The english civil war
1. Charles chose to ban Parliament.
He locked them out of their building for 11 years.
This was called the “11 Years Tyranny.”
2. Charles began taking up
more taxes without
allowing Parliament a say.
One member refused to
pay and was thrown in
jail.
3. He arrested five more
members that he
considered a problem.
Parliament represented
the people and thus the
regular folks got angry.
To be continued…..
4.
5. After our discussion from yesterday, the English Civil
War began in 1642. Charles’s supporters, the Royalists,
and Parliament’s followers began fighting.
What is a civil war?
6. Parliament turned to
Oliver Cromwell to lead
the fight against the king’s
men.
Was a member of
Parliament before this
happened.
Made his own army called
the “New Model Army”
7. Cromwell quickly defeated the Royalist
Army.
The king and his men had to surrender. At
first, it looked like he would begin to follow
Parliament’s demands and allow them a say
in things. But he escaped and started the
war back. Cromwell won again.
8. In 1649, Charles was put on trial. He was found guilty
and beheaded.
9. The success of Cromwell’s war was a serious
blow to the idea of an “absolute monarchy.”
Influenced John Locke’s concept that if a
government did not support the people, the
people should overthrow the government.
10. Oliver Cromwell was put
in charge of England and
became known as the
Lord Protector.
He refused to become a
king.
Charles’s son, Charles II,
wanted to take over but
was not allowed to.
Cromwell outlawed
Christmas!!!
11. When Cromwell died, his son took over.
But his son didn’t have the leadership skills necessary
to lead a country and quit after a few months.
So now what?
