Neighborhood Violence
Richmond, Calif. IN 2007, this city of about 100,000 people, north of Berkeley, had the dubious
distinction of being the ninth most dangerous in America. That year saw a total of 47 homicides. In
some neighborhoods, gunfire was almost a daily event.
At one point, the City Council considered asking the governor to declare a state of emergency and
send in the National Guard. Instead, in 2007, the city created the Office of Neighborhood Safety. (I
am the founding director.) Our mission was simple: to tackle this epidemic of gun violence that was
killing so many young men, mostly in our minority communities.
We modeled our approach on Cure Violence, a community outreach program in Chicago founded by
the epidemiologist Gary Slutkin. The Chicago ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The average cost to taxpayers of every gun homicide in America is nearly $400,000.
In contrast, the costs of our program were modest. In practice, we have rarely needed to pay the
full amount offered under the terms of our deal: Just over half our fellowship participants receive
payments, usually in the $300 to $700 range. So if our program prevented gun deaths, there could
be little argument about cost effectiveness.
It did. In the first year of Operation Peacemaker, homicides in Richmond fell to 22 (from 45 in
2009). In five years of our program, through 2014, we have seen the number of homicides in
Richmond, which had averaged 40 a year, more than halved; firearm assaults in general fell by a
similar proportion.
In 2014, we celebrated the lowest number of firearm assaults and homicides in more than four
decades. Richmond recorded a 76 percent reduction in homicides and a 69 percent reduction in
firearm assaults from 2007, when the Office of Neighborhood Safety was created.
In reality, we ve achieved these results not simply by the cash incentive. Our change agents work
with about 150 clients a year, at a cost of about $20,000 per person, which pays for daily
mentoring, coaching and companionship. By comparison, it costs our city about $200,000 to hire

How Does Colonel Cathcart Use Satire In Catch 22
Power is without a doubt the one thing that divides people from one another. Catch 22 (book)
relates tremendously to the thought of power in the wrong hands. Many characters abuse this to
their own self greed to achieve their own personal goals. Without paying attention to how it
could affect the environment around him or her. The setting of the book takes place near the
end of World War II, the characters in the story are mostly soldiers and officers during that time.
High ranking officers are the big shots giving out orders, while the low ranking officers take and
do. Colonel Cathcart is one that treats power to his own selfish desire, not in any way evil, but
for the greater good that he thinks is the best option. His desire for the greater good of the United
States, is to raise the amount of flying missions to eighty five. Reason being is that he doesn t
want anybody to go home and wants a little joke here and there. However, some characters like
Yossarian don t see this as a fit rule to apprehend, he reaches the certain number to go home, yet
Colonel Cathcart proceeds to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The genre of the novel is set to dark comedy, a sense that the humor is deeply scary to think about
but funny in a way that you have to process all the bad stuff out. It does still reflect the theme
upon power in a comedic fashion that appeals to the reader s understanding. Yossarian is sent
with his friends to hear a preliminary briefing about another flight mission. To this, their plan is
to bomb an innocent village to roadblock a road so the Germans have a delay in their planning.
However, Colonel Cathcart really wants to just bomb the village to have a good aerial
photograph to send to a HQ, they don t care about the roadblock (Heller 327 328). As recalled
before, the top dogs just want to look good and don t care about the environment they seem to

Simulation Of Double Slope Solar Essay
SIMULATION OF DOUBLE SLOPE SOLAR STILL AT DIFFFERENT INCLINATIONS USING
CFD
Abstract
Solar distillation system proves to be a good and cost effective method for water purification. The
function of solar still is to produce fresh water based on evaporation process, utilizing the solar
radiation as the source of energy. Solar still is a device which uses process of solar distillation. A 3
dimensional solar still is modelled at 3 different glass cover inclinations and is brought into Ansys
cfd where temperature distribution in the solar still over a period of time due to direct solar
irradiation over a particular location is calculated.
Introduction Distillation is a process which is used to obtain fresh water from salty, brackish or
contaminated water. Without fresh water human life is not possible even industries and agriculture
also need fresh water. Earlier fresh water is easily available from rivers, lakes and ponds in plenty.
Now it s becoming scarce because of industrialization. Growing population leads to assumption that
by the year 2025 two thirds of the population will lack sufficient fresh water. The areas with the
water shortages are the warm, arid countries in the northern Africa and southern Asia within the
latitudes 15 35ВєN. Sunlight is one of several forms of heat energy that can be used to power the
process of water purification. It is difficult to use solar thermal energy in large scale plants because
of low thermal efficiency and considerable land area

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Experimentation
Animal experimentation has been a controversial subject for decades. Millions of animals have
been killed in United States laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity driven
experiments, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Animal experimentation has proven
to be an imprecise way of research and practices in animal cruelty. There are alternatives to animal
testingthat have been proven more accurate, but because of tradition these alternatives are
overlooked by many. The three R s of animal testing, reduction, refinement, and replacement, should
be implemented. The testing of animals does not have enough beneficial results to deem it
necessary. Many drugs proven safe for animals have been proven harmful to humans in human
trials. In order to make experimentation more accurate, scientists should rely on human cells and
carefully conducted clinical trials with humans (as cited in Thomas, 2009, p. 95).
Stop Animal Experimentation
Animal experimentation has become a very controversial subject since the development of more
advanced technology. Estimates of the number of animals used each year for experiments in United
States laboratories range from seventeen to seventy million (as cited in Animal Friends Croatia ,
2009, p. 15). Animal experimentation, which is also known as animal testing, is experiments that
use non human animals that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological
system under study. Although animal

Introduction And Our Current Business Value Chain
1. Introduction and our Current Business Value Chain
Value chain is defined as the set of activities that a firm operating in a specific industry performs
in order to deliver a valuable product or service to the market. Michael Porter first described this
concept in the 1980 s, and many businesses focus on their specific activities based on this idea.
Due to the nature of our business and the industry we are in, it is clear that our restaurant s value
chain consists of small business, consumer based activities. The primary activities in our value
chain are the purchases of raw foods, inventory control and restaurant operations, logistics, customer
service, marketing, and sales. The support activities are our accounting, finance, and systems
support departments, as well as the legal, environmental, and safety requirements me must adhere
to. The process of hiring, firing, and training is important in our human resource department also.
All of the above listed activities have an equal degree of importance when it comes to delivering
valuable food and service in our restaurant. We need the capital to buy high quality raw foods in
order to satisfy our customers, the staff, both front and back of house, to cook the meals and serve
them in a timely matter; as well as the systems support to monitor our revenues and table turnover.
As for the primary activities, we must purchase our raw foods and get them delivered in a
reasonable price and time, control the level of inventory so

Role Of Education In Education
Future educators have many responsibilities such as organising and taking part in school events,
working with parents, grading, and most importantly delivering the lesson to where the student
will understand. Taking part in school activities helps the teacher get more involved, as to
helping the students that school is fun and has more is it that just learning school lessons. There
will be lessons on how to learn to be social with other classmates. Working with parents is a very
important part in the child s development. The parent getting involved will reassure that the child
is not alone in such a critical stage of learning as will will give them a better chance to bond
together. A teacher will as will spend long hours grading and trying to view the child s
perspective on why they answered as they did. Doing so helps the teacher see what new ways
she may be able to help the child learn and comprehend the new lesson that is being presented to
them. This will show if the way that the lesson is being explained to the children, is an effective
way of doing so. ( Page 1. https://www.prospects.ac.uk./job profiles/primary school teacher)
Besides having specific responsibilities, teachers should have specific skills to be able to do the
job. A specific skills that teachers should have is creativity because teachers should be able to
create different activities to attract the different learning styles of their students besides modifying
it for their needs. It doesn t hurt also to

