  • The War of Texas Independence Brady
  • Populating Texas
    • Spain was original owner of Texas
    • Mexico won its independence in 1824
    • First encouraged, then forbade American immigration into Texas
    • Famous adventurers included Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie
  • Prelude to War
    • Mexico freed slaves in 1830, but Americans kept bringing more into Texas
    • Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became dictator of Mexico
    • Santa Anna jailed Texan representative Stephen Austin on a mission to resolve differences
  • Declaring War
    • Santa Anna abolished the Mexican Constitution and raised an army to enforce power
    • Texans declared independence in 1836
    • Sam Houston declared commander in chief
    • Santa Anna brought 6,000 men into Texas
  • Texan Problems
    • Texans surrounded and besieged, then defeated at the Alamo
    • No prisoners taken
    • Force of some 400 Texans surrounded and captured at Goliad
    • All were executed a week later
  • Texan Victory
    • Used Alamo and Goliad as rallying cries
    • Houston retreated towards US border
    • Mexicans divided to follow Houston
    • At San Jacinto, Houston forced by men to fight, took Santa Anna by surprise
    • Battle lasted 18 minutes
  • Texan Independence
    • Captive Santa Anna was forced to sign two treaties
    • Treaties agreed to withdraw all Mexican troops from Texas, recognize the Rio Grande as extreme southern border of Mexico and Texas
    • Santa Anna later called them invalid because they were signed under duress
  • Part of the U.S.
    • Jackson originally only recognized as independent
    • Texans wanted to be annexed to U.S.
    • Slavery issue kept U.S. from annexing right away
    • Texas annexed in 1845
