Hinges
Hinges are considered as the most
useful mechanical invention of mankind.
These small but useful
mechanical devices aid limited rotation
between two flat surfaces. It's all
because of hinges that closing of doors
and windows shutters , storing of items
inside cabinets, etc. is possible .
Cabinet Hinges
Cabinet hinges come in a large variety and each one of them
has unique features.
CABINET DOOR HINGES – TYPES
 Butt Hinges / mortise hinges,
 common , brass or SS. Very simple ,
contains two metal leaves connected by a pin. among
the strongest door hinges .
but altering their assembly once fitted is difficult.
Very easy to install.
 Butterfly Hinges/ Parliament (UK) hinges,/
dovetail hinges.
 butterfly shaped plates with small
cylindrical pin between them. Many sizes ,
very decorative , economical . Arte visible door
hinges and used for light-weight cabinet doors.
 FLUSH HINGE:
 does not require a recess / cut. Not very strong
as butt hinges ,
used for light-weight doors and small box
construction.
 BARREL HINGE : in two parts. The
threaded part of the hinge is screwed into a
pre-drilled hole. easy to fit and can be
dismantled.
 European hinges / CONCEALED
HINGE/ cup hinges
made up of two parts. One part is the
hinge cup with its arm while the other ,
the plate that is mounted on the door.
Suitable for frameless shutters of
cabinets.
invisible. sometimes self closing, /
automatic. Easy to install , very flexible
and popular.
normally in two sizes (25mm and
36mm .The hinge is adjustable once
fitted.
 CONTINUOUS or PIANO HINGE
these come in different lengths , brass
or steel.
suitable where a long hinge is required
such as a desk top or a cupboard door.
Small countersink screws are normally
used to fix it in position.

Other Types of Cabinet Door Hinges
• Pivot hinges
• Strap hinges
• H hinges
• HL hinges
• Counter-flap hinges
• Hinge Tees
• Overlay hinges
The parts that make up a
hinge will vary in appearance
for different hinge types and
styles, yet they still perform
the same functions.
Reversible hinges may be
used on either left or right-
hand cabinet doors.
 Frame Wing: Part of the hinge that
attaches to the cabinet frame.
 Door Wing: Part of the hinge that
attaches to the cabinet door.

Knuckle: Connects the frame wing
and door wing and allows rotation.
 Pin: Holds the hinge together.
Full Wrap-Around: Frame wing wraps three
sides of the frame and screws to the inside edge.
Partial Wrap-Around: Frame wing wraps two
sides of the frame and screws to the edge.
 Wrap-Around Hinges: Wrap-around hinges make
perfect door hinges for cabinets that have
overlapping doors. This hinge is fitted to the
outside of the door and is usually used for
increasing the strength and stability of the door
frame. These door hinges are characterized by a U
shaped design that wraps all the three parts of the
cabinet door edge.
Frame wing wraps two sides of the frame and allows
the door to overlap the frame, door wing accepts a
door with the mounting edge sloping inward.
 Both wings of the hinge are
mounted to the inside surfaces of
the cabinet door and frame,
concealing both wings and leaving
the knuckle exposed.
Frame wing wraps two sides of the frame and
allows the door to overlap the frame
The frame wing is visible when the cabinet
door is closed. The door wing is concealed
and extends into the frame cavity.
 The frame wing is visible when the
cabinet door is closed. The door wing is
concealed
 Both wings of the hinge are mounted to the
outside surfaces of the cabinet door and frame.
Pivot hinges
 Cabinet door Pivot
hinges are used on
revolving and full inset
cabinet doors. Hinge
end of cabinet door
must be rounded for
doors to swing clear.
Attach pivot hinges at
top and bottom of
cabinet doors.
 Offset Knife hinges
allow doors to be
setback, yet swing open
and clear corner posts.
Use offset knife hinges
for inset doors. Offset
knife hinges are steel with
an antique bronze finish.
Fixed pin
Knife hinges
Rack & pinion system
Security
 A latch is a type of
mechanical fastener
 typically engages another
piece of hardware on the
other mounting surface
Deadbolts & locks
Latches
Self taping screw
 A fastener is a hardware
device that mechanically joins
or affixes two or more objects
together.
 Fasteners can also be used to
close a container = a bag,
box, envelope etc.
Fixing / Fastener
 ROUND HEAD
SCREW: These are
used for fixing pieces
of material together
where countersunk
holes are not being
used. Round head
screws can look quite
decorative especially if
they are made of
brass.
 POZIDRIV HEAD:
Used with special
screw drivers which
will not slip when
pressure is applied.
This is ideal when
using screws in
corners or confined
spaces.
 COUNTERSUNK -
SLOT HEAD: This
can be used for
general woodworking
for example fitting
hinges to doors.
Because the screw is
countersunk it can be
tightened 'flush' to
the surface of the
material.
 Bed lock brackets are used to
widen wooden beds which use
a double hook bed rail fastener
like our 5997K. Bed lock
brackets bolt to head boards
and foot boards extending the
width of the bed 3" on each
side.
 Need to determine the length
of your side rails: if side rails
are not long enough they will
need to be replaced or
lengthened by a cabinetmaker
TWO BLOCK FITTING (LOK-JOINTS):
RIGID JOINT
KNOCK-DOWN (K/D) JOINTS
CAM LOCKS: SCAN FITTINGS:
 Industrial knobs are
used for a variety of
machine and
equipment functions.
They can be used for
tightening, fastening
or as just as a knob to
pull things open.