What Is Electromyography Is A Method For Evaluate Levels...
Abstract: Electromyography is a method to evaluate levels of muscular activity. When a muscle
fiber contracts, an action potential is generated and this circulates along the muscular fibers. In
electromyography, electrodes are connected to the skin and the electrical activity of muscles is
measured and graph is plotted. The surface electromyographysignals selected during the muscular
activity are interfaced with a system. The EMG signals from individual suffering from Neuropathy
and healthy individual, so obtained, are processed and analyzed using signal processing techniques.
This project includes the investigation and interpretation of EMG signals of healthy and
Neuropathic individuals using MATLAB. The prospective utilization of this study is in developing
the prosthetic device for the people with Neuropathic disability.
Keywords: EMG, action potential, MATLAB, Neuropathy.
I.INTRODUCTION

Kate Kid 1984 Movie Analysis
You re the Best, Around
Wax on, Wax off (Karate Kid 1984). Put the Jacket on, now take it off, hang it up. (Karate Kid
2010). Both of these movies introduce an underdog, new to his environment. They are harassed by
bullies and taken under the wing by the well mannered, black belted handyman. Both the original
Karate Kid, released in 1984, and the 2010 remake made an impact on our culture, and they both
taught us lessons about judgement, bullying, and stereotyping.
In the 1984 film, our young hero, Daniel LaRusso, moves to New Jersey with his mother. Likewise,
our younger hero from the 2010 remake, Dre Parker, moves from Detroit to Beijing for his mother s
work. Both attend school and seek acceptance from their peers. Additionally, both boys live near
their respective handyman, Mr. Miyagi in the original, and Mr. Han in the remake. These men act
as the only father figures throughout the films. These unique settings created a mysterious
surrounding for our underdog heroes which presenting new challenges and endeavors..
The underdog story is told differently in both films. Daniel LaRusso is a charming, relatable kid
who struggles to fit in. Dre Parker manages to keep his wits about him even as he crosses into an
entirely different country and culture. Each of the misunderstood boys had a mentor who guided
them through the course of each movie. Essentially, both Mr. Miyagi and Mr. Han play the same
role, but where they differ is in backstory and attitude. Mr. Miyagi is a

audi s style could be described as a mix of Art Nouveau and his own unique organic style, which
was influenced by shapes and structures from the natural world. One of Gaudi s most impressive
and beautiful buildings is Casa BatllГі. GaudГ designed the building for Josep BatllГі, a wealthy
aristocrat, as an upmarket home. He had asked Gaudi to tear down the old one to reconstruct a new
one. GaudГ managed to convince BattlГі to remodel the existing building instead of tearing it
down, and between 1904 and 1906 he redesigned the facade and roof, added an extra floor and
completely remodeled the interior. This building clearly illustrated Gaudi s work. His use of

This work of Gaudi I believe is a clear example of an Artist s vision. Gaudi incorporated his
creativeness into a building produced a concrete example of his vision. To me it feels like this
building you might see in Disneyland, but here it is on a normal street of Barcelona erected amongst
other buildings. Yet it questions our imagination. The curves, the colour scheme that is used, the
use of bones, it is simply captivating! This is what Gaudi s work is about to create an impact on
its viewers. I really appreciate this work of his because he created something completely different,
something out of the ordinary.
Another one of Gaudi s famous work is the Sagrada Familia. Though it is unfinished it is still on
of the famous attractions in Barcelona. Whilst the building was actually started by Francisco de
Paula Villar, It was Antonio Gaudi who took over in 1884 by finishing the underground crypt that
Villar had begun to give Sagrada Familia a unique twist and a revolutionary design. Gaudi
incorporates his religious side into this building.
The church was designed to have a total length of 110 m, and a height of 45 m, with twelve
towers between 100 and 115 m high. The ground plan is a Gothic basilical plan in the shape of a
Latin cross, with five naves connecting with a transept that connects to three naves, apse, and

Dallas is one of the largest and most developed cities in the state of Texas in the United States.
Dallas is the 4th largest city in the United States because of its downtown location, and is also the

one of the top ten cities in the United States. The city is located in the middle of a desert and is

Dallas is famous for its cowboys. The history of cowboys is quite interesting. The ancestors of
cowboys are not Americans, but Mexicans in North America. Even if we go back further, we see
that their ancestors are from Spain to North America.

Longfellow Vs Keats
Both poems are sonnets that focus on early death; however, each poet displays different emotions
for life and death in their poems. On the one hand, Keats displays an optimistic view of life, but is
contemptuous towards death since it will mark an unwanted end to his artistic, romantic, and
countless other endeavors. On the other, Longfellow distrusts life and fears death. As an indicator of
these contrasting sentiments, the poets not only use significantly different types of poems, but they
also differ in their rhetorical devices purposes in the shared iambic pentameter structure. In
particular, they use imagery, diction, mechanical devices and metaphors in varying extents and
purposes. Keats Elizabethan sonnet contains vivid, buoyant imagery... Show more content on

In both openings, each poet recognizes the ephemeral element of life. Keats fears that he may
cease to be, while Longfellow reflects, half of life is gone (Keats 1; Longfellow 1). Through
diction, this trend becomes evident. For example, Keats uses the words, Huge cloudy symbols,
and shadows, indicating almightiness and transcendence (Keats 6, 8). Longfellow too
recognizes nature s power, going even further, capitalizing the words Past and Death
(Longfellow 9, 14). Such capitalization is done out of respect for the power of these words, and
further, as a reiteration that the present is determined by the past and the future. In effect,
Longfellow realizes that the present is the morphed version of the past and the future, and thus
gives no capitalization, or significance, to it. Keats experiences the opposite. He very much
endorses the attitude of carpe diem, trying to move on from the past only to be greeted by the
grim face of death. By the end of the poem, each poet describes similar circumstances. Keats
approaches a shore, while Longfellow ascends a hill to contemplate life. They differ, however, as
Keats views a wide world replete with literary repute and love, but realizes it is nothingness in the
bigger picture (Keats 13 14). Thus, he pursues what remains of his opportunities, despite knowing
his human insignificance. Conversely, Longfellow sees the gleaming lights of an idyllic past with a
waterfall of death that will haunt him now and what remains of his future (Longfellow

broken. Though this is true, peace is not all encompassing. Not only can peace can be found in
some parts of life and lacking in others, but peace has many types that affect each part of daily
life. A Separate Peace by John Knowles explores the relationship between external and internal
peace. When external societal peace is disrupted people become willing to commit a kind of
suicide by breaking the rulesin an effort to obtain inner peace. Daily life is heavily affected by
different forms of peace. External societal peace, is the peace that is not in an individual s control.
For example, war, conflicts in relationships, and random acts of violence are $$#Break#$$ Many
rules that people are forced to follow violate their own personal values and morals. As a result,
when external peace is disrupted people decide that it is alright to add to the disruption if their
values would be upheld through doing so. The text states, Phineas didn t really dislike West
Point in particular or authority in general, but just considered authority the necessary evil
against which happiness was achieved by reaction, the backboard which returned all the insults
he threw at it (11). This quote contradicts the statement that breaking the rules can enable
someone to obtain inner peace because it states that authority returns some sort of punishment
any time you break the rules. This is true, and therefore supports the idea that breaking the rules
is a kind of suicide. In some cases the suicide can be literal. For example, Phineas insists on
jumping off the tree everyday to cope with the war. Surviving the jump everyday causes him to
achieve inner peace because it is a way of getting over his fear of going to the war. This is a
literal suicide because as shown later in the book the jump from the tree is very dangerous and
ultimately killed him. Breaking the rules can also be a metaphorical suicide because even
though internal peace is being met it causes other external peace to be disrupted. According to
Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of suicide it the act of taking one s own life
voluntarily as well as the ruin of one s own interests. Gene breaks the rules and goes to the beach
with Phineas for a night. This is a metaphorical; kind of suicide because it is against his own
interests when he fails his test the next day. Overall, this illustrates how breaking the rules leads to

The Biblical Allusion of Lot s Wife in Slaughterhouse-Five...
Kurt Vonnegut s novel Slaughterhouse Five, uses the biblical allusion of Lot s wife looking back
on the destroyed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to parallel the story of Billy Pilgrim during the war
and his experience after, when he returns to the United States. Although the reference is brief, it has
profound implications to the portrayal of America during World War II, especially the bombing of
Dresden. Although Lot s wife s action dooms her to turn into a pillar of salt, the narrator
emphasizes her choice to indicate the importance of being compassionate and having hindsight.
Ultimately, Slaughterhouse Five critiques the American social attitude to disregard the unjust
nature of its actions in World War II. Furthermore, Vonnegut s

