An Orkney lad, I served for 23 years in the Royal Navy as a Petty Officer marine engineer mechanic and over
4 years with the R.N.L.I. as mechanic on the Stromness lifeboat. I worked on various ships and shore establishments,
with the last 3 being the Stromness lifeboat, Mine hunter HMS Penzance and Clyde Naval Base HMS Neptune.
Career History
Dec 2011 – Currently Stromness Lifeboat mechanic with the R.N.L.I, making sure all maintenance is done and the
boat is ready for sea 24/7.
Aug 2011 – Nov 2011 Mechanical fitter, working in the repair section at Clyde Naval base carrying out
HMS Neptune maintenance on ships engines, generators, pumps and hydraulics.
May 2010 – Jul 2011 Marine engineer Officer of the Watch and naval stores- keeping officer; responsible for all
HMS Penzance outside machinery such as pumps, sewage treatment plants, compressed air, ventilation and
general shipwright work. Organise and instruct training to deal with emergencies such as fire
fighting and floods. Assisting the marine engineer officer to ensure the department runs at
the highest standards.
Jan 2009 - Apr 2010 Marine stores Petty Officer - responsible for maintaining engineer spares at the correct level
HMS Neptune and correctly demanding all stores for the ship lift (nuclear submarine dry dock facility).
Aug 2008 - Nov 2008 Inverness careers office, recruiting.
Jan 2008 - Jun 2008 Career break following serious road accident. Full rehabilitation complete.
Nov 2004 - Dec 2007 Marine engineer Officer of the Watch and naval stores keeping officer; in charge of all
HMS Blyth outside machinery such as pumps, sewage treatment plants, compressed air, ventilation and
all shipwright work. Lifting equipment examiner ensuring all lifting equipment on board
the ship is examined and kept in date for test. Organize and instruct training to deal with
emergencies such as fire fighting and floods.
Feb 2004 - Nov 2004 Mechanical fitter, working in the afloat repair section conducting maintenance on ship
HMS Neptune engines, generators, pumps and hydraulics.
Apr 1989 – Feb 2004 Served as a marine engineer mechanic on HM ships Orkney, Alderney, Guernsey,
Lindisfarne, Blyth and the shore bases HMS Neptune, Cochrane & Nelson and HMS Sultan.
May 1988 - Mar 1989 Left school and joined the Royal Navy, undertook training at HMS Raleigh and HMS Sultan.
