1.BACKGROUND
Tell me a little about your personal career story to date.
I started my career as a data analyst at the age of 18 working
with a managed services company which handled service
tickets relating to Software and Hardware IT support.
I worked evenings (4pm to 12am) in the role while completing
a university degree in Computer Science.
Once I graduated, I worked as a freelance Marketing Analyst
in the hotel and automotive industry. I worked with many
Marketing & CRM systems to build layers of analytical
dashboards that enabled actionable insights.
In 2019, I joined a Digital Agency as a Lead Data Strategist
to identify and develop marketing analytics solutions for Blue
Chip companies such as Disney, British American Tobacco
and Unilever.
I currently work at a Data Consultancy as a Senior BI
Consultant where I lead the BI developments for large scale
projects for clients such as Kingfisher, Imperial and Avanti
West Coast Rail.
What are some of the challenges you have when moving on
in your career and looking for new opportunities?
When moving to a new consultancy, the biggest challenge is
to quickly learn their tools and processes.
The data industry is still relatively young which means there
are still gaps in best practice and documentation
Oftentimes one has to fill these gaps by undertaking extensive
research to ensure that tasks are being completed in the most
effective, efficient way.
Client wise, many companies are only now starting to harness
the potential of their data.
It takes a carefully planned, strategic approach to drive lasting
change in an organisation.
One often has to upskill employees while showcasing the
benefits of learning new tools.
This can be a challenge as there is often push back due to the
inherent change.
What has been your experience of working with recruitment
companies, both positive and downsides?
I believe recruitment companies are a good representation of
the prospective employer. If there is a lack of care and due
diligence, the company is likely to accept the same standard
of work from their employees.
On the other hand, some recruitment companies are top
notch. They keep the candidate up to date, provide great
insight into interview prep, and ensure questions are answered
effectively.
What’s important to you about the recruitment company
you work with? Both from a hiring perspective and also
with regards to discussing new opportunities for yourself?
It is important that a recruiter places the candidate in the best
possible light while being honest with the candidate if they
would be a good fit.
A good recruiter recognises both soft and hard skills and
doesn’t make judgements based on gender, age or ethnicity.
A good recruiter adapts if the job role they have in mind isn’t
the right fit by recommending other opportunities on their list.
They keep in contact leading up to the start date to ensure
that everything is on track and provide support where needed.
2. ACTIONS / BEHAVIOURS
What specifically happened when you worked with us?
Ryan contacted me on LinkedIn for a BI role that fit my skill
set.
However, after completing an interview I realised that the role
was not the right fit for me.
Ryan quickly adapted and suggested that I consider another
opportunity with a different company where he felt that both
my skills and personality would be a great fit.
Ryan was absolutely right. The first interview with the new
company was great. I resonated with their values and was
really hoping to be given an opportunity to work there.
How did you feel when we first connected?
