REVIEW
 At the end of World War II, America and the Soviet
Union disagreed over politics (freedom versus
unlimited governments) and economics (capitalism
versus socialism).
 These disagreements created the Cold War – a
heated disagreement between the countries after
World War II.
CONTAINMENT
 After the war, the Soviet Union wanted to spread
communism.
 America wanted to contain (limit or stop) the spread
of communism and instead spread democracy
(voting).
PAY-OFFS
 President Truman was
worried communism
would spread and
eventually take over the
United States.
 Because of this, he
came up with a US
foreign policy where
America gave money to
countries to convince
them not to become
communist.
THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE
 This idea was called the Truman Doctrine.
 It was used as a way to help stave off another
depression in Europe which might lead to European
countries becoming communist like Russia had to
solve their depression.
 $400 million dollars was given to Greece and
Turkey.
THE MARSHALL PLAN
 The Marshall Plan was
(to a degree) an
extension of the Truman
Doctrine. $12.5 billion
dollars was given to
Western Europe to help
rebuild and keep the
entire region from
becoming communist.
GOODBYE LEAGUE OF NATIONS
 Because the League of
Nations failed to stop
World War II from
happening, the League
of Nations was replaced
by the United Nations.
(same concept; new
name)
 The UN’s job is to stop
global conflicts and
prevent wars.
WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE UN?
 It has two major differences from the
League of Nations:
 It has access to a military if it needs to
stop war.
 America became a member right away.
 It actually got involved in the Korean War
and the division of Germany.