This attitude refuses to place blame on American government or soldiers for the massacre of
over a hundred thousand civilians. It makes slaughter socially acceptable and necessary. The
attitude, championed by Rumfoord, does more than ignore the value of those lives lost, it
refuses to acknowledge the right of the soldiers who participated and witnessed firebombing to
receive an explanation for their actions. And, in both cases, innocents die or are unable to move
forward from the event. The allusion of Sodom and Gomorrah to Dresden is not a perfect
parallel. God punishes Sodom and Gomorrah because the whole city teems with corruption and
sinfulness, while Dresden represents the Nazi empire, but is not an inherently sinful place.
However, the death of each implicates a loss of innocence. The Nazism is evil, but the people of
Dresden represent a complicated evil. They may be part of the Nazi empire, but they act in a
morally acceptable and socially upstanding manner. This imperfect parallel further gives evidence
that America acts in an evil way, even in combating evil. The novel illustrates this by the industry
located in Dresden: The syrup was enriched with vitamins and minerals. The syrup was for pregnant
women (203). The text offers that Americans kill neither sinners nor heralds of sin, but those

Forgotten. Isolated. Alone. The people of Uganda live in constant fear of one man who has torn

The LRA began in 1986 under the rule of Alice Lakwena and was called the Holy Spirit

and when she was exiled, Joseph Kony took over her movement. Kony formed a new group, with

throughout their existence, but one in particular stands out among the rest. On December 14,
2009 the LRA entered the Haut Uele district of the Makombo area in the Democratic Republic of
Congo ready to kill. Over the course of four days, they attacked ten villages, killing 321 civilians
and abducting over 250 people. At least eighty of the people abducted were children. Those who
died were mostly adult men, and they were found tied to trees where they had been hacked to
death by machetes. Those who lived, were tied up in chains and forced to carry the LRA s
pillaged goods as they marched off to attack more villages. People who did not comply with the
LRA, tried to run away, or walked to slow, were killed. Families were separated and many people
had to watch as their loved ones were killed. The attack on Makombo was one of the largest
massacres committed by the LRA, but it was not the only attack. Dozens of attacks have been
reported in villages near Bangadi and Ngilima and many more have taken place at other locations (

In time of the butterflies Rafael Trujillo, a dictator of Dominican republic said He who doesn t

Cross Gender Dressing
Society plays a role in prescribing appropriate and inappropriate behavior. How a man and a
woman are supposed to dress are unwritten codes of behavior that most people tend to follow.
Cross dressers represent a group that is defiant of established norms as they opt to dress in ways
contrary to their genderassignment. Further controversy surrounds the issue of cross dressing
particularly because there is little consensus on its definition. There is also debate on the
distinction, if any, that exists between transvestism and other similar behaviors performed by men.
There are similarities in some of the behaviors performed by these separate groups. Research has
yet to determine the causes of cross dressing linking it to home, parental,... Show more content on

Most of the time, the feelings experienced were those of comfort and security. A Very extensive
documentation exists to show that cross dressing often begins in early boyhood and persist into the
adolescent years for the majority of adult transsexuals and transvestites (qtd. in Docter 55).
Government is another forum where the role of power is rampant, specifically in legislating laws
to control, restrict, and punish behaviors deemed deviant by society. The power of legislation is
conveyed many times in this statement regarding the matter of biology in homosexuality. If
homosexuality were found to be an immutable trait, like skin color, then laws criminalizing
homosexual sex might be overturned. Same sex marriage, job protection, anti discrimination in
housing laws all these could hinge on the redefinition of homosexuality as biologically caused
rather than socially and culturally chosen (Garber, p. 225). This statement brings up several ways
of exerting control over deviant behavior (linked to a particular group of people): by making the
behavior a punishable, criminal act; by discrimination through laws; by not granting protection of
rights; and by prohibiting the recognition of same sex marriage (as if by not recognizing it, it isn t
really there).
The reinforcement of gender roles and boundaries through societal constructs is shown in
Woodhouse s discussion of transvestites

Gender and Power Relations in Browning’s Porphria’s
Lover...
Gender and Power Relations in Browning s Porphria s Lover and My Last Duchess
Robert Browning provides a critical view of gender and power relations in his dramatic
monologues Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess. The dramatic monologue, as S.S. Curry has
written, reveals the struggle in the depths of the soul (11). Browning delves into the minds of
characters to show their conceptions of women and ideas of power. He explores the mental
processes of the characters, and invites readers to question societal ideas of power and gender. The
mental pathologies of the speakers is emphasized, which forces readers to examine the sanity of
their own notions of gender dynamics.
In the Victorian age, the idea of separate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In men, in general, sexual desire is inherent and spontaneous whereas in the other sex, the desire is
dormant, if not non existent, till excited (457). Greg s terminology is extremely power laden.
Spontaneous has the connotation of energy and activity, whereas dormant and victim imply
inactivity. An important concept is the assumption that men, the coarser sex, act on women, the
weaker sex (457).
Like prostitutes, the women in Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess also violate traditional
gender roles. For that reason, the men take it upon themselves to bring the power relation back to
that of convention, where men are bearers of power and have control in relationships. The means
by which this power reversion is accomplished, however, are subject to examination.
Foucault s theories are helpful in understanding Porphyria s Lover. In the poem, the male
character, who is the narrator, perceives himself to elicit a confession from the woman. Inherent in
the idea of confession are power dynamics. Confession is ...a ritual that unfolds within a power
relationship, for one does not confess without the presence (or virtual presence) of a partner who is
not simply the interlocutor but the authority who requires the confession... (Foucault 61).
Confession is a socially constructed process in which it is necessary to have a mediator as well as a
confessor.

Genetically Modified Organisms And The Environment
While America is excited about genetically modified organisms and think that they are god sent
other countries are weary of them and think that they are dangerous. While many other countries
label genetically modified organisms because they think that people should have a choice whether
or not they want to consume them America believes that their people should not have to know
therefore taking the people s choice away and making the decision for them. There have been
studies that have shown that genetically modified organisms have opened doors to new
possibilities, but at the same time have become a danger to humans and the environment. Although
some may think that genetic engineering is progress for humanity others think America should not
produce and sell genetically modified organisms because it is unsafe for human consumption, and it
is harmful to the environment.
Genetically modified organisms are living organisms that have been artificially manipulated in a
laboratory through genetic engineering. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations
of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional
crossbreeding methods. Genetic engineering works because all genes have the same basic structure
and work in the same way. Thus, they are in a sense interchangeable (Yount). Genetically modified
organisms are uncontrollable, and dangerous to humans and the environment and humans should

Dionysian Analysis
The Greek demigod Dionysus represents at times the introduction of wine and art, and a balance
between the male and female. Through music, dancing and drinking, people who followed
Dionysian thinking could attempt to reach a new consciousness. This can be seen as a more
balanced or informed way of seeing life: a way that, in the 60s especially, some attempted to
access through the use of LSD or other drugs. Some said that the visions obtained from LSD
allowed them to reach a new consciousness. Dionysian understanding of life requires a broader
focus on a connected society and the hidden qualities, both good and bad, of human nature. In this
sense, Ginsberg has described in the above quote the best minds of his generation being not those...

One cannot hope to improve or to control one s negative and unproductive impulses if one is not
conscious of them. A good example of this is found in business related diversity training. It is
not possible due to human nature to extinguish all bias and prejudgment in society. In fact, some
kinds of bias or prejudgment are very productive such as our instinctive reaction to stay away
from a dark stranger in a dark alleyway. We have judged him without truly knowing him, but
there is a social benefit to that kind of judgment. And we all have our biases. The best way to
avoid letting our biases harm others, however, is to develop our self awareness. We can protect
ourselves from our own capacity for evil by becoming aware of our own nature. In that way we can

social change from the public (Lundgren McMakin, 2013, p. 221). The public service

ability to become aware of the ways to get help when they are not necessarily in the position to.

