Font- Serif and sans serif font, most likely to fit in
with the type of magazine it is (school) to interest
the students and to make it fairly professional.
Also it is fairly masculine colours (stereotypically
of course) most likely due to the fact it is an all
boys school. Masthead - red bold writing with
unique font compared to others on the cover,
effectively emphasising it making it eye-catching.
Layout- The masthead is really large and bold
taking up quarter of the cover. Different features
that are inside the magazine are listed at the
bottom very close together, however still very
ordered. School logo is in the bottom left corner.
Image does not quite take up the whole cover.
Image- Main and only image shows a focused
student with unfocused teachers in the
background, implying the student is the most
significant. Image is mid-shot. The costumes
effectively project clearly what roles the people in
the image have, (science teacher is clear as she is
wearing a lab coat and the young male is wearing
uniform, therefore a student ). The telescope
relates to the cover story making it important. The
image essentially makes the text clearer.
•
Colour- Bold colours are used making it easy to
read and look good to the eye.
Mode of address- Mixture of formal and
informal probably due to the fact that this
particular magazine may be for parents as well.
The masthead word “Parent” is presented with
an informal font which justifies my previous
statement. Informality is created through
words such as ‘kids’ and the serif font.
Formality is presented through words like
‘potential’, the sans serif font and the tidy
layout.
Conventions- the masthead is conventional as
it is the biggest text on the cover followed by
the cover story. This occurs in most magazines.

to match the target

also bold to stand out,
serif is more creative

so would fit nicely for
the masthead,

better suited to sans

Evaluation
Font- Serif and sans serif acting as a attraction
for target audience (students) and clarity.
Layout- The layout is based around the image
alike the colours of text, to make the most
significant parts of the image be seen and
stand out. Masthead is in good place to be
seen along with the cover story.
Image- Mid-shot of a student doing an art
piece, relating to the cover story.
Colour- The colours were best suited to stand
out and not blend in with the image. Mainly
white and grey font used with the exception
of orange to intensify and project a prize to be
won. The colours used also will appeal to both
genders and therefore hits target audience.
Mode of address- It is a mixture of formal and
informal mainly formal for educational
purposes.
Conventions- The masthead is conventional at
the top middle. Along with coverlines which
conventionally has more than one.
Compare
Both use sans serif for other text, this technique works very well as it is very clear and
easily read. However, dissimilarly I used serif for masthead and sans serif for the other text
to make the masthead stand out and clear plus it fits the target audience.
Similarly the layout is based around the most significant part of the image and text in front
of unimportant background. The colours are suited to the image, causing the text to be
clear and enjoyable to read. The coverlines are fairly ordered and neat for both. Also, the
location of the masthead is a good place as it is the first thing read and stands out.
The real school magazine image is long shot, whereas mine is mid-shot. In addition both
are of a student which relates to the cover story, effectively making the text clearer. It also
brightens up the cover making it more entertaining and readable. In the real school covers
image the student looks keen to learn with her hands tightly wrapped around a book and a
bag oh her shoulder, implying she is organised, most likely this image is to attempt to
influence the other students to be so keen. My image on the other hand relates to the
cover story and is of someone hard working, both effectively can influence others.
Costume-wise both are smartly dressed again a good influence on others.
Correspondingly, the colours used are bright, bold and easily readable. Good colour
choices making the most significant information noticed.
Both are fairly informal with formal parts.
In addition, the masthead are conventionally in the right place as are the images. The
images themselves are conventional for the perfect student…hardworking, well equipt,
excited and so on.
