  3. 3. Prelude to War <ul><li>Mexico freed slaves in 1830, but Americans kept bringing more into Texas </li></ul><ul><li>Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became dictator of Mexico </li></ul><ul><li>Santa Anna jailed Texan representative Stephen Austin on a mission to resolve differences </li></ul>
