The Impact Of New Technology During The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution was called a revolution because new technologies dramatically changed
American society and its economy in ways that had never before been experienced. Before the
Industrial Revolution, manufacturing was done in what are called cottage industries today.
Experienced and skilled people worked in their own homes, using their hands or hand tools and very
basic machinery, to produce hand made goods of very high quality. The Industrial Revolution changed
all that. New machines with interchangeable parts and new manufacturing methods such as the
Bessemer Process were developed to make manufacturing quicker, easier, and more profitable. Forms
of power such as steam and electricity were harnessed and put to use in new, efficient ways. These
new technologies changed people s lives in favorable and unfavorable ways. Transportation was an
industry that was majorly affected by new technology during the Industrial Revolution. The
development of the steam engine improved output and productiveness in various industries such as
mining and milling and then advanced to the transportation industry as power for steamboats and
locomotives. Another new technology which developed during the Industrial Revolution was the
subway which, along with steamboats and locomotives, improved and quickened the transport of
people and goods over long distances. Subways enabled people to travel quickly within cities. As their
rails extended and increased, subways also

Essay On This Boy s Life By Tobias Wolff
This Boy s Life shows that boys need reliable adult role models in their lives. Discuss. In his
retrospective memoir, This Boy s Life, Tobias Wolff recounts his volatile childhood during
conservative post war America and subtly explores the impact of unreliable or abusive role models on
individuals. Whilst Wolff demonstrates that there can be significant negative consequences of
unreliable or unstable adult role models, he also suggests that boys need more than just reliability and
the absence of abuse, but also positive, encouraging influences and those who [make] the world seem
friendly . Moreover, Wolff suggests that the victims of these adult role models are not necessarily
doomed to further the cycle of abuse, and are still capable of becoming well developed adults and
positive role models. Ultimately, Wolff positions the audience to understand the notable impacts of

Through the honest recollection of his childhood and unsympathetic characterisation of the adult
father figures in his life, Wolff demonstrates the impacts of negative and unreliable adult role models.
Throughout the text, Wolff positions the reader to understand the impacts of the neglectful or abusive
role models in his life, and how they leave him being subject to fits of feeling unworthy, somehow
deeply at fault . Whilst the first father figure introduced in the text is Roy, someone who is obsessive
and abusive towards Rosemary, it is not until Wolff begins to recount his relationship with Dwight that
the audience is exposed to the significant and long lasting effects of negative adult role models on
Jack. More than just physically abusing him, Dwight makes Jack feel isolated and lonely, [living] in
perpetual dusk , and [experiencing] it as more bad weather to get

The iPhone 5s is currently one of the best smart phones in the market and the flagship phone for
Apple, Inc. The iPhone 5s, which is a successor of the iPhone 5 was released in September 2014. The
iPhone 5s still has several identical features with its predecessor the iPhone 5 such as body dimensions
and display size, but offer its users features that are considered revolutionary. Some of the obvious
improvements brought about by the iPhone 5s is the upgrading of the iSight camera to a larger f2.2
aperture and a larger image sensor. These upgrades are supported with advanced imagery processing
software which is geared to enhance the ability of the phone to capture and produce quality videos and

This essay explores the mutually beneficial commercial...
This essay explores the mutually beneficial commercial collaborations between the tobacco companies
and major motion picture studios from the late 1920s through the 1940s.
Smoking in movies is associated with adolescent and young adult smoking initiation. Public health
efforts to eliminate smoking from films accessible to youth have been countered by defenders of the
status quo, who associate tobacco imagery in classic movies with artistry and nostalgia.
Both the entertainment and tobacco industries recognised the high value of promotion of tobacco
through entertainment media.
Each company hired aggressive product placement firms to represent its interests in Hollywood. These
firms placed products and tobacco signage in positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Product and brand exposure in films is the result of paid product placement, the provision of free
products as props, or personal use by actors. Product placement implies a mutually beneficial
relationship between the filmmaker and the manufacturer of the product. Initial contact may be made
by the filmmaker seeking to reduce costs, increase income, and provide realism or it may be made by
product placement firms seeking product exposure for companies they represent. Product placement
firms have evolved over the last two decades to broker relationships between filmmakers and
corporations. The usual procedure is for the product placement firm to receive scripts in advance of
production from filmmakers and review the scripts for the possible use of products they represent.
Normally this involves substituting a specific brand for a generic brand that is, instead of John meets
Mary at a coffeehouse , John might meet Mary at Curt s Coffee. The integrity of the script is
maintained, a touch of realism is provided, the filmmaker has an existing location for filming, and
Curt s Coffee receives extensive free exposure. The film cast and crew may also receive free lattes and
muffins and possibly Curt s Coffee mugs. The product placement firm receives its fee for making the
placement, and everyone connected with making the film wins.
While the tobacco industry has routinely denied active involvement in

A Beautiful Mind Analysis
Introduction
When watching A Beautiful Mind, it is hard for viewers to understand who is real and who is
imaginary until the truth is revealed. That is, in essence, what it would be like to live in the mind of
John Nash. A Beautiful Mind, directed by Ron Howard and originally based on a biography by Sylvia
Nasar, tells the story of John Forbes Nash Jr., a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a recognized American
mathematician with schizophrenia. The main ethical dilemma, which isn t introduced until the latter
part of the movie, concerns Nash discontinuing his medication. If he discontinues his medications, his
illusions will come back. The dilemma is whether it is ethically acceptable to let Nash discontinue his
medication and continue to live at home or whether he should be hospitalized. The ethical dilemma
presented in the movie impacts the characters in various ways, and the methods used to solve the
dilemma exposes ethical principles that are being abused and, oppositely, positive principles used by
the characters that are attempting to help Nash.
Summary of the content before the Dilemma
The first part of A Beautiful Mind introduces Nash and his unique way of thinking. It explains his
initial breakthrough in mathematical theories and how he met his wife. In addition, his imaginative
characters played a major role in his actions throughout the movie and can be easily thought of as
realistic people by viewers until his condition is revealed. An example of one of Nash s

