1. Gone goodbye- A short film analysis
Gone Goodbye is a letter voiceover from a man to their wife/girlfriend, letting go of her, there are
many references to this letter being a suicide note.
Misc-en-scene
The setting shown in the short film is an American wet countryside, autumn like and aesthetic,
the main set shown is the lake, which under the monotone lighting is very effective, the grey
colours that shimmer and reflect from the sky indexically symbolize a bleak and dark tone to this
short film, which adheres to the notion that this short film may be a suicide note.
A yellow balloon is shown in the film, symbolically signifying the sun, which is further connoted
to be to people moral light, warmth and a sense of happiness, which as part of a deeper
meaning, is the life of the narrator, but when it pops, symbolises the end of the narrator's life,
where the author kills himself in the letter.
This is further backed up as he doesn’t talk later in the clip, only repeated from a lost letter
found, demonstrating at this point the narrator dies.
Editing
Editing in this short film is very simple, a lot of shots have simple shot reverse shot techniques,
but the main editing technique used was filtering.
The whole short film has a tinted murky yellow in front of it, signifying how this may be played on
tape found in the sun, this adheres to the notion of this short film being about suicide, this
technique opens interpretation that maybe the film was found with a the suicide note, which has
a great subtextual message to the short film, given it a real sense of realism.
Long takes are used for almost half the short film, the first long take is used with a drone, this
makes the footage look great, 4k footage which looks like it was filmed from a crane on a
vehicle at speed gives the imitation of a high piece.
Camera
A range of shots were used to create effect in different ways, the first 2 drone shots are done in
a way of tracking, and panning to work as establishing the two sets, one being the road and one
being the lake. This signifies a sense of realism to the short film as it highlights an open
environment and not an artificial set, and the realism acts in a way to demonstrate how the
meaning of suicide is real, and these events though fictional can happen and most likely have
happened.
2. There are a range of close ups and long shots, which all adhere to the rule of thirds, this shows
and demonstrates how the short film was filmed with this idea of audience focus in mind, thus
showing deeper meaning was thought into the creation of this short film, demonstrating how the
meaning hidden of suicide may be true.
Sound
Sound is the major key to this short film as it uses non-diegetic voice over, completely deleting
all other diegetic audio other than the balloon pop, a smooth orchestral non-diegetic piano riff
plays over the dramatic voice over, these chords being major but with a deep minor note riff
adds effect of unknowingness and discovery, the music is extremely effective and emotional.
The simple piano signifies how simple the life of the narrator is, the voiceover and song
accompany each other extremely well.
Lover(short film) analysis
Lover is a similar letter like voiceover of a croaky man talking about a past lover, from first watch
this short film is about a couple that split, but intertextually there isn’t much more to say, the
emotions of a boy who has obviously been heartbroken is backed up by beautiful music and
amazing camera work
Misc-en-scene
The setting shown in the short film changes very quickly, signifying the emotions of the narrator
has he seems to be all over the place emotionally, without any form of pattern in emotions it
really works well to effectively demonstrate his heart break. Under again another monotone
lighting effect, which works again to be creative and effective to the tone of the short film, the
grey sky and fog work well with props like a cigarette, and the scene of an industrial sight when
he talks about the present which represent a dark depressing feeling relating to his emotions.
When He talks of the past, the scene changes to a floral park, which pink shimmers in a
beautiful lighting effect, this change in tone represents the happiness he lost, finishing in the
same park with the monotone feel signifies his heart break to tread familiar ground.
Editing
Editing between shots is very simple but the actual shots have high levels of editing techniques,
many filters are used to give a similar effect of loss and depression, dark tones symbolize hurt
and the dark feelings he is conflicted with, and the lighter effects comparably symbolize
everything in the narrator's life that is good or was good, further demonstrating his conflict.
Camera
3. The first shot focus pulls into the start, this signifies how disjointed from reality he is from his
own heartbreak, having to “focus” into reality. A mix of similar mid shots and close ups
symbolize his thought process, being fast disjointed and at times confusing as these shots cut
without a fluent tempo between them.
Sound
Sound is the major key to this short film as it uses non-diegetic voice over, with organic nature
sounds of birds chirping, a smooth orchestral non-diegetic organ plays over the narrators husky
voice over, these long droned out chords adds effect of unknowingness and discovery,
reminiscent of the Finding Nemo riff, the music is extremely effective and emotional. The simple
piano signifies how simple the life of the narrator is, the voiceover and song accompany each
other extremely well.
I miss you analysis
I miss you is another voiceover short film, switching through many scenes to show the long term
relationship of a couple, using great set work and great performance to demonstrate again
heartbreak and loss
Misc-en-scene
Each set is well thought out, using mixes of low and high key lighting to produce an excellent
immersive work these two live in. The variety of scenes used symbolizes the activities and
adventures this couple have been in their time together, making their relationship thus more
effective and strong.
Editing
Editing had to be perfect to piece each scene together, montage editing is used well, to piece
together a larger story, elliptical editing works effectively to add suspense when the mood
changes. Filters are used greatly also, a light filter is applied during the happy days of their
relationship, which shows light blues and reds with pink extracts, this dramatically changes to
grey, with a dark filter which indexically signifies how relationships can become dark and
horrible for both people involved.
Camera
Uses of constant zooms and pans in each shot with uses of tracking works well in the piece to
make the film not feel static, always moving, connoting the relationship of the couple which in
short film seems to move very fast, this works effectively as these zooms and pans are a lot
4. slower when the relationship goes downhill, this is further effective as it shows how their lives
have slowed down now.
Sound
Another loud string song is used, holding long chords similar to Finding nemo once again,
connoting a happy and pretty scene, which is effective with the dramatic change.
