Results of the war (day 2)

  1. 1. Results of the War (Day 2)
  2. 2. Problems with the League of Nations • The major problem with the League of Nations was the it was weak and unstructured (no real organization)
  3. 3. Problem 2! • Many countries did not join, like the United States. • Germany and Russia were not allowed to join. (Both eventually were allowed several years later) Why? • Japan and Italy both dropped out over disagreements. • The League of Nations then had no control over the nations that were not involved.
  4. 4. Problem 3 and 4 • The League had no power to enforce its rules. • It had to rely on moral persuasion (basically it asked people to do what they said and hoped they would). • Had no soldiers if a war broke out. • Every member nation had to agree for any rule to take effect.
  5. 5. Attempts to Fix Things • Wilson had proposed “self- determination.” Basically each group of people could decide to be a country or join an another. Also, countries would chose their leadership. • However, the Allies used this selectively (by choice) – they did not allow “their” empires this freedom.
  6. 6. Goodbye to the Central Powers • We discussed how Germany had to pay for the war and claim responsibility for the entire war. • So what happened to Austria-Hungary (Austria and Hungary) and the Ottoman Empires (Turkey)? They were broken up into smaller kingdoms.
  7. 7. Germany lost its empire. Poland became a country that served as a buffer between Russia and Germany.
  8. 8. An Agitated Russia • Russia lost a lot of land to Germany as a result of their separate treaty (the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk). • The Soviet Union eventually retook most of it.