Additionally, the PSA appealed to both victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and to
those that may be uneducated about the topic. It shows people that you can get help in a
challenging situation or even help someone else by simply reading between the lines. The women
who initiated the call had variation in both her responses and the rapidness within them. This

Cultural Perspectives On American Expansionist, Colonial...
As Yehuda Berg said, words have energy and power with the ability to help...[and] to harm.
Expanding upon his reflection to see varying social perspectives on American expansionist, colonial
and slave society contexts, one notes that officials of European descent including Meriwether
Lewis, William Clark and John Eliot converted white words and ideas into literal and figurative
terms that they believed Native Americans mutually understood to persuade tribal leaders to adopt
white mores. Accordingly, some Native Americans responded to these jabs of white coercion
through outright resistance while others re enacted white behaviors to receive preferential
treatment from white leaders and gain social influence that had the potential to undermine white
hegemony. Building off of these indigenous efforts to reclaim lost territory, many Southern black
slaves adapted to the ongoing tolerance of church ministries and loopholes in slave masters
restrictions to slightly advance African beliefs atop Christianity and syncretically empower black
rituals. While white expansionists engaged in brief, unbalanced negotiations to judge and then
exploit Native Americans, certain indigenous people broke out of the ongoing Eurocentric decorum
of noble savagery with colonial authorities to pursue sociopolitical agency and many black slaves
interbred Christian and African beliefs to fashion their own religious subculture over time. Thus,

J.G. Ballard s Science Fiction Legacy
Ballard along with many other new wave science fiction writers believed that science fiction should
be taken seriously as a form of literature. In order to fulfill this belief the new wave science fiction
writers began experimenting with language and their style of writing, creating cognitive
estrangement , indicating a kind of alienation or de familiarization effect that they used to separate
postmodern/new wave science fictionfrom traditional/pulp science fiction. Ballard, amongst
many others, is considered one of the forefathers that helped develop the New wave movement
to what we know of it today. Ballard was born in Shanghai in 1930, where he spent the first
fifteen years of his profound life. At the age of sixteen, Ballard interned at a Japanese camp
during World War II and, was deported to England. He attended Cambridge University and
obtained his degree in medicine, and a few years later he sold his first story to New Worlds, a
renowned science fiction magazine, in 1956. He is the author of numerous novels and short story
collections, including Crash, Empire of the Sun and The Atrocity Exhibition. Ballard stepped into
the realm of the new wave movement, early in his career with apocalyptic/post apocalyptic novels
such as The Burning World (1964), The Crystal World (1966) and many others. Ballard was a
writer who challenges easy categorization: even his most speculative books can t be fitted neatly

Henry And Edsel The Creation Of The Ford Empire Summary

Professor Lupo
Bak, Richard. Henry and Edsel: The Creation of the Ford Empire, New Jersey: John Wiley Sons,
2003 The year 1847 can be said to mark the true hardscrabble beginnings of the Henry Ford story.
Bak tells the story of Henry and Edsel Ford and how the Ford Empire was created. Bak talks about
how Henry wanted to build an automobile that Americans would want to buy that was durable,
stabile, and reliable.
In the early life of Henry he left his family s farm to go work in a factory as an apprentice with
the Michigan Car Company when he was seventeen years old. His father William Ford wasn t
happy with his son decision to leave the farm, but he thought it would be good for Henry to see
the life in the dirty, hectic confines of the city. Pg(10) After three years in the city Henry returned
to the farm but took a job working on steam engines for trains, later on Henry would get the same
concept to make the Model T car. Henry Ford was hired as an engineer with the Edison

he needed to understand the nascent science of electricity. On November 6, 1893 Henry and his

Under the new health care reform law over 47 million women will have access to women s

In We Didn t Start The Fire Billy Joel is talking about the important events though his childhood,

to the events. All the events that happened In We Didn t Start The Fire , really influenced the
younger generations. It really changed the younger generations view point on fashion/modeling and
the outcome of different situations.
In We Didn t Start The FireBilly Joel s is telling the younger generation their lesson in history
that people didn t by not putting the blame on any particular person, place, or thing. In the song
he says we didn t start the fire it was always burning it was always burning to the worlds

But he s also saying that he hopes that we make it better throughout time with the younger

teach and the younger gen has learned from. The person who had the most impact to me is
Marilyn monroe. Why Marilyn Monroe? To me she influenced a lot of the youth today in wanting
to be a model in stuff like that for example, to me like the kardashians with what she did with her

Governmental Effects On Trade Policies
As a business owner the responsibilities are enormous and there is a ton of planning. Having a
business I will be taking into consideration an extreme chance of globalization and trade in
context. Now there will be tariffs, business and government now getting involved in my
company one way or another. All of this brings to thought why the United States saves part of
the economic policies and procedures. In this assignment I will be talking about the
governmental effects on trade policies and how they are used in different businesses. Also
included will be how doing business in other countries might influence company owners. Does
NAFTA have any effect on automobile industries and the trade agreement? Some educational
information I found was that the US is 238 years old and in the past 193 or so years the United
States has had a foreign trade and global economic policy in place. Several things have been
altered over and over again since the original policy had been written. The US focused more on
how the government and businesses could improve on the domestic economy no matter what was
happening in other countries. The Great Depression and World War II along with the country s
population wanted to create less trade obstacles and manage the world s financial structure. Free
tradein the US has shown that it is progressing in the monetary welfare and creating diplomatic
interactions between other states. So, now that free trade has resulted in global trade there is

The World s Fair At The Columbian Exposition
Classical architecture, ferris wheels, 1500 pound chocolate bars. These new, unheard of attractions
at the Columbian Exposition attracted millions of unsuspecting, innocent guests to the preying
ground of the narcissistic Dr. H. H. Holmes. Chicago, Illinois, the host of the 1983 World s Fair,
was home to this sadistic serial killerwho attracted his prey using his education and occupation as a
means to gain trust from new, unsuspecting travelers from the 46 nations who participated in the
exposition. For three years, Chicago prepared for the exposition, building new architecture and
creating new inventions to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of Columbus s discovery of
America; the doctor had the same idea, and so he built his own Castle with strange, personal
gadgets attached. The presence of the Columbian Exposition in Chicago gave Dr. Holmes a means
to cunningly lure victims into his death chamber of a home. holmes background
Dr. Holmes was an infamous con artist and serial killer. Born as Herman Mudgett, Dr. Holmes,
experimented on pets and other common forest animals. He tortured these animals, dissecting them
while they were still alive, practicing and increasing his knowledge on how long a living animal
could survive with the excruciating pain deriving from Henry s torture. As an adult, Henry

human display skeletons in his way, terrifying him. Therapists and the

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Essay
Have you ever been around someone who seems arrogant? It may not be just arrogance, that
individual may have a Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD. Narcissus, a Greek mythological
character, fell in love with his reflection in the water and could never pull himself away, so he
ended up dying right beside the water after a while (Marcovitz 1). Narcissismbecame known as
being self centered and was developed after this Greek myth (Marcovitz 1). This disorder affects
less than 1% of the American population and it occurs more in men than women (Thomas 1).

