genre. Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a long shot with the camera dollying forward slowly Continuation of non diegetic instrumental soundtrack can be heard to be eerie and sinister alongside the diegetic sound of the bridge slowly creaking open, large ,metal cogs turning, the boats bells continuing to ring in the distance and the waves gently crashing against the boat It is a long take with low key lighting This scene is a long shot to give the viewer a sense of the surroundings and show the viewer that the boat is heading into London. It is typical of the horror genre because it gives the viewer a sense of foreboding that negative events will take place in London due to the unnerving sinister music continuing to play and the emphasis on the entering into London alongside the darkness of the low key lighting Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation The camera is hand held and imitating the boats gentle movement. It is a mid shot There is non diegetic instrumental sound in the background continuing on from the previous scene with an eerie and sinister undertone with the diegetic sound of wind gently blowing, the waves gently crashing on the side of the boat, the boats sails straining, the body of the boat creaking slightly and the boats bell in the distance. There is also the diegetic sound of Sweeny Todd talking in an angry and sinister foreboding tone This scene comes on with the transition of a cut, using the physical special effects of the wind on the actors hair and clothing. It uses low key lighting and it a long take. The use of the hand held camera movement to imitate the movement of the boat alongside the physical special effect of the wind blowing the actors and the diegetic sound effects of the boat creaking, the sails straining and the waves crashing against the boat makes the overall boat scene feel very realistic to the viewer.
  • 4. 10 11 12 Camerawork Dialogue/Sound Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a point of view longshot with the camera showing hand held gentle movement to imitate the boat movement There is non diegetic instrumental soundtrack in the background continuing on from the previous scene with an eerie and sinister undertone. Alongside this is the non diegetic sound of Sweeny Todd talking in a fast pace and angry tone. There is also the diegetic sounds of wind gently blowing, the waves gently crash- ing on the side of the boat, the boats sails straining, the body of the boat creaking slightly and the boats bell in the distance. The lighting is low key, the scene uses the transition of a cut from the actor sing- ing and it is a short take scene. The sound of the non diegetic instrumental music and the actor talking helps set the tone of the musical and by listening to the actors tone it sets the genre of horror because he is angry and sinister and that makes the viewer feel uneasy and concerned. Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation The camera is hand held and imitating the boats gentle movement. There is also the diegetic sound of Sweeny Todd talking in an angry and sinister foreboding tone. This scene comes on with the transition of a cut, using the physical special effects of the wind on the actors hair and clothing. It uses low key lighting and it a long take The use of the hand held camera movement to imitate the movement of the boat alongside the physical special effect of the wind blowing the actors and the diegetic sound effects of the boat creaking, the sails straining and the waves crashing against the boat makes the overall boat scene feel very realistic to the viewer. Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a close up shot with the camera at a fixed frame There is the continuation of the non diegetic instrumental soundtrack with the diegetic sound of Sweeny Todd singing, his pitch and tone lightens and adjusts according to the instrumental music variation and towards the end of this scene the tone picks up and his singing sounds almost happy or mocking This is a short take with the transition of a cut, low key lighting and physical special effects of the wind blowing the actors hair, the fog around the boat and the lights in the distance to portray land. The fixed frame camera shot has been done to allow the viewer to really focus on the actor, it is a short take to allow for the viewer to focus on him for only a short amount of time and wonder what he might do next. The low key lighting has been used to emphasise the darkness around the scene conotating to mystery, death and the foreshadowing of unfortunate events as well as to define his facial features and this pale skin giving it an eerie sense of illness and setting the time period to the movie. The music changing to go higher in pitch and happier in tone is done to confuse and make the viewer feel uneasy because they cannot decipher if he is happy or sad and it has the underlying tone of deep anger, fitting in with the horror genre.
  • 5. 13 14 15 Camerawork Dialogue/Sound Editing/Timing Evaluation This is an over the shoulder long shot with the camera showing hand held movement and dol- lying forward slowly There is the continuation of the non diegetic instrumental soundtrack with the non diegetic sound of Sweeny Todd singing, his pitch and tone lightens and adjusts according to the instrumental music variation and towards the end of this scene the tone picks up and his singing sounds almost happy or mocking. There is also the diegetic sounds of wind gently blowing, the waves gently crash- ing on the side of the boat, the boats sails straining, and the bells ringing in the distance. This scene is a short take with the transition of a cut, low key lighting and physical special effects of wind blowing the actors hair and the lights in the distance to signify land In this scene it cuts to behind Sweeny Todd’s head to show the viewer where the boat is heading and to show what he is focusing on so deeply while singing, which is effective as it suggests to the viewer he is angry at the place which would imply he has had bad memories there and that he is disgusted to return. The music changing to go higher in pitch and happier in tone is done to confuse and make the viewer feel uneasy because they cannot decipher if he is happy or sad and it has the underlying tone of deep anger, fitting in with the horror genre. Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation This is a close up with the camera at a fixed frame There is the continuation of the non diegetic instrumental soundtrack with the diegetic sound of Sweeny Todd singing, his pitch and tone lightens and adjusts according to the instrumental music variation and the tone of the instrumentals drops, the bells can be heard ringing louder and his tone drops to a deeply angry and sinister tone along with the instrumentals reaching a climax of danger. This scene uses the transition of a cut, low key lighting and it is a short take, using the physical special effects of the wind blowing the actors clothing and hair This scene has been done to show Swee- ny’s hatred for where they are arriving and the tone drops to a sinister climax to emphasise his anger and disgust, fitting in with both genres of horror and musical. The low key lighting and use of a close up shot really emphasises his facial features, the darkness of the circles around his eyes and shadowing of his face making his appear almost dead and linking with the genre of horror. The use of props of his clothing and his teeth helps to set the time period for the movie. The jump from the over the shoulder shot tot the close up makes the viewer feel uncomfortable and shock the viewer, fitting in with the Camerawork Dialogue/Sound/ Camera Movement Editing/Timing Evaluation
