He advised having a plan for a new hire's first day and week, setting clear expectations, allowing them to ask questions, building a relationship with them, and finding out what's important to them. Throughout, he noted things employers should not do, such as being misleading in interviews, having unrealistic goals, hazing new employees, or acting like executives are unapproachable.
