1. Pen-Based Tablet Technology to Enhance the Teaching/Learning Environment ISTE2011 – Unlocking the Potential Carol Carruthers June 26, 2011
2. Presentation Outline Foundational mathematics – teaching collaborative Technology integration teaching/learning Pen based tablet technology Asynchronous communication Pen based tablet PC/DyKnow workspace Two-way synchronous communication
3. Foundational Mathematics/ Teaching Collaborative How was it developed? Who takes it? Teaching collaborative Technology integration: HP tablet PC’s, e-textbook, LO’s, Web Quests Student-centered community learning
4. Why Pen-Based Tablet Technology? Keyboard restrictions for math/science formulation Student familiarity with pencil and paper Easily corrected, annotated, enhanced Diagrams, concept maps, flow charts…
5. Asynchronous communication: E-notes posted to LMS Teacher with pen-based tablet PC writes into Microsoft Journal and projects on front screen to students Students download e-notes from LMS: Options: 1) Write on paper - collect in a binder 2) Personal tablet - write into Microsoft Journal 3) Personal laptop/Wacom bamboo tablet -write into Word 2007 (review – start inking)
6. Relevant Subject Materials: The use of interactive learning objects – http://www.mathopenref.com/ Teacher demonstrations – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvKu2T9Kovo
7. Web Quests: What is a Web Quest?http://www.webquest.org/index.phphttp://www.yesnet.yk.ca/schools/wes/webquests.html CLEA login:http://open.senecac.on.ca/clea/login.php
8. 9. Technology for Teaching/Learning Pen-Based Tablet PC Technology: A 2008 Hi-Ed HP Technology for Teaching Grant - 21 PC Fall 2010 additional 40 PC lab – multifunctional room/lab (Math/Science/English) Jan 2011 second campus - 25 PC lab Collaborative Workspace – DyKnow Vision: Initial purchase, Grant, video contest winner A 2011 Seneca Innovation Grant Recipient Additional funding by FASET and ACS
11. Synchronous Communication: Innovation in Teaching Methodology Interactive focus activity Concept development Collaborative practice Application Reflection of learning
12.
13. Collaborative Practice Class moves at a self-directed pace Increased discussion/participation Anonymous response Online groups, share control, submit panels Students share screens, become the temporary teacher, model methodology Collaborative e-notes saved in a virtual binder available 24/365

19. Technological Hurdles Tablet PCs Consistent wireless internet connection Time constraints/benefits Stylus vs. pen and virtual binder vs. paper “…they (tablets) could be a very distracting because it (takes) your mind away off lectures…when lectures becomes boring I tend to go on websites which is the worst thing I can do …”
20. Student Response “…I actually did my work and it was done right and organized which helped for studying.” “…I tend to pay attention more thus doing better in work and tests” “…students can share answers anonymously, we can correct each other’s work.” “I found that the shy students were more comfortable participating through the tablet and shared control in dyknow than standing up and speaking”.
