QUESTION 5- HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR
AUDINCE?
• My magazine is aimed at university students, studying classical music in the UK. In the research and planning
section of my project, I investigated the conventions of not only magazines but classical music genre. This gave
me an insight into the stereotypical conventions that magazines in today’s market use to attract their audience,
and so I became aware of the things I can include in my magazine to attract my particular target audience. I also
conducted an extensive amount of research in to my particular target audience, as this is extremely necessary
to ensure that I include conventions in my magazine, that will actually attract my target audience and increase
the success of my magazine. I made a questionnaire that I distributed to my target audience, the questions on
my questionnaire were specifically used to give me insight into the interests of my target audience of which I
can use to my advantage to attract them to buy my magazine. After I had collected the results from my
questionnaire, I created pie charts and bar graphs, so I could have a large amount of quantitative visual data,
that enabled me to make generalisations of the interests of my target audience and so include these in my
magazine, to attract my target audience.
• The images I used in my magazine attracted my target audience. Although it can be argued that my images
somewhat subvert the stereotypical image of the classical music genre, of which is normally associated with
mature adults, I justify my choice of images, as conforming to my target audience of whom too challenge the
stereotypical target audience of whom would be interested in classical music, As my target audience is of a
younger age and are students. The age of my model is similar to that of my target audience, which therefore
attracts them because, they feel connected to the model and associate themselves with her. This means that
they feel encouraged to buy the magazine, as they aspire to be like her, as they feel a connection because of
the similar age groups. The mise-en-ce conforms to the stereotypical representation of classical music, as the
costume code presents my model in an elegant, sophisticated dress, lined with crystals which add richness to
the dress. This is associated with the evening dress nature of classical music, as we are aware the lifestyle of
classical musicians includes evening concerts of which formal dress is necessary.
• Therefore my costume code presented conforms as it shows my model wearing an elegant dress, of which
associated with evening concerts and feminine hair and makeup. This connects my target audience to the
magazine, because they would presumably as students studying classical music life a similar lifestyle, and so
feel connected to the costume code shown. This encourages them to buy my magazine, as they feel it be in
their interest to their studies and entertainment. The body language and stance shown by my model also
conforms to the stereotypical image of classical musicians, as she is shown with a good posture, standing up
straight and solum. This conforms to the straight, regimented image of classical music, and so attracts students
of whom are becoming familiar with this lifestyle. However on my double page spread this is slightly challenged
as we see a more relaxed image of my model, in a more relaxed stance, this attracts my unique target audience
as although interested in classical music, they are not as mature and regimented as mature classical musicians
and so appreciate the more relaxed approach taken, which conforms to their lifestyle more, as students are
stereotypically presented as scatty, fun loving and clumsy.
• The name of my magazine attracts my target audience as its technological
nature, attracts an audience of whom have musical knowledge to appreciate
the meanings of the classical terms. Therefore this makes muy7 magazine
inappropriate for a younger audience of whom are not skilled enough to
understand the meaning of these technological terms, It will also attract
students because, they are interested in investing money in a magazine of
which they feel will enrich their musical knowledge and help them gain the
best grades possible at their time in university. Therefore it is of the upmost
importance to include educational technological knowledge and terms.
• The colour scheme is feminine and fun loving-this attracts my unique
youngish target audience as they will be more attracted to the brighter
colours, of which reflect their lifestyle more e.g. parties. Furthermore the
pinks used will mainly attract my female target audience, as stereotypically
gender divisions of colour present pink as being a girls colour, however I also
have used blacks and yellows, of which are more neutral colours, and so
could also attract a male audience, however specifically classical music
students.
• The puffs I have used meet the interest s of my target audience for example I
have offered a price pf 2 tickets to go to the Royal Albert Hall, of which is the
home of opera. This therefore entices my specific target audience of whom
share these interests, as they would be the people to appreciate a prize such
as this. This puff specifically attracts my target audience, as people of whom
are not interested in classical music may struggle to see the importance and
value of a visit to such an outstanding g home of music. Therefore I can
ensure that my puffs are specific to my target audience. For this reason they
will be ‘persuaded’ to buy my product as they will feel of benefit,
furthermore this allows me to raise the price range, as students have limited
money, but by included puffs, they look beyond the price because they feel as
if they are gaining from the product, so especially for my target audience, of
students who need to enrich their experiences to put on their CV before the
workplace, and who thrive off free giveaways, my use of puffs are a perfect
way of enticing them to buy my product!!!
Overall I think I have achieved this, as I have used all the key conventions
necessary to magazines, and further to that I have included specialist
conventions, such as a specific costume code or interest specific puffs that will
attract my particular target audience.
