Two Speed IT: How Companies Can Surf the Digital Wave, A BCG Perspective Powerpoint Presentation
1.
2. Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Information
Technology (IT) Director, is a job title commonly given to the
most senior executive in an enterprise responsible for the
information technology and computer systems that support
enterprise goals.
3. • The CIO must
transform IT into a
business.
• He should be able to
lead different
departments.
16. • Technology is progressing very fast.
• There are a lot of emerging companies
involving IT, all companies wants to
reduce costs in anyway possible, so
Executives of company searches for
IT companies that can do IT activities
faster in a cheaper price.
Editor's Notes
Computer should not only be the one in his whole universe.
He must be a Business Manager.
He will convince his executives, partners and customers that his solution is the best and make sure that they will be happy with it.
He needs to ensure that there will be smooth running of the solution he just sold.
This requires the implementation of the Strong and Standardize Architecture on which he can built this solution.
He need to measure a lot of values s much as possible.
He should master his Balance Sheet to know what needs to improve and he has to do so, then he can show precisely how much value he has.
He can’t manage the business on his own.
He needs to take care of very different people and lead them to success.
Yet still faced by IT people nowadays.
Some says IT people have their own language, that’s why when they show outputs of their research to board of committee, they don’t understand it, and worst case scenario even if they don’t understand they still agree to implement it, and the effect of it will be a disaster.
Many projects have an IT component, and as much as 50-60% are invested in IT but there are still lapses that causes IT to be late in producing the desirable outputs.
For example: using smartphones, pc, websites, make codes, editing and others. Because of this people now expects more from IT.
This means IT people must talk with executives in a business manner.
Also IT people sometimes are getting a hard time to communicate with Executives because we barely talk in our Profession.
This last challenge is from external.
So IT companies will be somewhat forced to reduce the prices of their services in order to keep their customers happy.
R&D: When there in new technology you can develop new products, with R&D we will be aware of when or what new things are coming-in.
Development: Once you are fond of technology and knows your platform, then you will develop the application or product, build projects and others.
Production: Then put them in production, for example: if it will run in mainframe, servers, pc or other device.
Marketing: Start to sell them and market them, of course if you have a good marketing, then the clients or customers will expect more from your application or product.
Sales: Then you will still have to do some convincing, so you should be smart on how to sell your application or product to the client or customer.
After Sales: When the application or product is out on the field, you have to support the people because they might encounter issues or problems with your application or product. (As you can see in the cartoon, After Sales is critical, that’s why there is a big monster who wants to escape, because when the application or product is on the field, that’s when you see the bigger picture, you will see thigns that you didn’t think about before that can have a great impact on the application or product).
In this cartoon the Executive wants his/her CIO as director of IT purchases, making sure he knows the unit costs and making sure he called the right IT suppliers and others.
Now in this cartoon the executive wants his/her CIO to be a businessman, who understands business and contribute to the companies strategy, and one who knows the technical part of IT and the business part of IT.
Manage: In managing the IT department these are the key points:
Cooperate: The CIO should deal with 3 people: his boss, the corporate management, his colleagues and staffs. Its about incorporating the vision, the strategy of the company with your managing skills.
Transform: When you already incorporated you managerial skills with the Business Lines then you will transform your knowledge and skills in a ways that will help the company and innovate it more.
Deal: Deal with internal staff to have a good environment for work, deal with outsourcing to reduce costs of resources needed because sometimes the resources found in your local vicinity are more expensive than in foreign places, deal with offshoring again to lower costs of the company by basing some of the companies services or product lines in other countries that has lower prices for processes, rent and other factors.
Communicate: The CIO should give feasibility of where he’s heading, where he needs to invest, how is he going to decrease the cost, where he can create value and others.
1. Have a clear view and feasibility of what you want to do in order to have a desirable output.
2. Manage the costs in a way that you can be flexible in the dynamic change of costs.
3. Measure what you can do, because if you measure it then you can do it successfully and you might even know if you exceeded your goals in a way that can contribute to the company.
4. Because the CIO will not manage all employees, the CIO needs to leverage it to manage the processes, deliveries, service and others.
The CIO should manage both the assets and liabilities or debt.
The CIO needs to design the right products that he needs to sell.
