A splendid little war!
1.
2. A WAR LIKE FEW OTHERS…
More often than not, countries think they will win
wars right away. Sadly, that is rarely the case.
The Spanish-American War only lasted four
months.
Americans fought both in Cuba and the
Philippines, another island possession of Spain
America completely dominated the Spanish in the
war.
More Americans died from malaria than fighting.
3. 1. The Philippines
2. Guam
3. Puerto Rico
America took over
Cuba also, instead
of letting it
become free.
Specifically we
bought
Guantanamo Bay.

4. America suddenly was
prepared to become an
empire.
Teddy Roosevelt, who
became president after
the war, announced the
corollary to the Monroe
Doctrine: we could be
police in the American
hemisphere
EFFECTS OF THE WAR
5. To symbolize America’s
expanding power,
Roosevelt sent
America’s navy, the
Great White Fleet, on a
global tour (warning to
everyone else).

6. America’s first big
opportunity to live up to
Roosevelt’s aims:
The U.S. encouraged
Panama to revolt from
Columbia. As payment
for supporting them, we
were allowed to build
and operate the Panama
Canal.

7. ABSOLUTE POWER
Increasingly, the U.S. began intervening in
local issues in South and Central
America.
This led to an economic imperialism for
America in the Western Hemisphere.