The Movie Arranged Marriage
Some people follow arranged marriages through religious beliefs. Each era of their family tree has
passed this down to one another in hopes to continue culture. This marriage started in India and later
expanded into different countries like Japan, Islam, etc. In the movie Arranged it shows the
perspective of a different culture. There are two women name Rochel and Nasira. One woman is
Jewish the other Muslims and finds out plenty of similarities they share. Both families were strict on
rules and worried about other people opinions on their family names. They were two diverse families,
but different religion and culture went through the same arranged marriage process. I also learned
more about the clothing that is worn by Muslim, and this is important in their culture. Women wear a
scarf that is called hijab. In the U.S culture, it is not recommended to wear anything on your head, but
you have the option to follow any religion. According to American Culture: Traditions and Custom of
the United States Zimmermann states Nearly every known religion is practiced in the United States,
which was founded by religious freedom. I was raised upon the Christian religion, and the differences
between Rochel and me from the movie is not getting matched up with someone for marriage or
wearing clothing due to belief. Another thing I learned is the henna tattoo dye these women put on
their hands and feet, and each pattern is meaningful to their culture, and the U.S culture doesn t

Napoleon and Castro Helped to Change the World Into Which...
Politics shape the world we live in, and to change the world we live in requires a special people, for
example Napoleon Bonaparte and Fidel Castro. These two men are some of few who took the world
they were born into and changed it dramatically, but how exactly did they go about doing that?
Fidel Castro was born a bastard child, his father an immigrant from northwestern Spain, and raised on
a farm which his father led to success. Fidel was sent to a public school where he was reprimanded for
misbehaving and was sent to a prestigious private Catholic school.
Napoleon was born on Corsica an Italian island a year before it was transferred to France, whom he

Castro to take his revenge and killing him, leaving him the leader of Cuba.
Napoleon would spend the next few years fighting wars in Italy and Egypt under the French

Both of these men took control of a Nation from an unpopular government, one through force and one

Stronger gun control laws should be enacted. Firstly, the murder rate in America will decrease.
Secondly, there wouldn t be so many gun attacks and suicides. The article American deaths in

now and how they are used for attacks rather than protection. To begin with, stronger gun control laws
should be enacted because the murder rate in America will decrease. In the article, American deaths in

means, people die no matter with a gun, either they commit suicide or someone kills them. As shown

Empire Rising Character Analysis
Michael Briody, one of the bravest characters in Empire Rising, has a history of fighting for Britain in
World War I and also for the IRA during the Irish Civil War. Having a history of violence made him
perfect for moving to New York and becoming an assassin for the IRA. Briody works on the Empire
State Building to cover his illegal action with the IRA. He will later realize the significance of
working on the building. The building gives Briody the chance to figure out what he really seeks for in
life. Later in the novel he falls in love with Grace Masterson as they share a familiar past. His love
towards Grace helps him want to make a change in his life and leave all of his devastating past behind.
Through Briody s tough battles and love for Grace, he realized that he would want to find a change in
his life. Briody develops a considerable passion working on the Empire State Building. He labels the
feeling as crazy, but loves knowing that he s part of building something real for people to admire.
Most people might think it s crazy, but I love the work... (189) This quote further explains how Briody
develops the dedication making it the only thing he looked forward to in the day. The dedication he
has creates the personality of being a hard worker. There came a point in the novel where regardless
any injuries was willing to work. Working on the building was dangerous, even when Briody smashed
his finger, it was no excuse for him to miss work. This brings to believe that

Legalization of Same-Sex Marriages
In our time the traditional viewpoint that we have previously exerted in relationship to the definition
of a family is being challenged more than ever before. Regardless of whether or not that is through
grandparents raising children, foster children and adopted children being raised in families, single
parenting, interracial couples, etc. One of the most talked about issues of our time is the legality of
same sex union/marriages. The standpoint that many take on this issue is one rooted very deeply in
traditions and personal beliefs. There is a constant conflict of opinions. However, research consistently
that relationships between families are tied together based off of the quality of the relationship and
child outcomes compared to the sexual orientation of the parents. In every individual, there are desires
that are present to someday include a child into your life. Whether that be at a young or old age, you
are given the right to bear children into their world whenever you so wish as long as your
circumstances are right. For those that identify as being gay/lesbian they do not have that choice.
However even those who are involved in same sex relationships ultimately have the desire to have
children. Whether it be through adoption, artificial insemination, surrogate moms, or fostering
children they can become parents. For some individuals, they have children from previous
heterosexual relationships as they felt the need to cover up for their true identity or maybe even

Consequences of Passion Exposed in The Romance of Tristan...
Consequences of Passion Exposed in The Romance of Tristan and Iseult
The story of Tristan and Iseult celebrates the triumph of adultery. When looking vaguely at this
romance, readers may think the potion of love that they both drink is the one that makes them to
commit adultery. However, this is only a representation of the power of passion and lust Tristan and
Iseult have for each other.
To better understand this love story, one must realize that Tristan is a marshal hero who volunteers to
take a battle against the King of Ireland, in order to redeem the people and the monarch of King Mark.
It would therefore, be suitable to say that King Mark has given his nephew the trust to accomplish the
mammoth exercise. In Ireland, Tristan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This is where the story of Tristan and Iseult takes a twist because the reader knows enough that
Tristan, if given the chance, would like to have Iseult for himself. It is fascinating therefore, when
Iseult s mother entrusts Tristan with the potion of love that should only be shared between King Mark
and Iseult. By this time, Tristan and Iseult have developed passion in each other, and the potion they
would drink only enhances the chemistry that is already existent. To not drink the potion, which
Tristan knows would cause Iseult to love him even more, is attempting to remain dishonest to his true
self. Tristan is not just an ordinary man; he is a war hero seducing the would be queen of Cornwall.
Because of this predicament, Iseult as the wife to the king is to engage in adulterous affair with Tristan
to reinforce the courtly love value, while Tristan gains access to Iseult through chivalrious prowess.
The potion of wine therefore, serves as a big temptation for both, and the Christian ideal that is forced
into the situation by the hermit stands as an experiment.
How then can all these three values be reconciled in this story? I think it is not only the flaw displayed
by medieval people like Tristan to succumb to the temptation of fulfilling sexual desires. The concept
of eat, drink and be merry comes into play in this story and quite evidently, even in our contemporary
society, we have not

Essay on Common Sense
One of the most fundamental people in the push for American Independence, Thomas Paine offers
much advice in both Common Sense, and The Crisis. Paine offers very strong arguments in Common
Sense, which are supported by his own reason, his sensibility, his common sense and by his ability to
draw inference from what has already happened. Paine uses every element in his ability to help give
more depth to his arguments and plans. However, of all the cases Thomas Paine makes in Common
Sense, the ultimate goal of Paine is to incite the American Public to make a stand against British
tyranny, and break from Britain altogether, and become independent. According to Thomas Paine,