The CIO should manage the product at the right price in the right infrastructure.
The CIO should manage the people internally and externally.
The CIO must know how to transform IT department into a business for it not to disappear.
1. Building IT application that will support or go with the business goals.
2. Building IT application that will go with the whole company and customer section, and you must make sure that people are happy with your system.
3. Building IT application with you having knowledge where the budget is going or being used upon.
Strategic Plan includes:
1. Because everyone needs to know what is happening on the application or system, everyone from the factory workers to the Executives must know the progress of the system in order to know what next steps should be done.
2. Profit and Loss view, in order for the company to know the company’s revenue and expenses.
3. To know the Assets and Liabilities of the comoany.
The CIO must be able to know what parts of the application or system needs a lot of budget and which parts needs only a little amount of project.
For example the CIO may shift budgets from the least important to the most important, like when there is a need to finish a big part quickly, then the CIO should spend more on resources to finish the big part on time.
Managing Uncertainty is complex because of the following:
Actors Involved – There are many actors involved in here, inside and outside of IT, and sometimes you can’t control everyone or lead everyone which causes lack of unity at work.
Various Topics – This may include Business topics, Technical topics and others. Sometimes people doesn’t know what they want so its another problem.
IT Budget – with this problems your IT Budget will have uncertainties.

IT Performance is Create at maximum Value at a minimum Costs
1. The more time we make people to think about what is the project, the more it will be complex.
2. Or less to have time to polish it and fixed errors.
3. So you will have time to finish the project little by little.
4. Too have something too look at the future time.
5. We should know what functionalities are really essential to the project and what functionalities are not important but maybe nice to have.
6. To help you know what to improve on.
60% of IT cost involves the Infrastructure that’s why the CIO should know how to manage it.
No needed explanation.
It like survival of the fittest, because the world is changing very fast and technology is almost at its peak, then IT should be able to cope up with this changes in order to further innovate.
IT needs to adapt in order to survive.
1. Instead of just holding the drinks, why not put it on a tray or plate.
2. Help someone get to their job on time, so they can work on time and be productive.
3. Instead of sitting on the Laptop and playing with the chair, why not use the chair to sit on and be productive in your laptop.
Changing is a must to further improve and innovate.
For example you are given a 3 years project, and you said to your co-workers that you can finish 50% of it in just 1 year, then it may be too ambitious.
In the cartoon for example because the CIO is too confident or too ambitious he was controlled and dragged by the boat, so that’s bad.
Now you said to your co-workers that you can only finish 10% in 1 year, then it’s a low percentage, it means that you don’t trust yourself and co-workers.
In the cartoon, because the CIO is not confident that he an ride the waters, he started to sink and can’t do anything about it, and this is even worst.
Now you said to your co-workers that you can finish 30% in 1 year, it will be just balanced because you know you can do it but also you know the challenges you might face.
In the cartoon the CIO is happy riding the water because he knows he can do it.
Preparation – this is where planning will now enter again, this is where you make a lot of plans, from A to Z in order to know what is the most appropriate approach.
Implementation – Once you have chosen then you will Implement it, as you can see in the cartoon it is a bug jump, because if you implemented it and you forgot something or change something then you will start all over again. So the risk here is the biggest.
Perseverance – If you persevere in continuing the plan that is implemented, then you may have the chance to be successful or finishing it.
Transformation – Now this is the goal that you want to reach right from the start, but here the fight is not over, because…
In the Transformation the CIO should still manage it:
Diagnosis – This is where you ask yourself where is your project now and where do you want it to go.
Design a Road Map – When you are already decided then you will design your path or things you will do in order to meet the demands of the project.
Implementation – If you are done with your design then you will implement. While implementing this are the key parts.
1. Implementation will be again tricky that’s why you need to be transparent with the whole team in a way that if there’s a problem you will support them and you will try to fix it.
2. Having this review will give you the right amount of information about the project, if its working or not, if its progressing or not and others.
3. Having this review is important because you will have to talk with your Executives, Superiors and others about the project, if it will be a success or not, if its on the right track or not, if there are more budget needed and others.
4. Now you will look again in the Diagnosis to check if the project is going on the right track as planned at the start.
