Censorship involves suppressing communication deemed objectionable by controlling bodies like governments and media outlets. There are arguments both for and against increased censorship of media accessible to children. Supporters argue it can confuse children's understanding of right and wrong, while opponents counter that parental controls and watershed blocks on explicit content are already sufficient, and artists should have freedom of expression. Parents remain concerned about content their children may access outside of parental controls. Artists also argue against censorship of their work which they see as self-expression.
2. What is it?
• Censorship is the suppression of speech or other
public communication which may be considered
objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient as
determined by a government, media outlet, or
other controlling body.
• Ofcom control the censorship for TV and radio.
BBFC control the censorship for film.
3. Should
• There should be more censorship as children react
to what they see as they are still growing up and
developing, seeing music videos having stars
drinking and taking drugs, confuses them, to
understand what is wrong and what is right. As
artists are seen to be role models they would feel as
though they want to be just like them. If they are
drinking and doing the wrong thing, maybe it is
okay.
4. Should Not
• There shouldn’t be more censorship as there’s already
enough. On the radio there are specific edits to songs.
So if there is a swear word they would either block it out
or they get the artist to re-do the song with appreciate
words.
• Explicit music videos are moved to be shown on TV at
later times in the evening, when children would not be
awake. Which is the watershed. ‘We Found Love’ was
only shown on TV after 9pm.
• There are also choices in which parents/teachers can
make to prevent their children from watching
inappropriate things. This includes blocking online sites
with URL filtering. For parents they can also put a
parental lock on the TV on specific shows they do want
their child to be exposed to.
5. Parent
• Regarding censorship parents would be concerned and
feel as though there is not enough. Even though there
may be parental control at home, they can’t say the
same thing about it outside of home. Even though the
radio and some schools block children from viewing and
hearing things they shouldn’t. Outside of that it they are
not in control, other homes may not be as secure as one
parent. Also friends may be able to access the original
versions of songs in some ways. Artists do produce CD’s
that have a clean version where all the songs are
acceptable to listen to but they also sell the explicit
which are able to access easily.
• Though Youtube may have age limits to certain
videos, not all of them are blocked, which then courses
there to be concerns.
6. Artist
• Artists may be against wanting there work to be
censored not only because they want more
publicity but it is their job. They want there product
to be seen and heard. Even though their work may
be seen as inappropriate they feel as though they
are expressing themselves in there music. So if the
music video is gory or having a lot of bad
behaviour. There is something behind it that matters
to them. If they chose to swear in a song they feel it
is better put across that way, much stronger than it
just being other words.
