2. Most post apocalyptic films use limited lighting in their
films. They do this too give the audience the feel of
loneliness and use the darkened lighting to
compliment the characters’ emotions at the time, sad
and alone.
The road (2009) is a typical example of how
directors use low lighting to establish sadness in the
film. Here the characters are alone and sad, and the
lighting helps the audience to feel what the
characters are feeling
3. I Am Legend (2007)
I am Legend varies from most other Post Apocalyptic
film openings because lighting is bright in an
abandoned city. The film does this by way of surprising
viewers into the extent of what will happen.
4. Children of men (2006)
Children of men uses a lighting that is neither light or
dark in the opening scene. The film does this to give
the audience that there is a sense of normality so they
can surprise the audience the the explosion happens
and the scene cuts to black.
5. Wall – E (2008)
Wall – E is anomaly in the post apocalyptic genre as it
is aimed at children and doesn’t use any mild threat or
sadness. However, the opening scenes of wall – e
cleaning up an empty abandoned earth uses lighting to
emphasise how empty the rrmasins of earth are and to
show that wall – e is currently on his own as he clears
up.
6. The Book of Eli (2010)
The book of Eli can perhaps be considered a
stereotype for post apocalyptic lighting. The scene is
under almost complete darkness to show that the
earth has been hit by an apocalypse. The tint of green
also gives a sense of mystery that the audience will
feel
7. conclusion
In conclusion, Post apocalyptic films do use different
styles of lighting, but most common across the genre
is the use of darkness in scenes as it compliments the
distance shots often used to create and a feeling of
loneliness characters feel after the disaster. Films will
sometimes use darker lighting also to create a feeling
of mystery to make the audience guess what will
happen next