Paine reasons revolution is justified by the lack of other means, and his only option left to suggest is to
fight for independence. Throughout Common Sense, Thomas Paine shows that he is against
Monarchical government, and he says that the government type itself is not a reasonable means of
ruling a nation. To support this, he sheds light on several reasons in which a monarchy is a bad choice
for government. Paine says that all the power is unbalanced and vested in the hands of a single person,
which most of the time leads to the King of the nation using the powers he has, against his people, for
the benefit of himself, and those around him. Paine also says that to have hereditary succession of a
monarch is complete nonsense. Paine uses his reason to support this case by showing that maybe a
nation is lucky and has a well fit ruler as a King, but who is to say the King s successor will be best fit
for the position of King or Queen of a country. The notion that one ruler is fair and just, does NOT
guarantee that the successor will be as just or as fair. In addition to a just cause, America is fighting
with a few key advantages. While the British have a bigger Army and a Navy as well, America would
be fighting on its own soil. To add to that, Britain also has about 6 months worth of sailing between
her home country and the colonies themselves. Another plus side for the colonies is that they could
fight Britain just as well, even with a

Daisy Buchanan In The Great Gatsby
In the blistering winds of Antarctica, there lays a creature that relies on true love to survive. The
penguin, is a flightless bird that has aquatic capabilities and is unbothered by the frigid temperature of
its habitat. Interestingly the penguin is one of the few animals that are monogamous; In fact, they can
die from a broken heart after their chosen mate dies. These animalistic characteristics seem to be
portrayed throughout Gatsby s character, he acts in manner as if Daisy were to not love him, he would

wants to be just like the rich people. He begins works for a rich man on his yacht, changes his name

not meant for him, that this world was cruel. In the end he would see just how much he does not
belong in this world when he is shot in the back, ironically when he is enjoying the riches of his stolen
wealth. One out of the ordinary thing he does is host parties, but never enjoys them. It may seem to the
reader as though he hosts them just so he can fit in with the crowed, but in his point of view he hosts
them for a completely different reason. In reality he hosts these extravagant parties in hopes that
maybe one day Daisy, his one true love, would come. Just like how he had bought the house right

Advantages Of Js Cogens

In 2011, U.S. sales of new vehicles reached 12.7 million units, the best result since 2007.1 Sales for
2012 were projected to reach 13.8 million units, close to what many experts considered a nonbubble
sales volume of around 14 15 million cars.2 In terms of local manufacturing volume, the U.S. was
third in the world with a record low of 5.7 million new motor vehicles produced in 2009. During the
same year, Japan built 7.9 million cars and China 13.7 million. Just a decade earlier, however, in 1999,
the U.S. dominated the global car industry, manufacturing more than 13 million new vehicles, more
than Japan and China combined at the time.3 Recent volume increases in China were mostly driven by
first time buyers, government incentives, rural subsidies, and reduced sales tax for fuel efficient
vehicles. While the Chinese market was growing at an impressive rate of 40% annually,4 major U.S.
carmakers were still struggling at home.

Sexism In Video Games
Video Games. Video Gaming has been a popular form of entertainment in modern pop culture since
the early 1980 s. From the early beginnings of software producers such as Nintendo, they have been
creating games that have become favorable classics in only a few decades. With the most popular
classic video games including Super Mario Bros. (1985), Donkey Kong (1981), Pac Man (1980), and
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), we can quickly note some patterns. One of the patterns
that we can note is all of the main playable protagonists within these games are male. The second
pattern that we can note is the majority of the games listed above have a storyline written about
rescuing a princess one of the only notable female characters within the game. Along with this, the
female characters are only story advancing non playable characters (NPC s). When the online gaming
community was first introduced and popularized in the early 2000 s, females in the gaming
community quickly faced another obstacle; sexism. Anonymity within the gaming community has
become more than a tactic to hide your identity. For the majority of female gamers in the gaming
community, anonymity has become a crucial aid to avoid sexist comments and actions from other
online players. According to a 2006 Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) report, women who
were aged between 25 34 were out playing males during non console competitive gaming. Also from
this report, we can note that in the UK women have

Black Plague And The Black Epidemic
Black Plague The Black Plague outbreak was one of the scariest events in human history. The people
were afraid to do everyday activities and carry on with their normal routines. This plague is known to
almost every person on Earth. Even as a kid, teachers tell their students about this plague. Even the
thought of an outbreak like the Black Plague makes people s skin crawl. I am included in that
category. It has gotten to the point that when any outbreak of any type or kind of disease happens that
the world gets into panic mode. All of this panic comes from the Black Death. In this synthesis and

The disease spread through eight districts in the Chinese and Mongol dynasties. The deaths were so
severe that some areas didn t even have time to bury all the bodies, so they just stacked them up
against the city walls. Next, the plague spread to Europe, it arrived in Europe through trading ships.
By the time the ships landed in Messina. Most of the crew members on the ships were either dead or
infected. The abandon ships peaked a lot of interest and since the ships were infested with rodents, the
locals that looted from the ships helped the disease spread even further. By 1348 the disease spread all
the way to Genoa and Venice. Then the disease went from Italy and spread northwest France, Spain,
Portugal, and England by June 1348. This is a rapid spread rate since six countries in less than a year.
Although the disease was not yet done with Europe, it then spread east through Germany and
Scandinavia through 1350. The last stop in Europe was Russia in 1351. The last stop for the Black
Plague was the Middle East. The outbreak in the Middle East led to serious depopulation and
economic structures just like the other countries. When the disease reached Mecca, the people of
Mecca tried to blame it on non believers. The plague continued to kill people all the way up to the
Seventeenth century and there have even been isolated cases as recent as 1980 (Black Death). The
Black Plague had many different types of affects that it influenced on the people exposed to it.

