1) The document discusses how the author created a music video, digipak, and poster for a band that were cohesively linked through consistent visual elements like a dark color scheme, band imagery, and fonts.
2) Key elements like the band photos, colors, and typeface were kept the same across all pieces to clearly show they were part of a single package for the band.
3) Research of other alternative rock bands informed the author's creative choices, like using dark colors that connote the genre rather than brighter colors associated with pop music.
How effective is combining a band's main product and ancillary materials
1. By Jonathan Vander
How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
2. When deciding what we wanted to do for our music
video we wanted it to link into our Digipak and poster as
we wanted it to be clear that they are all part of a single
package so I decided to stick to a dark theme
throughout which also conforms to the alternative rock
genre, this meant that it is easy to recognise that they
are linked.
I also wanted to keep simple but recognisable parts the
same throughout such as the band image, the text on
the Digipak and poster and the colours used on both of
them as it shows a clear link between all three products
3. The reason I used a dark colour scheme for my
music video Digipak and poster came from
looking at examples from other bands in the
alternative rock genre of music such as thirty
seconds to mars and foo fighters, when analysing
their digipak’s and posters I noticed a lack of
bright colours as this is mainly related to pop and
dance music as it connotes energy and
happiness whereas with alternative rock digipak’s
and posters dark colours such as blacks blues
and whites I stuck to this convention as they
resemble the genre well
4. When looking for a location to take photo’s for our
digipak and poster we decided that we wanted an
abandoned urban setting as we felt that it would suit
our genre well as some of the band poster we looked
at were photographed in abandoned areas with this in
mind we went looking for an area that suited our
specifications as if it had say too much graffiti in the
background people might begin to think that we were
a rap group instead of an alternative rock band, also
when looking for a location we wanted somewhere
that didn’t look like it was in England as our band is
American, after finding an abandoned urban area that
didn’t look like it was in England we set about taking
photographs that suited our genres conventions for
example placing each band member in the position
they would be if the band were playing live.
5. To make a clear link between my digipak and poster
follow the same conventions such as the same font
and colours, I even used the same image to make the
link even stronger as it was a consistent image that
hadn't changed at all helping to reinforce the link
between the digipak and poster, I wanted to show the
band a lot in my digipak and poster as they are the
main selling point in the music industry particularly in
an alternative rock band. I placed the band on the
digipak and poster as the target audience’s would see
the poster and immediately identify and be familiar
with who is in the band, so if they were to see the
members again they would know who they are and
what band they are a part of.
6. The colours on my digipak and poster are
conventional of an alternative rock digipak and poster
as they are dark colours, I decided to leave the logo
off of both of the digipak and the poster as I felt it was
more important for the customers to see the band
rather than their logo, I instead placed the logo on the
inside cover as the digipak still contains it meaning
that the customers would identify the link between the
band and the logo.
For the fonts I decided to find some interesting fonts
on “Dafont” so the fonts would be interesting to the
customer, also I wanted a font that would be iconic to
our band, I chose a dark blue as I thought it would
striking against the black’s grey’s and white’s.
7. When creating my digipak I wanted it to fall ito the
correct genre conventions. I had already selected my
bands font(Broken 74) so I decided that my CD’s
should have the “cracked effect” on the disk as they
linked very well, I decided that a plain silver cracked
disk would be very boring so I began colouring them I
eventually ended up with a black and white disc and
a blue and white disk.
8. The black and white CD links with the colour scheme
of my digipak which I made the main CD and a blue
one which links with our name (Cold liberty) and the
colours of our digipak I made the blue one the bonus
disk as I felt that the black and white one was the
most professional looking one out of the two.
For my front and left cover I used photo’s of the
band again to make reference to the band which is
another convention of alternative rock digipak for the
inside panel I placed the bands logo as I felt that it
would detract from the main image of the band if I
placed it on the album cover, so I placed it on the
inside instead as I believe that the customers will still
identify the logo with the band.
9. On the whole I believe that there is a very effective
combination of my main product and ancillary texts
as they all have a reoccurring theme throughout my
music video, my digipak and my poster I achieved
this through keeping colours fonts and costumes all
the same throughout the project this was important
as it made my product unique and identifiable which
made it easier to become familiar with which is
effective as it will be easier to sell it to customers
