2. CAMERA
The camera remains constant
throughout the opening, the only shot
used in the opening title sequence is an
birds eye view shot of a over head
projector screen.
This allows the audience to fully see
what’s going on in the clips/photos
that are being shown so they’re not
distracted from fast cuts or different
shots. So they can focus on the images,
which most are disturbing therefore
setting the mood for the rest of the
film.
3. EDITING
Superimposition is used throughout the opening of
‘The Conjuring’, an especially affective use of
superimposition is when the doll ‘Annabelle’ appears
suddenly on screen close up, intending to make the
audience jump as it’s a sudden placement of the
creepy doll photo.
Fading transition between different clips is also used,
I especially noticed the use of this when images of the
family was shown as if signifying their death or at least
the capture of their soul/body by the spirits. This
again, allows to set the mood for the audience for the
rest of the film.
The lighting used is also dark and dim, setting the
dull tone for the movie.
Positioning of titling is strategically placed and kept
simple, with a white background and capitalised black
text. For example, the image on the right you can see
the titles are placed over the children's faces, again
4. SOUND
Throughout the opening sequence there’s a constant
monotonal droning sound, setting the dark mood for the film.
To accompany this, there’s the odd trombone(?) sound that
flows along side the droning sound.
There’s often higher pitched sounds in between the constant
droning to create a significant difference and the audience
uncomfortable.
When the pages flip on the over head projector, the sound is
emphasised emerging the audience into the clips.
5. MISE-EN-SCENE
The setting used is a large creepy old house
surrounded by bushes and trees, which sets
the scene for the rest of the film.
The costume of the family in the
photographs suggests that this isn’t set in
present day, as the clothing is quite old
fashioned.
The newspapers have selective headlines,
such as “ghost-hunter gives second lecture
here” and “ritualistic sacrifices plague small
town.” This allows background information
for the audience, but also may make the
audience feel uncomfortable as the headlines
are frightening but allow a sense of realism
because it’s in the newspaper adding