The Controversial Matter Of Abortion
The highly controversial matter of abortion has been lurking in and out of many governmental
discussions and debates. It has lasted for many decades and was highly practiced until the 1880s when
laws and regulations were put into effect. Recently, this topic has been brought up once again and is
focused on areas mainly the Southern and Western parts of the United States. Abortion is one of those
topics where it can go either way; it s either pro life or pro choice. Both are two very different sides
that are so sensitive it can reach out to many people on multiple levels of their emotional and mental
state of mind, due to their many religious beliefs. Along with that, it is blown up and mixed in with the
negativity of social media and that is a clear the problem and decisions become biased. It comes to
these questions that makes me wonder about who should be involved? And why does there have to be
only one right choice for abortion and not a neutral side? Or that why can t abortion simply be
accepted by society after many decades of voting and reforming the same laws? The only thing that
separates one side from the other side is the argument of the right to life , which is pro life. It is when
a girl or a woman has an unplanned pregnancy and must under any circumstances keep the baby from
when it is conceived until when the child is born unless the mother has a life threatening situation that
involves the baby. However, a pro choicer has somewhat of a different out look on

Scar Of Smallpox Essay
The Scars of Smallpox
In a letter to Patrick Henry in 1777, George Washington wrote of Small Pox I know that it is more
destructive to an army in the natural way than the sword . At times the most minute things have the
most immense impact on our lives, such was the smallpox Epidemic of 1775. It is not known how or
where the outbreak began, but by 1775 it was raging through Boston. The devastation of Smallpox
during 1775 played a key role in the outcome of the revolutionary war and in shaping modern
medicine and how we handle diseases. But these medical advances didn t come without terrible
sacrifice. Nearly 30% of people living in the Americas or 130,658 would succumb to smallpox. The

The practice of Inoculation is used to prevent a more serious infection by introducing a small amount
of disease into the body to build immunity. The individual may be slightly ill but after the fight off the
disease the person will be entirely immune to the disease. In 1776 Edward Jenner, a british scientist
had a revelation. He noticed Cowpox, which is similar to Smallpox but not as deadly, protected the
dairy maids from Smallpox if they contracted the disease from their cows. Cow Pox caused small
blisters to form, and a low grade fever but nothing worse. The Cowpox virus was close enough in
structure to Smallpox that the antibodies made by the infected person successfully defended against
the 25 75% lethal Smallpox virus. Jenner hit upon the idea of breaking open a Cowpox blister on a
cow and scratching the liquid inside into the arm of a person. He found that this, indeed did give the
person Cowpox. Now all he had to do was to place the person next to someone with Smallpox and see
if his theory was correct, were they immune. I noticed that Jenner didn t use himself to test this theory,
but an eight year old boy named James Phippsthankfully he was

Pangloss World View In Voltaire s Candide
Throughout Voltaire s story of Candide, Pangloss world view is frequently brought into question.
Pangloss believes that the world that they live in is the best of possible worlds. He believes that this is
the case because God himself created this world. Throughout the story Candide struggles and goes
back and for the between whether or not he believes in Pangloss view of the perfect world or not. His
view is very reminiscent of the idea of fate and that all things happen for a reason. While this may not
be exactly what he meant, the way that all of the events seem to be connected and turn into something
good one way or another, closely relate to the idea of fate. While in the end both Candide and
Pangloss agree that they do live in the best possible world, there are times when they both struggled
with whether or not that was actually the case. This was especially true for Candide who was
constantly doubting Pangloss due to some event and then seeing the truth in Pangloss words when a
different event would occur. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a seemingly normal reaction for any human being. It is easy to think negatively and that the world is
not in fact a perfect place and that everything happens for a reason when things go wrong. On the
other hand, it is easy for one to see the perfection in life and the world when things are going

Sociological Structure of Haiti People
Sociological Structure of Haiti People
The past tribulation that Haiti as a country had to face from the long oppressive struggle was
surpassed after they were declared the first Black Republic. While the population of Haiiti has touched
5 million by 1980, the bludgeoning crisis of the country has not reduced in any extent. People are still
poor as the economic crisis has plummeted to the fullest point. The rural part of the country who lived
rather a decent life also moved to the urban areas for search of livelihood.
Family Structure and Authority
Haitian people believes in large family structure, the network includes large number of relatives and
friends (Dauphin, 2002). In the rural part of the country, the family follows the concept of courtyard
system (lakou) where a large group of unit shares a common space. Child care and working are shared
among the families living in the courtyard.
The urban concept of living is somewhat different from the rural areas, the ideas of living inspired by
the western culture, especially for the middle class society. Lakou are also seen in rural parts of the
city where there are concentration of shanty s.
The Haitian family structure is primarily patriarchal in nature. But since the patriarch is often absent
from the family scene because of work, the matriarchal system holds the supreme place to maintain
and manage a family (Bijoux, 1990, p. 31). Unlike the patriarchal system that essentially prevails in
the rural areas, the urban

SMART Port Security
The SMART Port Security is a legislation that created new layers of security in U.S. ports in a cost
effective manner. The legislation emphasizes the need of creating strong partnership among federal,
state, and local governments as well as with private and international organizations (Homeland
security committee, 2012). The goal is to ensure that security efforts at all levels are effectively
coordinated and integrated so that there can be more layers of security without having to invest
additional resources. This is accomplished by identifying redundancies or repetitive security measures
that are useless, which will allow port authorities to convert them into more useful security layers
(Homeland security committee, 2012). Moreover, the legislation also encourages the Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) to speed up the process of installing biometric readers to make the
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program worth it and not just a waste of
resources (Wytkind, 2012).

Neolithic Agriculture
Agriculture is one of the best things that has happened to humans. For once, humans were freed from
the bonds that nature had over them. Agriculture has allowed so much more efficiency in
domesticating animals and plants and innovating technology. These major things have branched off
into more advanced things we know of civilizations today.
Before settlement, foraging was an extremely hard life to keep up. Many of the very young and very
old were killed, because they could not live in a harsh environment of constantly moving around and
gathering food. Foragers did not have as reliable food resources as farmers. Also, some foods are
seasonal. Growing food meant that there could be a surplus to last through times of the year when
food was not being grown. The neolithic era was a popular time for people to start establishing
organized religions and sharing ideas in a more orderly fashion, whereas foragers shared among their
groups. Forager groups kept large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Foragers had a varied diet but these food were not always around. Many archaeologists believe that
foragers were healthier than farmers, because they were less exposed to disease and had more
nutrition. It is also speculated that without agriculture, social inequality would not have became a
problem. This is simply untrue, because man has a way of wanting to be over each other and after a
long time, somebody would inevitably end up as a leader. Since people had been hunting and foraging
for so long, they became very skilled at it. After a while, 75% of big game went extinct. Think of how
many more animals would have gone extinct if domestication and herding had not been introduced.
There might not have been any animals left to hunt by this time if hunting at their extent had
continued. William Howells is utterly flawless in his argument that agriculture is one of the most
important things that has happened to