Narcissists ruin the bonds that kept the relationships together creating negative impacts on their
social, family, and work life (Cherry 1). Narcissists create unrealistic goals and images of
themselves, clouding their thought process and reasoning (Nakate 1). The behavioral issues can
generate conflict with the people who are really close to them. This personality disorder can be
caused by how the child was raised and their own personal feelings. A person with a low self
esteem is the most common reason why narcissism begins (Thomas 1). If they feel uncomfortable
or inferior in a situation a narcissist will immediately beef up their image and self worth to make
them feel superior again (Thomas 1). Narcissists become very defensive when people question
their accomplishments or talents because they have to try and keep their ego and image safe
(Thomas 1). Another aspect that contributes to narcissism is the way the parents raised the child.
Permissive parenting encourages the child to rely completely on themselves, so they have to be
independent (Thomas 1). With this type of parenting there usually are not any guidelines or rules
for the kid to follow so they would eventually develop the

Why Bother By Michael Pollan Analysis
In Michael Pollan s article Why Bother? he discusses how climate change is a serious threat to
humanity and needs to be addressed immediately. Pollan begins to discuss possible solutions but
also realizes that these solutions may not be easily achieved. There is no way to eliminate people
who make a conscious effort to help the advancement of climate change, but it is still important for
others to attempt to make changes to help save the environment. The famous economist, Adam
Smith, promoted the idea the division of labor has given us many of the blessings of civilization
and about the role the invisible hand plays in the supply and demand of the production of goods.
Although these goods are produced under specialization, the production of a good by a single entity
in order to promote efficiency, there is still the problem of human want for an unlimited amount of
commodities while still taking into account scarcity.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The fourth largest electric utility company in the United States and the largest electric utility in
Florida is the FPL Group, which formed in 1925 from the consolidation of several gas and electric
companies. FPL as a company continued to grow after 1925 because the ever increasing Florida
population demanded more and more electricity. This trend continued until the 1970s when
operating problems, and the rising cost of fuel and construction, caused a reduction of the company
s profitability. To address this issue, then Chairman Marshall McDonald, decided to make four

The fear in cutting dividends though always is in the hands of the shareholders, where their fears
could cause a large drop in stock price.
The four options for dividend disbursement that FPL has are to first to keep the dividends at the
status quo of 1.6%, second to slower the dividend growth to 1%, third to freeze dividend, and
last to reduce or eliminate the dividend completely. When analyzing the first option, which is
the keep the dividends at an increasing 1.6% per year, exhibit TN 4 shows that dividend payouts
do increase from $468.38 million in 1994 to $499.08 million in 1998 with a resulting negative net
cash after dividends every year till 1997 when cash is $110 million and 1998 when cash is $102
million. The payout ratio however does reduce to 84% by 1998.
The second option available for FPL was to slower the dividend growth to 1%. Analysis of
exhibit TN 4 here shows that dividends grow from $465.61 million in 1994 to $484.52 million
in 1998. The resulting negative net cash flows are still eminent in years 1994 1996 but become
positive in 1997 with $121 million and 1998 with $116 million. The payout ratio is this option does
become closer to the desired 80% by 1998 when the payout ratio is 81%
The third option was to freeze the dividend at $2.48 per share. The dividend payout stayed constant
at $461 million from 1994 to 1998. With this, the

An Essay About Eleanor Roosevelt
Do what you feel in your heart to be right for you ll be criticized anyway. You ll be damned if you
do, and damned if you don t. This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt is a phrase that she lived by her
entire life. She was a woman trying to speak up for those that did not have a voice, fearing they
would be criticized for speaking up. She continued in her selfless journey of helping others, even
more so when she became married to Franklin Roosevelt, the future president. During his time as
president, Eleanor became even more influenced in the lives of others as she helped Eleanor
Roosevelt, an inspiring woman that helped many while performing the part of First Lady, started
out with a rough life but ended it with a lasting legacy.
Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884 to a proud mother, who later would be too
ashamed to even look at her. Her mother was Anna Halls Roosevelt, an outstanding beauty and
figure of grace in their society, and Eleanor was just not. She was reminded of this daily as her
mother would always call her granny meaning back then too plain. Though she never let it show, it
had always affected her, making her extremely self conscience. She would feel this way until she
grew older and finally gained confidence when she went to the Academy in London. Her father,

out. Ok now seriously we have to being to analyze the problem. The first thing we want to do is
identify the variables. In this case our variables will be the number of acres of corn and the
amount of wheat that is planted. We will further define them later. Next we have to identify our
objective. In this case we are looking to maximize profits and determine if participation in the
government program will provide him with greater profits than not participating in the program.
Finally we identify the constraints; in our example the constraints are the rotation restrictions: must

possible, however the requirement to have a minimum of 50 acres of wheat ensures that wheat is

remaining land for corn (200 acres) we can calculate the profits expected and compare the two

The Children s Book Watertower By Gary Crew And...
The children s book Watertower, by Gary Crew and illustrated by Steven Woolman, is simple when
individually read in text and illustration, but when placed together becomes unusually complex.
Most eight to twelve year olds who would read this story could find it amusing or entertaining, but
when read by someone older and wiser, they might apply past experiences to form opinions for each
element in reading the illustrations and text individually, then combined. The readeris able to
construct his or her thoughts by observing the small keys in each photo. Some of these keys are
the use of color, setting, expression and focus in the scenery and objects around.
The visuals in this story take the reader to a farm town close to an old, abandoned water tower.
The two characters mainly focused on throughout the illustration are young boys around the age
of ten. The photos showed the two boys vote to go inside the water tower for a swim when one
boys decides to go and stand on top of the tower, leaving his friend inside the eerie water by
himself. When his friend finally come up out of the water, he runs into town, climbs through a
window to get inside a house. During this time you are able to see the boy left at the tower. He
sits beneath a tree waiting and watching for his friend to return. When the boy finally makes it
back to the watertown, the boys decided to both come into town together. A few of these photos

How Is Soma Used In Brave New World
When reading the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, it is unmistakably evident that the
use of stimulants (soma) is the leading source of the society s happiness. Drugs and medicine are
used in both societies in many comparable and contrasting ways. Our soma takes a different form
than it does in Brave New World, but a lot of the results are the same. The most common
similarity between the use of drugs in the two societies is the purpose of the drug is use. This
motive is for escaping reality. In Brave New World, all citizens in the society take soma
whenever they are stressed or emotional. This medication keeps all negative thoughts off a
person s mind, basically creating a blindness to everything around them that is corrupt. Linda,
one of the characters in the book who was from the Brave New World but lived with the savages,
shows a little bit of how soma is used in today s society when she becomes alcohol dependent.
When she no longer had access to soma, she turned to alcohol (also referred to as mescal in the
novel) as an escape from all the atrocious things she had to experience at the savage reservation
(Brave New World 125). In today s society people, especially young people, use alcohol and other
drugs to mask the unhappiness they have in their lives. Teenagers consider... Show more content on

Case Study Analysis Paper 1: A Tale of Two Coaches
Based on our learning from week one of our class, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the
leadership perspectives manifested in both Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski, coaches who have
made significant marks in their field in college basketball. I hope to be able to identify the power
bases both coaches rely upon, as well as whether their actions are more aligned with either a
managerial role or leadership role. In addition, I hope to identify how significant the leadership
traits have influenced their leadership, based on the five factor ... Show more content on

Coach K clearly shows all the traits of agreeableness, which is the extent to which a person is
generous, kind, appreciative, sympathetic, forgiving, and trusting. Also both coaches can be said
to be conscientiousness, as they are efficient, organized, reliable, responsible, and thorough in
their pursuit of excellence. Coach Knight clearly displays neuroticism and his unstable, self
pitying, touchy, anxious, tense, and worrisome attitude comes clearly through as displayed
through rants and berating of his players. I can also agree that both coaches are open to
experience, as their coaching skills although one hundred and eighty degrees apart, do show signs
of introspective, imaginative, insightful, and originality, and both have a wide range of interests
outside of basketball. In conclusion, Although Coach K was originally mentored by Coach
Knight as both a player and as an assistant coach; they both have adopted different styles of
leadership. They appear to be almost polar opposites, yet have both managed to have done well in
their respective field. As the late Emanuel Rohn once said, The challenge of leadership is to be
strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be
proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly . If only Coach Knight had followed this
simple statement, how much further would he have gone?

