2. NAME AND DETAILS
Now that I have classic rock as my target audience, a unique band must be
created. The name came easier than expected; I was talking with a friend
about rock band names and I thought of combining our last names to create
Smith & Rock, a band name we both agreed would be good for any rock
band.
As for identity, the first thing I thought about was logo or what was going to be
used on the front cover, for this I looked at classic rock band album covers
and logos(see research post) and realised a typographic logo was common for
bands in that era, so I started to create a typography-based logo which is
visible on the next page.
3. This is the finalized version of the typographic logo of the band. I chose the font
for ‘Smith’ partially because the capital S looks similar to a musical notation
system and also because the fancy font would make a contrast to the ‘Rock’
font. The gradient on the yellow text is designed to give the text a gold,
reflective quality. The “Rock” is red as it is a complimentary colour to the
yellow, but also because other colours did not fit the theme of classic rock.
There is a grunge texture applied over the entireimage, most visible on the red
but is also applied to the entire image, this is to ad da sense of depth to the
entire image to stop it looking flat and boring on a front cover or other places.
I also created a grayscale version, as in my analysis I found that black &
white logos were more common

4. BAND THEME & SHOTS
Based on the joining of my friend and mine’s name, my fictional band will simply
be 2 people, that in combination with classic rock means it will include
guitars, but other than that I plan to simply emulate some of the pictures I
found in my research. ‘classic rock’ already has many connotations, so the
clothes and such will be what I found in my research, bright coloured
clothing to create the theme of psychedelic classic rock
For my front cover mid-shot, my plan is for a simple action shot of perhaps
standing with an electric guitar, and on my doublepage spread I plan for a
high-key black & white lighting shot of both of us sitting together on a white
background. My target audience research showed that these were the types
of pictures that people wanted.
5. CLOTHING & PROPS
My research showed that bright psychedelic coloured clothing was common
between almost all researched bands, so I will be using bright coloured
clothes for my shots. My doublepage spread shot is going to be black&white,
so colour is not an aspect there, which is why the clothing type must be
correct as well.
For the clothing type, I‘ll likely just wear a buttoned shirt, a jacket along with
some coloured trousers.
Props will be guitars, as a classic-rock band is heavily guitar-centric, and the
target audience will want to see them.
