The Republic of Moldova lies in the central part of Europe in the northwestern Balkans. Moldova occupies an area of 33,843.5 km2. The total length of the national boundaries is 1,389 km, including 939 km with Ukraine and 450 km with Romania. The most northerly point is the village of Naslavcea (48º21´ N 27º35´ E), while the most southerly point, Giurgiulesti (45º 28´ N 28º 12´ E), which is the only settlement on the bank of the Danube. The most westerly point is the village of Criva (48º16´ N 26º30´ E) and the most easterly point is the village of Palanca (46º 25´ N 30º 05´ E).
I n June 1990 Moldova proclaimed its sovereignty, and on August 27, 1991 – its State Independence. In March 2, 1992, the Republic of Moldova became a member of the United Nations.
The population of Moldova in 2003 was estimated by the United Nations at 4,267,000, which placed it as number 116 in population among the 193 nations of the world. In that year approximately 9% of the population was over 65 years of age, with another 24% of the population under 15 years of age. There were 92 males for every 100 females in the country in 2003. According to the UN, the annual population growth rate for 2000–2005 is -0.11%, with the projected population for the year 2015 at 4,206,000. The population density in 2002 was 126 per sq km (327 per sq mi).
The culture of the Republic of Moldova represents a large gamut of cultural activities: literature, theatre, music, fine arts, architecture, cinematography, broadcasting and television, photographic art, design, circus, folk art, archives and libraries, books editing, scientific research, cultural tourism and so on.

is the capital city and industrial and commercial centre of Moldova . It is also the largest city of Moldova and is located in the centre of the country, on the river Bîc . Economically, the city is the most prosperous in Moldova and is one of the main industrial centres and transportation hubs of the region. As the most important city in Moldova, Chişinău has a broad range of educational facilities. Additionally, the city has among the highest proportion of green spaces of any major city in Europe .
Amongst the most valuable achievements of the Moldovan diplomacy in the area of European Integration are the deepening of the bilateral dialogue with the EU within the European Neighbourhood Policy; the signing of the European Union – Republic of Moldova Action Plan in Brussels on 22 February 2005; the establishment of the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Community (in May 2005); the creation of the Office of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Moldova (in October 2005); the appointment of a Special EU Representative to the Republic of Moldova and the enlargement of the (“five plus two side”) format for carrying out of negotiations for the settlement of the conflict in Transnistria with the inclusion of the EU and the USA; the obtaining of facilities for the GSP+ system for the export of Moldovan products to the EU market; the continuation of the dialogue with the European Commission for obtaining the EU Autonomous Trade Preferences according to a similar offering model for Western Balkans states etc.

The history of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova began on August 22, 1832 – the date of the establishment of the Country Public Library. From the beginning only 477 books and 73 magazines constituted the library colection. Our days the NLRM is the main state institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova

Publishing of the collections
The creation and updating of the collections is one of primary goals in the activity of the National Library. Annually the Library acquires up to 13-15 thousand of various documents.
Since 1950 the Library receives the legal deposit of all documents issued in Moldova including books, periodicals, multimedia documents, etc.
A total of 2,5 million of documents in 30 languages represent a multimedia collection, including: manuscripts, printed materials, audio-visual documents, graphic documents, microformats, electronic documents.
The collection of manuscripts includes 140 units, 30 out of them are facsimile editions. We point out the manuscript "Evangheliarul slavo-grecesc ", a known monument of the Romanian culture and art, copied in the monastery Neamt in 1429 by the monk Gavriil Uric (the original is kept in the Library of Oxford). Other manuscripts are: " De neamul moldovenilor din ce tara au ieşit stramoşii lor", written in 1680-1691 in Romanian language by Miron Costin (microfilm), copies of manuscripts "Aritmologhion" (1672), "Hrismologhion" (1673) and "Vasiliologhion" (1673), belonging to Nikolae Milesku-Spetaru, "Pateric", written in Kishinev Sacred Metropole by monk Manasie in 1816 (original
The information on new acquisitions is included in the electronic catalogue since 1991. Now the on-line catalogue contains about 245 thousand registrations.On-line access is carried out from the computers established in the reading room, and also in the specialised services.
The central database comprises other databases: “Culture in Moldova”, “Exteriorica”.
Since 1997 the Library is connected to the Internet.
The most important norms for the National Library are user’s requirements, according to which the objectives and the offered services are permanently changed in order to satisfy the expectations of users.
Annually the Library offers services to more than 13000 users. Within one year about 165 thousand persons visit the National Library. About 600 thousand documents are offered to them.
The fund of the Library can be used in reading rooms, by means of interlibrary loan, and also by the personal subscription.
The National Library issues up to 20 titles of publications annually. Their information value involves plenty of organisations, and also separate persons. Achievements in this area are: “The Book of Moldova: the Summary Catalogue”, “National Bibliography: Exteriorica”, “National Bibliography: Official publications”,
“ National Bibliography: Doctoris thesis”, “Culture in Moldova”, “The Chronicle of Political, Administrative, Social; Economic and Cultural Life of Moldova”, “The National Calendar”, biobibliographies etc.
The National Library in the Network of Libraries
The National Library carries out the following functions:
Maintenance of a uniform methodological approach in Moldavian librarianship
Organizational and documentary maintenance of the continuing professional education of librarians in the Republic of Moldova
Standardization in the field of library and information science
State library statistics
Rendering of the methodological assistance, the elaboration of professional publications (The Librarianship of Moldova: Frame of Regulation, Bibliologic Bulletin, Public Libraries: the Statistics, Magazin Bibliologic, Librarian’s Newspaper, etc.)
Annually the National Library organizes the Symposium Anul bibliologic (The Library Year) and the National Seminar for library managers.
The Staff of the Library
In the Library work 285 employees, 206 out of them are library specialists. The nucleus of collective makes the personnel with more than 15 years of work experience.