Was The Transition From Alcohol To Coffee Affected...
Coffee was already popular in the Arab world since the mid 1500s when Europeans smuggled in
coffee beans from an Arab port. The role of coffeehouses as meeting places sources of news was
also adopted by Europeans, and the respectable, intellectual, and non alcoholic environment
associated with coffeehouses helped coffeespread into Britain, Italy and France.
The transition from alcohol to coffee impacted Europe s development because it greatly increased
people s productivity. While alcohol compromised people s ability to think clearly and comprehend
things, caffeine sharpened the drinker s mind and allowed people to stay more alert, and therefore
more productive.
The massive demand for coffee beans created competition between many different

The Most Common And Well Known Variation Of Md Is Duchenne
The most common and well known variation of MD is Duchenne MD (DMD). The person in
history who gets the credit for first studying and publishing details on this type of MD is rather
complicated. The disease is actually named after Gulliaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne.
Duchenne first described his details of the disease in the late 1800s. Since the disease is named
after him, it is highly accepted that he was the first; however, there are many that simply do not
agree on the matter. It has now come to light that a doctor from the United Kingdom named
Edward Meryon actually wrote his own account on the disease a decade before Duchenne. This
type accounts for about half of all MD cases 2. Scott Giles stated that the incidence of DMD is...

The enlarged calf muscle may be the next noticeable trait of a DMD patient. The patient s calf s
look like they have muscle, but this enlargement of the calves is actually fat. This is referred to
as pseudo hypertrophy, and patients with pseudo hypertrophy of the calves usually walk on their
toes due to the contracture. Another initial sign of DMD would be waddling gait 1. This form of
walking looks like a duck in a sense. It is where the alternating steps are overstated and the hips are
elevated more than normal.
Usually once atrophy of the hip musculature is noticed, shoulder weakness in noticed also. Those
inflicted with DMD will also have trouble with overhead activates, and keeping the shoulders
flexed for long periods of time. Scott M. Giles actually lists the following muscles affected by
DMD: Shoulder girdle musculature, pectorals, deltoids, rectus abdominals, gluteals, hamstrings,
and calf muscles 6. DMD patients continue to lose control and strength in their lower extremity
musculature and eventually have so much trouble walking they are confined to a wheelchair.
There is not a set age where this occurs, but the average is around twelve years old. The DMD
muscles involved in eating, drinking, and of the eye are not touched by the disease. They usually
do not have any hearing deficits or stroke disorders 1.