Adjustments
 are used whenever loads need to be lifted or lowered in a
controlled manner. They provide force assist and thus
ensure optimum weight equalization.
 Adjustment of tables, chair seats and chair backrests,
gym machinery, control panels and desks, beds and
patient equipment. That is anywhere where ergonomic
factors demand variable adjustment.

How hi-tech now ?
 Identifies who was there
 Records when they were there
 Works with keys that cannot be
duplicated
 Lets you define days and times of
day that each user has access
 This is Touch Access 200,
 a durable, intelligent lock from
Videx ,easy to install on cabinets,
file drawers, and storage chests.
 The keys used with Touch Access
200 are small electronic buttons
that uniquely identify each user--
no two keys are alike. When an
authorized user touches the lock
with their key, their key ID is
recorded in the lock with the
current date and time. Any attempt
to open the lock without an
authorized key touch will sound a
local alarm, and the mechanical
lock will not open. Locks can also
require two, three, or four keys for
an authorized opening.
 safety infra-red beams are
fitted to openers, the door
will automatically stop and
reverse if the beam is
broken whilst the door is
closing.
 This means if a child, pet or
vehicle, goes under the
door while it is losing, the
door will stop and reverse,
without making contact with
the child/pet/vehicle.

Hardware & suitability

  • 2. Definition 1. Metal ware, as tools, Locks, hinges, or cutlery. 2. The mechanical equipment necessary for conducting an activity, usually distinguished from the theory and design that make the activity possible. Not every piece of hardware fits in everywhere
  • 3. These are the fittings which are used for assembling, joinery, decoration, & effective operation of furniture equipment. These include · furniture slides · hinges, · handles, · door openers, · automatic movement gadgets, · connectors, · motion control equipment, · lighting systems, locks, · leveling equipment for furniture etc. · Foot mounts, Castor wheels Fittings are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, finishes, and applications.
  • 4. Hardware when used :  Operability  Fun / playfulness  Aesthetics / appearance  Security & Safety  Support & fix.  Durability & life  Stylized

  • 6. Hardware can be:  Mechanisms for Opening & closing.  Fittings for fixing.  Security mechanisms & fastenings  Revolving & Rotating  Hanging or suspensions  Adjustments.  Sliding  Control  Cover ups  Leverage  Hold / stop  Pull  Push  Support systems & many more
  • 7. Opening / closing Hinges Hinges are considered as the most useful mechanical invention of mankind. These small but useful mechanical devices aid limited rotation between two flat surfaces. It's all because of hinges that closing of doors and windows shutters , storing of items inside cabinets, etc. is possible .
  • 8. Cabinet Hinges Cabinet hinges come in a large variety and each one of them has unique features. CABINET DOOR HINGES – TYPES  Butt Hinges / mortise hinges,  common , brass or SS. Very simple , contains two metal leaves connected by a pin. among the strongest door hinges . but altering their assembly once fitted is difficult. Very easy to install.  Butterfly Hinges/ Parliament (UK) hinges,/ dovetail hinges.  butterfly shaped plates with small cylindrical pin between them. Many sizes , very decorative , economical . Arte visible door hinges and used for light-weight cabinet doors.  FLUSH HINGE:  does not require a recess / cut. Not very strong as butt hinges , used for light-weight doors and small box construction.
  • 9.  BARREL HINGE : in two parts. The threaded part of the hinge is screwed into a pre-drilled hole. easy to fit and can be dismantled.  European hinges / CONCEALED HINGE/ cup hinges made up of two parts. One part is the hinge cup with its arm while the other , the plate that is mounted on the door. Suitable for frameless shutters of cabinets. invisible. sometimes self closing, / automatic. Easy to install , very flexible and popular. normally in two sizes (25mm and 36mm .The hinge is adjustable once fitted.  CONTINUOUS or PIANO HINGE these come in different lengths , brass or steel. suitable where a long hinge is required such as a desk top or a cupboard door. Small countersink screws are normally used to fix it in position.