The play starts out with a narrator. As the characters come out you notice they are all dressed fancy,
and the montagues are a different race then the capulets ( white and black). Romeo pulls up on a
motorcycle, to talk to Mercutio. They appear to be talking in the forest. They used the dialect that was
used in the original play, but dressed modern. The motorcycle is the only motor vehicle in the play.
Lady capulet is depicted as a woman with a temper and that doesn t take any crap, in the others she is
a pricy fancy woman. Lord capulet is depicted as a caring father whereas in the other two he seems
more abusive, to both lady capulet and Juliet. It seems to have more scenes, where it shows Romeo
and Juliet just talking on her balcony because she doesn t really have a room in the play. The only seen
where she has a room is when she drinks that potion, and they think she is dead but it just shows her
bed. When Romeo slays Tybalt with ease, it show Juliet talking about it to the nurse, and the nurse
comforting her. Tybalt has no trouble killing Mercutio in the play, while Romeo has no trouble killing
Tybalt. It shows Romeo purchasing the poison, but its is just an empty bottle in both films they
contained liquid. The man Romeo purchased the poison from was reluctant, to sell it to him in the
play. He said it didn t feel right and that he could also get in trouble for it. When Romeo drinks the

Adoption Of Children Act 1926 Essay
Literature Review
The beginnings of adoption
Prior to the Adoption of Children Act 1926, the process of adoption had no regulation or governing
law. Child adoption was an informal and generally secretive procedure which left adoptive parents
with no rights, meaning that a biological parent remained their legal guardian (Keating, 2008).
Meaning that children living as family with people who were not their parents still remained the legal
responsibility of their birth parents. This resulted in a demand for custody, of a child, regardless of the
length of time spent outside of the biological parent(s) care. This lack of formality also meant that
there were no records of adoption preceding 1927.
The increasing number of illegitimate children, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the act, the child is referred to as the infant and this encompasses any that is person under
the age of twenty one (s 1(2)). Nevertheless, the parameters were restricting as, under the Adoption of
Children Act 1926, a court had no power to make an adoption order in respect of a child who was not
a British subject and this act applied only to England and Wales although a similar Act applicable to
Scotland was passed in 1930 (Roll, 2001). An adoption order would also not be made without the
consent of the mother, where this was regarded as a crucial part of the act. This was to ensure that
mothers were not compelled by extraneous circumstances into relinquishing their children
permanently when a temporary respite was all that was needed in reality (Bridge Swindells, 2003:5).
If a mother was consenting to an adoption, it was deemed that she was willingly relinquishing her care
of the infant . A further limitation being that the rights transferred being restricted to only those
relating to the custody of the child. An adoption under this Act affected no rights of property or
succession for the adopted child and no rights on the intestacy of the new family (Bridge Swindells,

Conversion Of A Lawn Mower Essay
Conversion of a lawn mower to generator.
INTRODUCTION:
The lawn mower used had a 3.5 Horse power Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke gas engine. That particular
model motor has a safety shut off lever on the lawn mower handle which has a cable attached to the
motor, and the attached cable must be activated to disengage the motor shut off break and to allow
spark to reach the spark plug. What was decided was to cut the cable off and deactivate the motor shut
off feature. If the motor has this feature, the cable will have to be observed and also the levers on the
motor to figure out a way to deactivate or preserve the feature. In both cases the motor will not start
unless something is done about the cable and levers.
A small hole was discovered in one of the lever plates on the side of the engine, the cable was then
pulled, and a small nail was then inserted into the lever to keep the mechanism from retracting and
shutting off the motor. As stated earlier, it will take a bit of time to figure out how the motor shut off
mechanism works (if there is one installed on the motor).
PROCEDURE:
The first step is to remove the motor from the lawn mower base. Typically, there are 3 or 4 bolts
holding the motor to the base, but before they can be removed, the mower blade and the shaft coupler
that holds the blade on the motor shaft will need to be removed. Getting the blade and the coupling off
is slightly difficult, but removing the blade is not nearly as difficult, however still requires a

Uniqlo uses long lead times for their items, in order to have an effective outcome for the finished

companies (Petro, 2015, Part 1). Instead of following what the latest trend is, Uniqlo has their own
power to create the trendy style that will attract customers, versus customers demanding what they
want to see in stores. As of last year, Uniqlo has only opened 20 stores in the United States. They do
not want to take the risk of opening up a lot of stores in certain U.S. areas yet. As a part of their
customer services in retail stores, they want to focus on the customers shopping within their store.
Unlike many other retailers, Uniqlo wants to focus on their brick and motor stores and not yet on e

Threat Vectors For Cyber Security
Threat Vectors
There are three main areas identified as threat vectors for cyber security in relation to CIP: IT
networks, insider threats, and equipment and software. Normally, ICS operate on an internal network,
called OT (Operational Technology). Occasionally, this isolated network requires a connection to the
organization s corporate network (IT) for routine operation and management. As displayed in the
Ukraine blackout, cyber threats infiltrate an organization s IT systems in order to access ICS networks
on the OT network. The methods used to achieve access are often not complex procedures and can be
achieved using a wide array of methods, such as spear phishing, malicious URLs, drive by attacks (p.
1). Upon infiltration of an IT network, the threat searches for a lapse in the cyber security program in
order to access the OT networks that regulate CI.
The second threat vector, insider threat, entails IT networks and OT networks. This threat can arise
from negligence or sabotage by members within the organization (intentional or accidental). The
structure of an OT network is normally not as complex as an IT network and more susceptible to
insider threats. As stated by Epstein (2016), OT networks are usually flat with little or no
segmentation, and SCADA systems have outdated software versions that go unpatched regularly (p.
2). Thus, an unsuspecting employee that disregards protocol by disabling/weakening security settings
or connects a private network to the