  • 3. Neighborhood Violence Richmond, Calif. IN 2007, this city of about 100,000 people, north of Berkeley, had the dubious distinction of being the ninth most dangerous in America. That year saw a total of 47 homicides. In some neighborhoods, gunfire was almost a daily event. At one point, the City Council considered asking the governor to declare a state of emergency and send in the National Guard. Instead, in 2007, the city created the Office of Neighborhood Safety. (I am the founding director.) Our mission was simple: to tackle this epidemic of gun violence that was killing so many young men, mostly in our minority communities. We modeled our approach on Cure Violence, a community outreach program in Chicago founded by the epidemiologist Gary Slutkin. The Chicago ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The average cost to taxpayers of every gun homicide in America is nearly $400,000. In contrast, the costs of our program were modest. In practice, we have rarely needed to pay the full amount offered under the terms of our deal: Just over half our fellowship participants receive payments, usually in the $300 to $700 range. So if our program prevented gun deaths, there could be little argument about cost effectiveness. It did. In the first year of Operation Peacemaker, homicides in Richmond fell to 22 (from 45 in 2009). In five years of our program, through 2014, we have seen the number of homicides in Richmond, which had averaged 40 a year, more than halved; firearm assaults in general fell by a similar proportion. In 2014, we celebrated the lowest number of firearm assaults and homicides in more than four decades. Richmond recorded a 76 percent reduction in homicides and a 69 percent reduction in firearm assaults from 2007, when the Office of Neighborhood Safety was created. In reality, we ve achieved these results not simply by the cash incentive. Our change agents work with about 150 clients a year, at a cost of about $20,000 per person, which pays for daily mentoring, coaching and companionship. By comparison, it costs our city about $200,000 to hire one new police ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Does Colonel Cathcart Use Satire In Catch 22 Power is without a doubt the one thing that divides people from one another. Catch 22 (book) relates tremendously to the thought of power in the wrong hands. Many characters abuse this to their own self greed to achieve their own personal goals. Without paying attention to how it could affect the environment around him or her. The setting of the book takes place near the end of World War II, the characters in the story are mostly soldiers and officers during that time. High ranking officers are the big shots giving out orders, while the low ranking officers take and do. Colonel Cathcart is one that treats power to his own selfish desire, not in any way evil, but for the greater good that he thinks is the best option. His desire for the greater good of the United States, is to raise the amount of flying missions to eighty five. Reason being is that he doesn t want anybody to go home and wants a little joke here and there. However, some characters like Yossarian don t see this as a fit rule to apprehend, he reaches the certain number to go home, yet Colonel Cathcart proceeds to... To this, their plan is to bomb an innocent village to roadblock a road so the Germans have a delay in their planning. However, Colonel Cathcart really wants to just bomb the village to have a good aerial photograph to send to a HQ, they don t care about the roadblock (Heller 327 328). Simulation Of Double Slope Solar Essay SIMULATION OF DOUBLE SLOPE SOLAR STILL AT DIFFFERENT INCLINATIONS USING CFD Abstract Solar distillation system proves to be a good and cost effective method for water purification. The function of solar still is to produce fresh water based on evaporation process, utilizing the solar radiation as the source of energy. Solar still is a device which uses process of solar distillation. A 3 dimensional solar still is modelled at 3 different glass cover inclinations and is brought into Ansys cfd where temperature distribution in the solar still over a period of time due to direct solar irradiation over a particular location is calculated. Introduction Distillation is a process which is used to obtain fresh water from salty, brackish or contaminated water. Without fresh water human life is not possible even industries and agriculture also need fresh water. Earlier fresh water is easily available from rivers, lakes and ponds in plenty. Now it s becoming scarce because of industrialization. Growing population leads to assumption that by the year 2025 two thirds of the population will lack sufficient fresh water. The areas with the water shortages are the warm, arid countries in the northern Africa and southern Asia within the latitudes 15 35ВєN. • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation has been a controversial subject for decades. Millions of animals have been killed in United States laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity driven experiments, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Animal experimentation has proven to be an imprecise way of research and practices in animal cruelty. There are alternatives to animal testingthat have been proven more accurate, but because of tradition these alternatives are overlooked by many. The three R s of animal testing, reduction, refinement, and replacement, should be implemented. The testing of animals does not have enough beneficial results to deem it necessary. Many drugs proven safe for animals have been proven harmful to humans in human trials. In order to make experimentation more accurate, scientists should rely on human cells and carefully conducted clinical trials with humans (as cited in Thomas, 2009, p. 95). Stop Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation has become a very controversial subject since the development of more advanced technology. Estimates of the number of animals used each year for experiments in United States laboratories range from seventeen to seventy million (as cited in Animal Friends Croatia , 2009, p. 15). Introduction and our Current Business Value Chain Value chain is defined as the set of activities that a firm operating in a specific industry performs in order to deliver a valuable product or service to the market. Michael Porter first described this concept in the 1980 s, and many businesses focus on their specific activities based on this idea. Due to the nature of our business and the industry we are in, it is clear that our restaurant s value chain consists of small business, consumer based activities. The primary activities in our value chain are the purchases of raw foods, inventory control and restaurant operations, logistics, customer service, marketing, and sales. The support activities are our accounting, finance, and systems support departments, as well as the legal, environmental, and safety requirements me must adhere to. The process of hiring, firing, and training is important in our human resource department also. All of the above listed activities have an equal degree of importance when it comes to delivering valuable food and service in our restaurant. We need the capital to buy high quality raw foods in order to satisfy our customers, the staff, both front and back of house, to cook the meals and serve them in a timely matter; as well as the systems support to monitor our revenues and table turnover. When a muscle fiber contracts, an action potential is generated and this circulates along the muscular fibers. In electromyography, electrodes are connected to the skin and the electrical activity of muscles is measured and graph is plotted. The surface electromyographysignals selected during the muscular activity are interfaced with a system. The EMG signals from individual suffering from Neuropathy and healthy individual, so obtained, are processed and analyzed using signal processing techniques. This project includes the investigation and interpretation of EMG signals of healthy and Neuropathic individuals using MATLAB. The prospective utilization of this study is in developing the prosthetic device for the people with Neuropathic disability. Keywords: EMG, action potential, MATLAB, Neuropathy. I.INTRODUCTION Human gait is a periodic activity and a well incorporated effort of brain, nerves and muscles. It is based on the harmonized action of 28 main muscles to manage the trunk and limbs. This action generates the energy required to oppose gravity and thrust the body frontward. All the individuals have different gait [1]. Both of these movies introduce an underdog, new to his environment. They are harassed by bullies and taken under the wing by the well mannered, black belted handyman. Both the original Karate Kid, released in 1984, and the 2010 remake made an impact on our culture, and they both taught us lessons about judgement, bullying, and stereotyping. In the 1984 film, our young hero, Daniel LaRusso, moves to New Jersey with his mother. Likewise, our younger hero from the 2010 remake, Dre Parker, moves from Detroit to Beijing for his mother s work. Both attend school and seek acceptance from their peers. Additionally, both boys live near their respective handyman, Mr. Miyagi in the original, and Mr. Han in the remake. These men act as the only father figures throughout the films. These unique settings created a mysterious surrounding for our underdog heroes which presenting new challenges and endeavors.. The underdog story is told differently in both films. Daniel LaRusso is a charming, relatable kid who struggles to fit in. One of Gaudi s most impressive and beautiful buildings is Casa BatllГі. GaudГ designed the building for Josep BatllГі, a wealthy aristocrat, as an upmarket home. He had asked Gaudi to tear down the old one to reconstruct a new one. GaudГ managed to convince BattlГі to remodel the existing building instead of tearing it down, and between 1904 and 1906 he redesigned the facade and roof, added an extra floor and completely remodeled the interior. This building clearly illustrated Gaudi s work. His use of flowing organic lines are evident and can be seen in my details in the structure.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The curves, the colour scheme that is used, the use of bones, it is simply captivating! This is what Gaudi s work is about to create an impact on its viewers. I really appreciate this work of his because he created something completely different, something out of the ordinary. Another one of Gaudi s famous work is the Sagrada Familia. Though it is unfinished it is still on of the famous attractions in Barcelona. Whilst the building was actually started by Francisco de Paula Villar, It was Antonio Gaudi who took over in 1884 by finishing the underground crypt that Villar had begun to give Sagrada Familia a unique twist and a revolutionary design. Gaudi incorporates his religious side into this building. The church was designed to have a total length of 110 m, and a height of 45 m, with twelve towers between 100 and 115 m high. • 20. Longfellow Vs Keats Both poems are sonnets that focus on early death; however, each poet displays different emotions for life and death in their poems. On the one hand, Keats displays an optimistic view of life, but is contemptuous towards death since it will mark an unwanted end to his artistic, romantic, and countless other endeavors. On the other, Longfellow distrusts life and fears death. As an indicator of these contrasting sentiments, the poets not only use significantly different types of poems, but they also differ in their rhetorical devices purposes in the shared iambic pentameter structure. In particular, they use imagery, diction, mechanical devices and metaphors in varying extents and purposes. Keats Elizabethan sonnet contains vivid, buoyant imagery... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In both openings, each poet recognizes the ephemeral element of life. Keats fears that he may cease to be, while Longfellow reflects, half of life is gone (Keats 1; Longfellow 1). Through diction, this trend becomes evident. For example, Keats uses the words, Huge cloudy symbols, and shadows, indicating almightiness and transcendence (Keats 6, 8). Longfellow too recognizes nature s power, going even further, capitalizing the words Past and Death (Longfellow 9, 14). Such capitalization is done out of respect for the power of these words, and further, as a reiteration that the present is determined by the past and the future. In effect, Longfellow realizes that the present is the morphed version of the past and the future, and thus gives no capitalization, or significance, to it. Keats experiences the opposite. He very much endorses the attitude of carpe diem, trying to move on from the past only to be greeted by the grim face of death. By the end of the poem, each poet describes similar circumstances. Keats approaches a shore, while Longfellow ascends a hill to contemplate life. They differ, however, as Keats views a wide world replete with literary repute and love, but realizes it is nothingness in the bigger picture (Keats 13 14). Thus, he pursues what remains of his opportunities, despite knowing his human insignificance. Conversely, Longfellow sees the gleaming lights of an idyllic past with a waterfall of death that will haunt him now and what remains of his future (Longfellow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Separate Peace Theme Law and order is a synonym for peace; however often to obtain peace law and order must be broken. Though this is true, peace is not all encompassing. Not only can peace can be found in some parts of life and lacking in others, but peace has many types that affect each part of daily life. A Separate Peace by John Knowles explores the relationship between external and internal peace. When external societal peace is disrupted people become willing to commit a kind of suicide by breaking the rulesin an effort to obtain inner peace. Daily life is heavily affected by different forms of peace. External societal peace, is the peace that is not in an individual s control. For example, war, conflicts in relationships, and random acts of violence are $$#Break#$$ Many rules that people are forced to follow violate their own personal values and morals. As a result, when external peace is disrupted people decide that it is alright to add to the disruption if their values would be upheld through doing so. The text states, Phineas didn t really dislike West Point in particular or authority in general, but just considered authority the necessary evil against which happiness was achieved by reaction, the backboard which returned all the insults he threw at it (11). This quote contradicts the statement that breaking the rules can enable someone to obtain inner peace because it states that authority returns some sort of punishment any time you break the rules. This is true, and therefore supports the idea that breaking the rules is a kind of suicide. In some cases the suicide can be literal. For example, Phineas insists on jumping off the tree everyday to cope with the war. Surviving the jump everyday causes him to achieve inner peace because it is a way of getting over his fear of going to the war. This is a literal suicide because as shown later in the book the jump from the tree is very dangerous and ultimately killed him. Breaking the rules can also be a metaphorical suicide because even though internal peace is being met it causes other external peace to be disrupted. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of suicide it the act of taking one s own life voluntarily as well as the ruin of one s own interests. Gene breaks the rules and goes to the beach with Phineas for a night. This is a metaphorical; kind of suicide because it is against his own interests when he fails his test the next day. Kurt Vonnegut s novel Slaughterhouse Five, uses the biblical allusion of Lot s wife looking back on the destroyed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to parallel the story of Billy Pilgrim during the war and his experience after, when he returns to the United States. Although the reference is brief, it has profound implications to the portrayal of America during World War II, especially the bombing of Dresden. Although Lot s wife s action dooms her to turn into a pillar of salt, the narrator emphasizes her choice to indicate the importance of being compassionate and having hindsight. Ultimately, Slaughterhouse Five critiques the American social attitude to disregard the unjust nature of its actions in World War II. Furthermore, Vonnegut s ... The attitude, championed by Rumfoord, does more than ignore the value of those lives lost, it refuses to acknowledge the right of the soldiers who participated and witnessed firebombing to receive an explanation for their actions. And, in both cases, innocents die or are unable to move forward from the event. The allusion of Sodom and Gomorrah to Dresden is not a perfect parallel. God punishes Sodom and Gomorrah because the whole city teems with corruption and sinfulness, while Dresden represents the Nazi empire, but is not an inherently sinful place. However, the death of each implicates a loss of innocence. The Nazism is evil, but the people of Dresden represent a complicated evil. They may be part of the Nazi empire, but they act in a morally acceptable and socially upstanding manner. This imperfect parallel further gives evidence that America acts in an evil way, even in combating evil. How a man and a woman are supposed to dress are unwritten codes of behavior that most people tend to follow. Further controversy surrounds the issue of cross dressing particularly because there is little consensus on its definition. Government is another forum where the role of power is rampant, specifically in legislating laws to control, restrict, and punish behaviors deemed deviant by society. The power of legislation is conveyed many times in this statement regarding the matter of biology in homosexuality. If homosexuality were found to be an immutable trait, like skin color, then laws criminalizing homosexual sex might be overturned. Same sex marriage, job protection, anti discrimination in housing laws all these could hinge on the redefinition of homosexuality as biologically caused rather than socially and culturally chosen (Garber, p. 225). This statement brings up several ways of exerting control over deviant behavior (linked to a particular group of people): by making the behavior a punishable, criminal act; by discrimination through laws; by not granting protection of rights; and by prohibiting the recognition of same sex marriage (as if by not recognizing it, it isn t really there). The dramatic monologue, as S.S. Curry has written, reveals the struggle in the depths of the soul (11). Browning delves into the minds of characters to show their conceptions of women and ideas of power. He explores the mental processes of the characters, and invites readers to question societal ideas of power and gender. The mental pathologies of the speakers is emphasized, which forces readers to examine the sanity of their own notions of gender dynamics. In the Victorian age, the idea of separate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In men, in general, sexual desire is inherent and spontaneous whereas in the other sex, the desire is dormant, if not non existent, till excited (457). Greg s terminology is extremely power laden. Spontaneous has the connotation of energy and activity, whereas dormant and victim imply inactivity. An important concept is the assumption that men, the coarser sex, act on women, the weaker sex (457). Like prostitutes, the women in Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess also violate traditional gender roles. For that reason, the men take it upon themselves to bring the power relation back to that of convention, where men are bearers of power and have control in relationships. The means by which this power reversion is accomplished, however, are subject to examination. Foucault s theories are helpful in understanding Porphyria s Lover. In the poem, the male character, who is the narrator, perceives himself to elicit a confession from the woman. Inherent in the idea of confession are power dynamics. While many other countries label genetically modified organisms because they think that people should have a choice whether or not they want to consume them America believes that their people should not have to know therefore taking the people s choice away and making the decision for them. There have been studies that have shown that genetically modified organisms have opened doors to new possibilities, but at the same time have become a danger to humans and the environment. Although some may think that genetic engineering is progress for humanity others think America should not produce and sell genetically modified organisms because it is unsafe for human consumption, and it is harmful to the environment. Genetically modified organisms are living organisms that have been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. The next morning it was a Saturday, I got dressed in so comfortable clothes and headed towards the living room. I sat on the light brown colored couch. The couch had different patterns, including the pillows. I picked up the remote and flicked on some TV shows. I was in the middle of watching a show, when My mom and dad come to me with an excited look on their morning faces. The light came in, shining on them like they re on stage. • 33. Dionysian Analysis The Greek demigod Dionysus represents at times the introduction of wine and art, and a balance between the male and female. Through music, dancing and drinking, people who followed Dionysian thinking could attempt to reach a new consciousness. This can be seen as a more balanced or informed way of seeing life: a way that, in the 60s especially, some attempted to access through the use of LSD or other drugs. Some said that the visions obtained from LSD allowed them to reach a new consciousness. In fact, some kinds of bias or prejudgment are very productive such as our instinctive reaction to stay away from a dark stranger in a dark alleyway. We have judged him without truly knowing him, but there is a social benefit to that kind of judgment. And we all have our biases. The best way to avoid letting our biases harm others, however, is to develop our self awareness. We can protect ourselves from our own capacity for evil by becoming aware of our own nature. Expanding upon his reflection to see varying social perspectives on American expansionist, colonial and slave society contexts, one notes that officials of European descent including Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and John Eliot converted white words and ideas into literal and figurative terms that they believed Native Americans mutually understood to persuade tribal leaders to adopt white mores. Accordingly, some Native Americans responded to these jabs of white coercion through outright resistance while others re enacted white behaviors to receive preferential treatment from white leaders and gain social influence that had the potential to undermine white hegemony. Building off of these indigenous efforts to reclaim lost territory, many Southern black slaves adapted to the ongoing tolerance of church ministries and loopholes in slave masters restrictions to slightly advance African beliefs atop Christianity and syncretically empower black rituals. While white expansionists engaged in brief, unbalanced negotiations to judge and then exploit Native Americans, certain indigenous people broke out of the ongoing Eurocentric decorum of noble savagery with colonial authorities to pursue sociopolitical agency and many black slaves interbred Christian and African beliefs to fashion their own religious subculture over time. • 36. J.G. Ballard s Science Fiction Legacy Ballard along with many other new wave science fiction writers believed that science fiction should be taken seriously as a form of literature. In order to fulfill this belief the new wave science fiction writers began experimenting with language and their style of writing, creating cognitive estrangement , indicating a kind of alienation or de familiarization effect that they used to separate postmodern/new wave science fictionfrom traditional/pulp science fiction. Ballard, amongst many others, is considered one of the forefathers that helped develop the New wave movement to what we know of it today. Ballard was born in Shanghai in 1930, where he spent the first fifteen years of his profound life. At the age of sixteen, Ballard interned at a Japanese camp during World War II and, was deported to England. He attended Cambridge University and obtained his degree in medicine, and a few years later he sold his first story to New Worlds, a renowned science fiction magazine, in 1956. He is the author of numerous novels and short story collections, including Crash, Empire of the Sun and The Atrocity Exhibition. Ballard stepped into the realm of the new wave movement, early in his career with apocalyptic/post apocalyptic novels such as The Burning World (1964), The Crystal World (1966) and many others. Raskolnikov isolates himself from society early on in the novel because of his presumptuous mentality and theories. Choat Ken Blanchard College of Business, MGT 600 10 December 2013 Case Study Analysis Paper 1: A Tale of Two Coaches Based on our learning from week one of our class, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the leadership perspectives manifested in both Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski, coaches who have made significant marks in their field in college basketball. I hope to be able to identify the power bases both coaches rely upon, as well as whether their actions are more aligned with either a managerial role or leadership role. In addition, I hope to identify how significant the leadership traits have influenced their leadership, based on the five factor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Coach K clearly shows all the traits of agreeableness, which is the extent to which a person is generous, kind, appreciative, sympathetic, forgiving, and trusting. Also both coaches can be said to be conscientiousness, as they are efficient, organized, reliable, responsible, and thorough in their pursuit of excellence. Coach Knight clearly displays neuroticism and his unstable, self pitying, touchy, anxious, tense, and worrisome attitude comes clearly through as displayed through rants and berating of his players. I can also agree that both coaches are open to experience, as their coaching skills although one hundred and eighty degrees apart, do show signs of introspective, imaginative, insightful, and originality, and both have a wide range of interests outside of basketball. In conclusion, Although Coach K was originally mentored by Coach Knight as both a player and as an assistant coach; they both have adopted different styles of leadership. They appear to be almost polar opposites, yet have both managed to have done well in their respective field. As the late Emanuel Rohn once said, The challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly . If only Coach Knight had followed this simple statement, how much further would he have gone? REFERENCES: Rohn, R. (n.d.). Qualities of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The person in history who gets the credit for first studying and publishing details on this type of MD is rather complicated. The disease is actually named after Gulliaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne. Duchenne first described his details of the disease in the late 1800s. Since the disease is named after him, it is highly accepted that he was the first; however, there are many that simply do not agree on the matter. It has now come to light that a doctor from the United Kingdom named Edward Meryon actually wrote his own account on the disease a decade before Duchenne. This type accounts for about half of all MD cases 2. Scott Giles stated that the incidence of DMD is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The enlarged calf muscle may be the next noticeable trait of a DMD patient. The patient s calf s look like they have muscle, but this enlargement of the calves is actually fat. This is referred to as pseudo hypertrophy, and patients with pseudo hypertrophy of the calves usually walk on their toes due to the contracture. Another initial sign of DMD would be waddling gait 1. This form of walking looks like a duck in a sense. It is where the alternating steps are overstated and the hips are elevated more than normal. Usually once atrophy of the hip musculature is noticed, shoulder weakness in noticed also. Those inflicted with DMD will also have trouble with overhead activates, and keeping the shoulders flexed for long periods of time. Scott M. Giles actually lists the following muscles affected by DMD: Shoulder girdle musculature, pectorals, deltoids, rectus abdominals, gluteals, hamstrings, and calf muscles 6. DMD patients continue to lose control and strength in their lower extremity musculature and eventually have so much trouble walking they are confined to a wheelchair. There is not a set age where this occurs, but the average is around twelve years old. The DMD muscles involved in eating, drinking, and of the eye are not touched by the disease. They usually do not have any hearing deficits or stroke disorders 1. There are several additional complications with DMD. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
