This document analyzes the layout and design elements of two double page spreads from a music magazine. [1] The first spread follows a typical layout with the picture on the right and text on the left to guide the reader's eye flow. Elements like captions, leading text, and sidebars are used effectively. [2] The second spread has an atypical layout with the large central picture spanning both pages. This draws more attention to the picture over the text. Sidebars again separate and highlight important sections. [3] Key aspects that inspire the document author include the large central pictures, use of sidebars, and articles that give artists a platform beyond just interviews. 3. The double page spread follows the natural eye flow. The layout is typical of a double page spread, as the
picture is on the right and the text is on the left. The text is generally to most important thing and
therefore the readers eyes are naturally drawn to that first. The picture is also important as it depicts the
musician, the readers then see this and in the future they can associate the musicians face with her
name, which is what the eye flow go near to next. The eye flow then seems to go back to near the text.
This also shows the importance of the text on the page compared to the picture. Although, the eye flow
does seems to mostly be on the picture of the musician, this could be mainly for the audience to associate
the face with a name.

4. I like the style of this picture. I like the lighting from the
sign but I also like the lighting of the whole picture.
Generally this seems to be a bit more posed than a
front cover, however, her posing does seem more
relaxed and natural. Also, with the picture there are lots
of things in the background which is very different from
a conventional front cover. Also, there is no need to
leave space for text, so there is more focus on the artist
and surroundings rather than other text on the page.
The musician has direct eye contact to the
camera, similar to a typical music magazine.
I particularly like the content of the feature. I
like the layout because it can let you know a
little bit more about the artist and it shows that
they are independent and they can take
control. also, it gets their opinions rather than
showing everything about them. The content of
the feature inspires me and I might base my
double page spread of this type of article.

5. This ‘sidebar’ separates some of the text and highlights the
importance of this section of text from the rest of the feature. The
pink makes this section particularly stand out. The pink also
matches that of the main title of the musicians name and the
button. The small picture draws in audience in because they may
want to know who she is talking about and her opinion of the
person. I like this sidebar because it separates the text and makes it
look more appealing to the audience because its not just one page
full of text alone.
This button is situated at the top right corner. It stands out
due to its bright colours and big text. This issue is a special
edition and it has a running theme through it. each feature is
introducing a modern and recent musician. This button shows
the reader what the theme is and it can distinguish what is
part of the special feature and what is normally part of the
magazine. I will use this button in my double page spread but
I will not make a ‘special’ feature.

7. This layout is different to a conventional music magazine double page spread layout, therefore, the eye flow is very
different to the other double page spread. The main focus of these pages is the main picture, its size contributes to
this. The picture takes over more than half the page, whereas typically, the main picture would stop halfway
through the page. The eye flow is also drawn to most of the picture, because there are two people the focus needs
to be the same for both the musicians, if the picture was on the right hand side then the eye flow would be drawn
to one artist more than the other because of the direction of the eye flow. This layout means the eye flow foes to
both artists, equally. However, the text isn't noticed too much due to the layout. Also, the direction of the eye flow
goes through the sidebar unlike with the other double page spread, this brings more attention to the sidebar.

8. I like this picture because of the layout of the
models, the expressions on their faces show
their seriousness to music and their black
clothing makes the audience focus on their
faces and stances rather than what they are
wearing. Their poses and postures shows that
they are two very different individuals as they
are standing very differently. I like the scenic
background as its very colourful in contrast to
their dark, black clothes. The text in front
really stands out because of its bright colours,
although, the two musicians stand out
because of their black clothes contrasting
with the green and bright background. The
background isn't too busy, which draws the
attention to the artists, however, I feel the
twig in the background should have been
removed because I feel it ruins the
background as it stands out too much
because there is nothing else of that nature
on the floor or surrounding them.

9. This is very similar to the other sidebar on the first double page
spread. again, this separates the text and makes it more
appealing to the reader as it isn't just one lengthy block of text.
The picture draws the audience in as it will make them want to
know about content concerning the person in the picture. The
pink stands out from the rest of the text and it matches the
main title. The colour pink seems to be a running theme in the
issue magazine and this brings everything together.
This leading text section is on the picture rather
than by the text. This could be due to the fact that
the picture takes up more than half of the two
pages. I like this as it doesn’t take up too much
space by the text and it uses up any unneeded
space on the picture.

10. What inspires me.
I like the pictures of both the double page spreads. I really like the picture of the musicians from 2:54
because of the background and I may take my picture outside. I like its layout, the fact that the picture is on
the right and the text is on the left goes against conventions and it makes it stand out from the other double
page spreads. I like the type of article for ‘Azealia Banks’ because its not just and interview and the artists
get to have their say on what they want. I think I may use this as inspiration when I start to make my double
page spread. From both of the articles, I really like the sidebar and I will use this in my double page spread.
Although, I will make it different from the article and possibly make it about some other information about
the artist.
