SKILLS
Leadership skills:
Senior Mechanical Engineer, Aquamarine Power: I am the technical lead of a project to redesign,
rebuild and reinstall a power take-off system for our wave energy converter. I am responsible for
all the technical aspects of the project, setting priorities and work schedules for team members.
This requires solid engineering knowledge, long term planning, budget and resource awareness,
technical savvy, and a systematic approach to decision making.
Project team leader, Rolls Royce: I was the leader of a diverse team responsible for designing,
building, commissioning and testing a new type of turbine tip clearance control system. This role
was particularly challenging due to the fact that the team was spread across different sites
hundreds of miles away from each other.
Lieutenant, Royal Navy: I was second in command of a marine engineering department containing
70 people. It was my responsibility to lead by example, during routine cruising and whilst
conducting violent operations. This required critical thinking, high integrity and good planning,
whilst motivating and working with personal who were under enormous stress, frequently
exhausted, occasionally frightened and always missing home.
Personal skills:
Excellent communication skills: As an example, managing an engine room fire on HMS KENT by
way of a radio system, conveying complex technical information in short, clear sentences whilst
providing Command with the ability to Fight, Float and Move the ship. I have also been responsible
for writing technical manuals and procedures in all my previous roles.
Team work: Throughout my time at Aquamarine, Rolls Royce, the Navy, and numerous sporting
teams I have learned to work as part of a team, often whilst surviving in close proximity to one
another in tense environments.

Interpersonal skills: Due to the small size of Aquamarine Power and my relative experience, I am
frequently called upon to provide development and mentoring advice on a wide range of subjects,
including the ImechE scheme. More formally, as a divisional officer in the Navy I was directly
responsible for the welfare, development and education of those in my department. This required
great sensitivity as well as the ability to offer practical advice and moral support.
Technical skills:
9 years experience: This has included the design and operation of large wave energy converters
(Approximately 1000 tonne machines) and Jet engine and nuclear pressure vessel components. In
addition I have managed, operated, maintained, diagnosed and repaired a range of heavy plant
including; gas turbines, large diesel generators, hydraulic systems, HVAC systems, food
manufacture and packaging equipment, and an entire hotel.
Innovation: As an example, on HMS KENT I monitored fuel consumption figures and derived an
algorithm for calculating the ideal engine configuration for a given voyage, resulting in a fuel saving
of 70m3
over a 5 day trip.
Analytical and research skills: At Aquamarine, as well as my previous positions at Rolls Royce and
Kerry Foods, I have conducted extensive research and development. This has involved numerical
simulation using MATLAB, solid modelling using SOLIDWORKS, data analysis using Excel and project
costing including direct contact and negotiation with suppliers.
Design and construction: In addition to the above, I have designed and built Solar water heaters,
food manufacturing machines, as well as emergency repairs to marine equipment, a Go-Kart,
sailing dingy, recumbent bicycle, electric bicycle and working model traction engine. I have gained
ability with and deep understanding of practical skills such as welding, turning, milling and CNC.
PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT
Senior Mechanical Engineer, Aquamarine Power, Edinburgh, March 2014 to present. I have been
involved in a wide range of work, including end-to-end design of a range of components and
systems aimed at improving the Oyster 800 wave energy converter, improvements to Health and
Safety and operating procedures, and analysis of performance. Most recently I have been
responsible as technical lead for a power take off renewal.
Integrated Project Team Lead, Rolls Royce, Derby, July 2011 to March 2014. Project lead of a
diverse team responsible for designing, building, commissioning and testing a new tip clearance
control system. I have also been involved in designing, managing and prototyping the Reactor
Pressure Vessel for the next generation submarine nuclear power plant project.
Mechanical Engineer, Kerry Foods, Ossett, October 2010 to July 2011. Responsibilities included
managing the availability and reliability of over £3 million worth of food production, handling and
packaging equipment, as well as designing and implementing improvements, replacements and
efficiency saving measures in a highly competitive sector.
Lieutenant (Marine Engineering Specialisation) Royal Navy November 2005 – November 2009.
Second in command of the marine engineering department. Responsibilities included
management, availability, condition reporting and fluid consumption of millions of pounds worth of
plant, as well as the wellbeing, performance and education of those in my department.
Diverse range of part time employment including debt recovery and sewing machine repair.