Reflection About Geography
Every other year, my high school offers a College in the Schools (CIS) geography course. In this
course, there is one assignment that all the upperclassmen would always complain about. As an
underclassman, I had dreaded the year that I was going to be receiving this assignment due to having a
tendency to save my projects for last minute. I will never forget the map that taught me that
procrastination makes the process of completing assignments more difficult, especially on a project
that is for a college class.
In the beginning of November 2016, my junior year, our college geography class received our quarter
project: a map of the world. Our teacher, Mr.Sharstrom, assigned our class a large number of physical
features that our maps needed to include such as rivers, lakes, islands, mountain ranges, seas, oceans,
and deserts. Mr.Sharstrom required us to include all seven continents and a key that showed
distinctions in the different physical features of the world. The maps needed to be to scale and show a
minimum amount of distortion as possible. When we received our project, our geography teacher
warned us, This project will be time consuming and you will not want to wait until the week before to
start your maps.
After communicating expectations with the class, a majority of my classmates began to work on their
maps. I knew that my family was traveling to Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, for Thanksgiving break, so
I wanted to attempt to complete as much of the map as possible

discrimination, and had conflicts with many major historical events.
The first ancient Olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC. The Greek people
worshipped the gods, and the idea of these games came from the need to have something to dedicate

was allowed to participate. Women, however, were forbidden to participate in, or be a spectator at, the
games if they were married, but women who were unmarried were allowed to be spectators. The
ancient Olympics only consisted of seven events: long jump, discus throw, running, shot put, boxing,
horse and chariot races, and pankration (a mixture of boxing and wrestling in a type of martial arts)
(Ancient Olympic Games). In 708 BC, a pentathlon, a

