2. Our short film genre: drama
The most common camera shots in dramas are establishing and
master shots, close ups, mid and long shots. Over the shoulder
shots, two shot, wide shot and point of view are also used
regularly. These shots can be seen in
Mid shot Two shot
Close up Wide shot
Long shot Point of view shot

3. After watching several films with the same genre and feel as
we want to achieve, for example Submarine and Juno, specific
shots and angles used thought the films stuck in my head.
A main example of this is in submarine where his family are
eating dinner together. The audience is positioned in the
corridor, giving them voyeuristic pleasure. It is also a well
composted mid shot as there is two people(the mum and dad)on
either side of the table and one on the end. The makes him the
centre of our attention, showing he is the main character. The
shot would have been less effective if one of the characters
were on the seat closed to the viewer, as it would have cut us
off from the scene. There also seems to be a lot of tension in
this frame, as the parents are very still and unresponsive to
each other. And Oliver seems un aware of his surroundings.
This, to me, is largely down to the choice of dress as Mr and
Mrs Tate are both in very plate cloths, almost blending in to
the wall paper of the dining room. Whereas Oliver is standing
out because of his dark jumper, and bright blue hat. I would
really like to create a similar seen in our short film, as we
have a family dynamic close to the one in Submarine.
4. This is an establishing shot from Juno. It is a standard shot
that is used in pretty much every form of film and TV, but
this shot was memorable for me because the composition of the
houses, the colours and the fact that she is in it. However
she is really small compared to her surroundings, which makes
this shot more intriguing. There is also a really nice cross
cut that is subtle but takes the viewer from a faraway point
to up close to the character. We see her lifting her beverage
in the establishing shot-then wiping away the remanence around
her mouth in the close up. Although simple it is well thought
out that as it is the opening shot, its morning, making the
opening easier for the audience follow along with the story.
It is very well linked with the films overall colour palette
as the sky, reflection in the windows and grass are all
orange/have an orangey tint. It is a reoccurring colour as the
film is set in autumn (we can tell this because the browning
leaves and Halloween decorations in the shop) Orange is also
used a lot in the costumes of Paulie and can be seen on the
all of the American/British posters especially. The colour
orange is associated with joy and sunshine. Orange connotes
enthusiasm, captivation, happiness and creativity.
5. This is a good example of from Sing Street of a two shot mixed
with an over the shoulder shot. The focus starts with the two
male characters, as they are talking. But the focus switched
to the background female character. This shows not only though
dialogue that they are talking about her, but also though a
simple adjustment in focus. It is summarily composed to the
shot in Submarine, using the astatically pleasing numbers
3,5,7.