  • 11. The parts that make up a hinge will vary in appearance for different hinge types and styles, yet they still perform the same functions. Reversible hinges may be used on either left or right- hand cabinet doors.  Frame Wing: Part of the hinge that attaches to the cabinet frame.  Door Wing: Part of the hinge that attaches to the cabinet door.  Knuckle: Connects the frame wing and door wing and allows rotation.  Pin: Holds the hinge together. Full Wrap-Around: Frame wing wraps three sides of the frame and screws to the inside edge. Partial Wrap-Around: Frame wing wraps two sides of the frame and screws to the edge.  Wrap-Around Hinges: Wrap-around hinges make perfect door hinges for cabinets that have overlapping doors. This hinge is fitted to the outside of the door and is usually used for increasing the strength and stability of the door frame. These door hinges are characterized by a U shaped design that wraps all the three parts of the cabinet door edge.
  • 12. Frame wing wraps two sides of the frame and allows the door to overlap the frame, door wing accepts a door with the mounting edge sloping inward.  Both wings of the hinge are mounted to the inside surfaces of the cabinet door and frame, concealing both wings and leaving the knuckle exposed. Frame wing wraps two sides of the frame and allows the door to overlap the frame The frame wing is visible when the cabinet door is closed. The door wing is concealed and extends into the frame cavity.  The frame wing is visible when the cabinet door is closed. The door wing is concealed  Both wings of the hinge are mounted to the outside surfaces of the cabinet door and frame.

  • 14. Pivot hinges  Cabinet door Pivot hinges are used on revolving and full inset cabinet doors. Hinge end of cabinet door must be rounded for doors to swing clear. Attach pivot hinges at top and bottom of cabinet doors.
  • 15.  Offset Knife hinges allow doors to be setback, yet swing open and clear corner posts. Use offset knife hinges for inset doors. Offset knife hinges are steel with an antique bronze finish. Fixed pin Knife hinges Rack & pinion system
  • 16. Security  A latch is a type of mechanical fastener  typically engages another piece of hardware on the other mounting surface
  • 19. Self taping screw  A fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together.  Fasteners can also be used to close a container = a bag, box, envelope etc. Fixing / Fastener
  • 20.  ROUND HEAD SCREW: These are used for fixing pieces of material together where countersunk holes are not being used. Round head screws can look quite decorative especially if they are made of brass.  POZIDRIV HEAD: Used with special screw drivers which will not slip when pressure is applied. This is ideal when using screws in corners or confined spaces.  COUNTERSUNK - SLOT HEAD: This can be used for general woodworking for example fitting hinges to doors. Because the screw is countersunk it can be tightened 'flush' to the surface of the material.
  • 21.  Bed lock brackets are used to widen wooden beds which use a double hook bed rail fastener like our 5997K. Bed lock brackets bolt to head boards and foot boards extending the width of the bed 3" on each side.  Need to determine the length of your side rails: if side rails are not long enough they will need to be replaced or lengthened by a cabinetmaker

  • 55. How hi-tech now ?  Identifies who was there  Records when they were there  Works with keys that cannot be duplicated  Lets you define days and times of day that each user has access  This is Touch Access 200,  a durable, intelligent lock from Videx ,easy to install on cabinets, file drawers, and storage chests.  The keys used with Touch Access 200 are small electronic buttons that uniquely identify each user-- no two keys are alike. When an authorized user touches the lock with their key, their key ID is recorded in the lock with the current date and time. Any attempt to open the lock without an authorized key touch will sound a local alarm, and the mechanical lock will not open. Locks can also require two, three, or four keys for an authorized opening.
  • 56.  safety infra-red beams are fitted to openers, the door will automatically stop and reverse if the beam is broken whilst the door is closing.  This means if a child, pet or vehicle, goes under the door while it is losing, the door will stop and reverse, without making contact with the child/pet/vehicle.