  • 2. The Impact Of New Technology During The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was called a revolution because new technologies dramatically changed American society and its economy in ways that had never before been experienced. Before the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing was done in what are called cottage industries today. Experienced and skilled people worked in their own homes, using their hands or hand tools and very basic machinery, to produce hand made goods of very high quality. The Industrial Revolution changed all that. New machines with interchangeable parts and new manufacturing methods such as the Bessemer Process were developed to make manufacturing quicker, easier, and more profitable. Forms of power such as steam and electricity were harnessed and put to use in new, efficient ways. These new technologies changed people s lives in favorable and unfavorable ways. Transportation was an industry that was majorly affected by new technology during the Industrial Revolution. The development of the steam engine improved output and productiveness in various industries such as mining and milling and then advanced to the transportation industry as power for steamboats and locomotives. Another new technology which developed during the Industrial Revolution was the subway which, along with steamboats and locomotives, improved and quickened the transport of people and goods over long distances. Subways enabled people to travel quickly within cities. As their rails extended and increased, subways also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On This Boy s Life By Tobias Wolff This Boy s Life shows that boys need reliable adult role models in their lives. Discuss. In his retrospective memoir, This Boy s Life, Tobias Wolff recounts his volatile childhood during conservative post war America and subtly explores the impact of unreliable or abusive role models on individuals. Whilst Wolff demonstrates that there can be significant negative consequences of unreliable or unstable adult role models, he also suggests that boys need more than just reliability and the absence of abuse, but also positive, encouraging influences and those who [make] the world seem friendly . Moreover, Wolff suggests that the victims of these adult role models are not necessarily doomed to further the cycle of abuse, and are still capable of becoming well developed adults and positive role models. Ultimately, Wolff positions the audience to understand the notable impacts of unreliable adult role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the honest recollection of his childhood and unsympathetic characterisation of the adult father figures in his life, Wolff demonstrates the impacts of negative and unreliable adult role models. Throughout the text, Wolff positions the reader to understand the impacts of the neglectful or abusive role models in his life, and how they leave him being subject to fits of feeling unworthy, somehow deeply at fault . Whilst the first father figure introduced in the text is Roy, someone who is obsessive and abusive towards Rosemary, it is not until Wolff begins to recount his relationship with Dwight that the audience is exposed to the significant and long lasting effects of negative adult role models on Jack. More than just physically abusing him, Dwight makes Jack feel isolated and lonely, [living] in perpetual dusk , and [experiencing] it as more bad weather to get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This essay explores the mutually beneficial commercial collaborations between the tobacco companies and major motion picture studios from the late 1920s through the 1940s. Smoking in movies is associated with adolescent and young adult smoking initiation. Public health efforts to eliminate smoking from films accessible to youth have been countered by defenders of the status quo, who associate tobacco imagery in classic movies with artistry and nostalgia. Product and brand exposure in films is the result of paid product placement, the provision of free products as props, or personal use by actors. Product placement implies a mutually beneficial relationship between the filmmaker and the manufacturer of the product. Initial contact may be made by the filmmaker seeking to reduce costs, increase income, and provide realism or it may be made by product placement firms seeking product exposure for companies they represent. Product placement firms have evolved over the last two decades to broker relationships between filmmakers and corporations. The usual procedure is for the product placement firm to receive scripts in advance of production from filmmakers and review the scripts for the possible use of products they represent. Normally this involves substituting a specific brand for a generic brand that is, instead of John meets Mary at a coffeehouse , John might meet Mary at Curt s Coffee. The integrity of the script is maintained, a touch of realism is provided, the filmmaker has an existing location for filming, and Curt s Coffee receives extensive free exposure. That is, in essence, what it would be like to live in the mind of John Nash. A Beautiful Mind, directed by Ron Howard and originally based on a biography by Sylvia Nasar, tells the story of John Forbes Nash Jr., a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a recognized American mathematician with schizophrenia. The main ethical dilemma, which isn t introduced until the latter part of the movie, concerns Nash discontinuing his medication. If he discontinues his medications, his illusions will come back. The dilemma is whether it is ethically acceptable to let Nash discontinue his medication and continue to live at home or whether he should be hospitalized. The ethical dilemma presented in the movie impacts the characters in various ways, and the methods used to solve the dilemma exposes ethical principles that are being abused and, oppositely, positive principles used by the characters that are attempting to help Nash. Summary of the content before the Dilemma The first part of A Beautiful Mind introduces Nash and his unique way of thinking. It explains his initial breakthrough in mathematical theories and how he met his wife. In addition, his imaginative characters played a major role in his actions throughout the movie and can be easily thought of as realistic people by viewers until his condition is revealed. Both families were strict on rules and worried about other people opinions on their family names. They were two diverse families, but different religion and culture went through the same arranged marriage process. I also learned more about the clothing that is worn by Muslim, and this is important in their culture. Women wear a scarf that is called hijab. In the U.S culture, it is not recommended to wear anything on your head, but you have the option to follow any religion. According to American Culture: Traditions and Custom of the United States Zimmermann states Nearly every known religion is practiced in the United States, which was founded by religious freedom. I was raised upon the Christian religion, and the differences between Rochel and me from the movie is not getting matched up with someone for marriage or wearing clothing due to belief. Regardless of whether or not that is through grandparents raising children, foster children and adopted children being raised in families, single parenting, interracial couples, etc. One of the most talked about issues of our time is the legality of same sex union/marriages. The standpoint that many take on this issue is one rooted very deeply in traditions and personal beliefs. There is a constant conflict of opinions. However, research consistently that relationships between families are tied together based off of the quality of the relationship and child outcomes compared to the sexual orientation of the parents. In every individual, there are desires that are present to someday include a child into your life. Whether that be at a young or old age, you are given the right to bear children into their world whenever you so wish as long as your circumstances are right. For those that identify as being gay/lesbian they do not have that choice. However even those who are involved in same sex relationships ultimately have the desire to have children. When looking vaguely at this romance, readers may think the potion of love that they both drink is the one that makes them to commit adultery. However, this is only a representation of the power of passion and lust Tristan and Iseult have for each other. To better understand this love story, one must realize that Tristan is a marshal hero who volunteers to take a battle against the King of Ireland, in order to redeem the people and the monarch of King Mark. It is fascinating therefore, when Iseult s mother entrusts Tristan with the potion of love that should only be shared between King Mark and Iseult. By this time, Tristan and Iseult have developed passion in each other, and the potion they would drink only enhances the chemistry that is already existent. To not drink the potion, which Tristan knows would cause Iseult to love him even more, is attempting to remain dishonest to his true self. Tristan is not just an ordinary man; he is a war hero seducing the would be queen of Cornwall. Because of this predicament, Iseult as the wife to the king is to engage in adulterous affair with Tristan to reinforce the courtly love value, while Tristan gains access to Iseult through chivalrious prowess. The potion of wine therefore, serves as a big temptation for both, and the Christian ideal that is forced into the situation by the hermit stands as an experiment. How then can all these three values be reconciled in this story? I think it is not only the flaw displayed by medieval people like Tristan to succumb to the temptation of fulfilling sexual desires. Paine reasons revolution is justified by the lack of other means, and his only option left to suggest is to fight for independence. Throughout Common Sense, Thomas Paine shows that he is against Monarchical government, and he says that the government type itself is not a reasonable means of ruling a nation. To support this, he sheds light on several reasons in which a monarchy is a bad choice for government. Paine says that all the power is unbalanced and vested in the hands of a single person, which most of the time leads to the King of the nation using the powers he has, against his people, for the benefit of himself, and those around him. Paine also says that to have hereditary succession of a monarch is complete nonsense. Paine uses his reason to support this case by showing that maybe a nation is lucky and has a well fit ruler as a King, but who is to say the King s successor will be best fit for the position of King or Queen of a country. The notion that one ruler is fair and just, does NOT guarantee that the successor will be as just or as fair. In addition to a just cause, America is fighting with a few key advantages. While the British have a bigger Army and a Navy as well, America would be fighting on its own soil. With the most popular classic video games including Super Mario Bros. (1985), Donkey Kong (1981), Pac Man (1980), and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), we can quickly note some patterns. One of the patterns that we can note is all of the main playable protagonists within these games are male. The second pattern that we can note is the majority of the games listed above have a storyline written about rescuing a princess one of the only notable female characters within the game. Along with this, the female characters are only story advancing non playable characters (NPC s). When the online gaming community was first introduced and popularized in the early 2000 s, females in the gaming community quickly faced another obstacle; sexism. Pangloss believes that the world that they live in is the best of possible worlds. He believes that this is the case because God himself created this world. Throughout the story Candide struggles and goes back and for the between whether or not he believes in Pangloss view of the