Statutory Requirements
• §115C-12(21): monitor and compile an annual report on acts of
violence in the public schools
• §115C-12(27): report by March 15 of each year to the Joint
Legislative Education Oversight Committee on the numbers of
students who have dropped out of school, been subjected to
corporal punishment, been suspended, been expelled, been
reassigned for disciplinary purposes, or been placed in an
alternative program
SBE Strategic Priorities
• Goal 1 – Eliminate opportunity gaps by 2025
• Objective 2 – Decrease the number of exclusionary discipline
practices by subgroup
• Objective 4 – Decrease the high school dropout rate for each
subgroup

4. Added the number of students who also given an out-of-school suspension along
with ALPS placement, the number of days they were out of school before
placements, and the total number of days out of school for subgroups, where
appropriate.

Short-Term Suspensions for Unacceptable Behaviors
• Of the 152,873 short-term suspensions in 2019-2020, 146,657
(96.0%) were given as a result of an incident involving
unacceptable behaviors (non-reportable acts).
• The rate of short-term suspension for unacceptable behaviors
was 96.1 per 1000 students across the state.

Statutory Requirements • §115C-12(21): monitor and compile an annual report on acts of violence in the public schools • §115C-12(27): report by March 15 of each year to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee on the numbers of students who have dropped out of school, been subjected to corporal punishment, been suspended, been expelled, been reassigned for disciplinary purposes, or been placed in an alternative program

New figure showing five-year trend in state level long-term suspensions 4. New data on long-term removals from home school as a result of long-term suspensions or ALPS placement in lieu of long-term suspension
