2. Emeli Sande
My Kind Of Love
The genre you would identify with Emeli Sande‟s music
video „My Kind Of Love‟, would be soul.
From the start of the music video three are straight cuts
and close-ups on patients in a hospital, which the lyrics to
the song is going to relate to.
When the artist walks into the hospital a tracking shot is
used going backgrounds as the artist is walking down the
hall. The tracking shot is switched over moving forward
following the artist down the hall.
With the close-up you can identify the artist, including the
person she is communicating with.
There are point of view shots used when the artist is
looking at the photos and when her friend is in the back
seat sleeping.
3. Leona Lewis
Trouble
The genre is hard to identify within this music
video, with some research I found that this
song is classed as R&B. Although watching
the music video you would not have thought
that. Straight away as the music video starts
there is a close-up used. As Leona Lewis has
not been around for a while a close-up may
have been used to show her appearance and
how she looks now as to the last time she was
seen in her previous music video.
Fast paced editing was used matching the
pace of the backing track.
4. Eminem
When I‟m Gone
This genre is easily identified as rap. The way that the music video has
been structured is very clever.
Before the music starts you already feel connected as this is a meeting
where people are talking about their problems. As the artist is on the
stand talking close-ups are used to show the audience who it is that is
rapping. As he is telling his story fades and blackouts are used. It is as
though we are his memory flashing back to what he had experienced.
Everytime that the fades occurs it‟s as though he is blinking into these
different events, this is effective as you feel more connected with the
artist as he is actually rapping about his actual life. There is also a
dreamy effect used as he is dreaming this point, this works as you can
then tell the difference from his reality to what he‟s dreaming. Although
this music video is narrative it is also performance as he is singing
directly at the camera.
All of the time the editing matches with the lyrics and the beat of the
song. For example when he says “My life flashes”, fast pace editing is
used showing clips of what we have just seen.
Long shots are used to show his full identity, including the little girl in
the music video, to show that she is young.
At the end of the music video a point of view shot is used showing him
looking at the people clapping, whilst he goes to take his seat.
5. Lifehouse
All In
The genre identified within this music video is rock.
In this music video a lot of previous films have been
merged together. The music video is based on a live
performance, including behind the scenes of the bands
themselves in different locations. To merge them together
fades and straight cuts have been used. The colour has
been altered into black and white.
Following the artists around in the different locations a
handheld camera had been used. When the artists are
live on stage long shot are used to show the whole band
and the instruments that they are playing, including the
fans that are below singing along with them. There is a
tracking shot used to show the crowd, which can also be
seen as a point of view shot as that is what the band is
seeing. With medium shots they are used to identify the
lead singer.
6. The Editing and camera
shots
By using all the editing techniques it‟s helping to set
the mood whether the backing track is slow or fast.
Certain camera shots are used and edited in
moments that are relevant, to the song. Whether
there being a straight cut into a scene that relates to
the lyrics which maybe an artist in a different location
or a narrative scene. The multiple camera shots are
important to see the facial expressions of the artist
singing the song and identify them, or their body
language. To see the location and surroundings of
the artist is important as it will also help to tell the
audience what the artist is trying to show.