perfect world or not. His view is very reminiscent of the idea of fate and that all things happen for a reason. While this may not be exactly what he meant, the way that all of the events seem to be connected and turn into something good one way or another, closely relate to the idea of fate. While in the end both Candide and Pangloss agree that they do live in the best possible world, there are times when they both struggled with whether or not that was actually the case. This was especially true for Candide who was constantly doubting Pangloss due to some event and then seeing the truth in Pangloss words when a different event would occur. ... • 26. Sociological Structure of Haiti People Sociological Structure of Haiti People The past tribulation that Haiti as a country had to face from the long oppressive struggle was surpassed after they were declared the first Black Republic. While the population of Haiiti has touched 5 million by 1980, the bludgeoning crisis of the country has not reduced in any extent. People are still poor as the economic crisis has plummeted to the fullest point. The rural part of the country who lived rather a decent life also moved to the urban areas for search of livelihood. Family Structure and Authority Haitian people believes in large family structure, the network includes large number of relatives and friends (Dauphin, 2002). In the rural part of the country, the family follows the concept of courtyard system (lakou) where a large group of unit shares a common space. Child care and working are shared among the families living in the courtyard. The urban concept of living is somewhat different from the rural areas, the ideas of living inspired by the western culture, especially for the middle class society. Lakou are also seen in rural parts of the city where there are concentration of shanty s. The Haitian family structure is primarily patriarchal in nature. But since the patriarch is often absent from the family scene because of work, the matriarchal system holds the supreme place to maintain and manage a family (Bijoux, 1990, p. 31). The legislation emphasizes the need of creating strong partnership among federal, state, and local governments as well as with private and international organizations (Homeland security committee, 2012). The goal is to ensure that security efforts at all levels are effectively coordinated and integrated so that there can be more layers of security without having to invest additional resources. This is accomplished by identifying redundancies or repetitive security measures that are useless, which will allow port authorities to convert them into more useful security layers (Homeland security committee, 2012). Moreover, the legislation also encourages the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to speed up the process of installing biometric readers to make the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program worth it and not just a waste of resources (Wytkind, 2012). b) The SAFE Port Act. Agriculture has allowed so much more efficiency in domesticating animals and plants and innovating technology. These major things have branched off into more advanced things we know of civilizations today. Before settlement, foraging was an extremely hard life to keep up. Many of the very young and very old were killed, because they could not live in a harsh environment of constantly moving around and gathering food. Foragers did not have as reliable food resources as farmers. Also, some foods are seasonal. Growing food meant that there could be a surplus to last through times of the year when food was not being grown. The neolithic era was a popular time for people to start establishing organized religions and sharing ideas in a more orderly fashion, whereas foragers shared among their groups. Many archaeologists believe that foragers were healthier than farmers, because they were less exposed to disease and had more nutrition. It is also speculated that without agriculture, social inequality would not have became a problem. This is simply untrue, because man has a way of wanting to be over each other and after a long time, somebody would inevitably end up as a leader. Since people had been hunting and foraging for so long, they became very skilled at it. After a while, 75% of big game went extinct. Think of how many more animals would have gone extinct if domestication and herding had not been introduced. There might not have been any animals left to hunt by this time if hunting at their extent had continued. Lady capulet is depicted as a woman with a temper and that doesn t take any crap, in the others she is a pricy fancy woman. Lord capulet is depicted as a caring father whereas in the other two he seems more abusive, to both lady capulet and Juliet. It seems to have more scenes, where it shows Romeo and Juliet just talking on her balcony because she doesn t really have a room in the play. • 30. Adoption Of Children Act 1926 Essay Literature Review The beginnings of adoption Prior to the Adoption of Children Act 1926, the process of adoption had no regulation or governing law. Child adoption was an informal and generally secretive procedure which left adoptive parents with no rights, meaning that a biological parent remained their legal guardian (Keating, 2008). Meaning that children living as family with people who were not their parents still remained the legal responsibility of their birth parents. This resulted in a demand for custody, of a child, regardless of the length of time spent outside of the biological parent(s) care. This lack of formality also meant that there were no records of adoption preceding 1927. The increasing number of illegitimate children, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the act, the child is referred to as the infant and this encompasses any that is person under the age of twenty one (s 1(2)). Nevertheless, the parameters were restricting as, under the Adoption of Children Act 1926, a court had no power to make an adoption order in respect of a child who was not a British subject and this act applied only to England and Wales although a similar Act applicable to Scotland was passed in 1930 (Roll, 2001). An adoption order would also not be made without the consent of the mother, where this was regarded as a crucial part of the act. This was to ensure that mothers were not compelled by extraneous circumstances into relinquishing their children permanently when a temporary respite was all that was needed in reality (Bridge Swindells, 2003:5). If a mother was consenting to an adoption, it was deemed that she was willingly relinquishing her care of the infant . • 31. Conversion Of A Lawn Mower Essay Conversion of a lawn mower to generator. INTRODUCTION: The lawn mower used had a 3.5 Horse power Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke gas engine. That particular model motor has a safety shut off lever on the lawn mower handle which has a cable attached to the motor, and the attached cable must be activated to disengage the motor shut off break and to allow spark to reach the spark plug. What was decided was to cut the cable off and deactivate the motor shut off feature. If the motor has this feature, the cable will have to be observed and also the levers on the motor to figure out a way to deactivate or preserve the feature. In both cases the motor will not start unless something is done about the cable and levers. A small hole was discovered in one of the lever plates on the side of the engine, the cable was then pulled, and a small nail was then inserted into the lever to keep the mechanism from retracting and shutting off the motor. As stated earlier, it will take a bit of time to figure out how the motor shut off mechanism works (if there is one installed on the motor). PROCEDURE: The first step is to remove the motor from the lawn mower base. Typically, there are 3 or 4 bolts holding the motor to the base, but before they can be removed, the mower blade and the shaft coupler that holds the blade on the motor shaft will need to be removed. Getting the blade and the coupling off is slightly difficult, but removing the blade is not nearly as difficult, however still requires a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Threat Vectors For Cyber Security Threat Vectors There are three main areas identified as threat vectors for cyber security in relation to CIP: IT networks, insider threats, and equipment and software. Normally, ICS operate on an internal network, called OT (Operational Technology). Occasionally, this isolated network requires a connection to the organization s corporate network (IT) for routine operation and management. As displayed in the Ukraine blackout, cyber threats infiltrate an organization s IT systems in order to access ICS networks on the OT network. The methods used to achieve access are often not complex procedures and can be achieved using a wide array of methods, such as spear phishing, malicious URLs, drive by attacks (p. 1). Upon infiltration of an IT network, the threat searches for a lapse in the cyber security program in order to access the OT networks that regulate CI. The second threat vector, insider threat, entails IT networks and OT networks. This threat can arise from negligence or sabotage by members within the organization (intentional or accidental). The structure of an OT network is normally not as complex as an IT network and more susceptible to insider threats. As stated by Epstein (2016), OT networks are usually flat with little or no segmentation, and SCADA systems have outdated software versions that go unpatched regularly (p. 2). In this course, there is one assignment that all the upperclassmen would always complain about. As an underclassman, I had dreaded the year that I was going to be receiving this assignment due to having a tendency to save my projects for last minute. I will never forget the map that taught me that procrastination makes the process of completing assignments more difficult, especially on a project that is for a college class. In the beginning of November 2016, my junior year, our college geography class received our quarter project: a map of the world. Our teacher, Mr.Sharstrom, assigned our class a large number of physical features that our maps needed to include such as rivers, lakes, islands, mountain ranges, seas, oceans, and deserts. Mr.Sharstrom required us to include all seven continents and a key that showed distinctions in the different physical features of the world. The maps needed to be to scale and show a minimum amount of distortion as possible. When we received our project, our geography teacher warned us, This project will be time consuming and you will not want to wait until the week before to start your maps. After communicating expectations with the class, a majority of my classmates began to work on their maps. I knew that my family was traveling to Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, for Thanksgiving break, so I wanted to attempt to complete as much of the map as possible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These games bring people from countries all around the world together where they can forget about their problems for a couple of days every two years. Over time, the games have been being banned, have overcome gender discrimination, and had conflicts with many major historical events. The first ancient Olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC. The Greek people worshipped the gods, and the idea of these games came from the need to have something to dedicate to them. The Greeks used the city of Olympia as a place for worship, and as a meeting place for religious and political practices. At first, the games were only played for one day, but in 684 BC they were extended to three days, then during the 5th century BC, the games were changed to last five days. Status was not a factor when it came to who could participate in the games; any free male citizen was allowed to participate. Women, however, were forbidden to participate in, or be a spectator at, the games if they were married, but women who were unmarried were allowed to be spectators.
